I can't wear headbands, barrettes, combs, etc. Most of these devices slide right out of my hair.  Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm beggining to learn how to use hair sticks and ordered a pair off this site.  Where I work I'm moving around a lot, bending over etc. For those of you experienced with hair sticks do your updos stay secure for a whole day with lots of movement?

I need to keep my hair back because I work around food.  I usually just braid it but would like other options.

i also find that a tightly wound bun held by 2 hairsticks is secure enough for a whole day....as long as the sticks go through enough of the layers...i know its done right if it feels slightly tight (oo that rhymes!) 

I answered my own question. I put my hair in a bun yesterday with hair sticks. My son and a friend managed to flip the kayak they we're in (they're ok, both have badges in water safety and lifeguarding). After being alarmed and running 1/2 mile my hair was still very secure.

As for my son and his friend, they admitted that they we're horsing around so I am very unhappy with them.

"Rubbery" barrettes I found today

I love this board and I'm such a newbie I hope this won't be "old news".

I found some barrettes today at Wal-Mart called Vidal Sassoon Soft Touch and my fine hair loves them!
They come 4 on a card in varying earthy colors from light to dark, they are a single piece of plastic with a matte feel, almost rubbery to the touch.  There is no metal and the inside is textured with smooth wavy ridges.  They are relatively flexible so they might work for some with more hair than I have, as well.

They sell for $1.93 (for 4) at Wal-mart.  I bought one card, tried them, and went back and bought 2 more for a total of 12 barettes!

Vidal Sassoon is a subsidiary of Helen of Troy but haven't looked for them online yet.

Yup!  Sometimes you can find it in pet shops too, it's used to repair aquariums :)

Another question, please: What section of the boards would I find information about terminal lengths?

Do people with fine hair tend to have shorter terminal lengths or is that irrelevant?

I've searched all over the Internet for good information on terminal length, and even on the hair science sites, the information seems to be mostly hearsay. One text had a picture of a man and a woman (both from behind), saying that neither had had a haircut in 3 years. The man's hair was about 4 inches long, and the woman's was at bsl.

But the man's hair looked healthy and trimmed, not wild and shaggy like it ought to if he had reached terminal length. Think long, shaggy beard - that's what the ends of your hair should look like if you reach terminal length.

And if his growth cycle was so short that his maximum length was 5", that would mean each hair fell out after only 10 months of growth. He would need to lose 10% of his hairs every month, that's 10,000 hairs! 330 hairs a day! That's something that they never consider.

They also fail to consider that the length-limiting factor for most people is not terminal length, but hair care. So if your hair only reaches a certain length, and breaks off below that, you would still appear to have reached terminal length.

A lot of sites say that hair longer than 1 meter is basically impossible, unless you have very exceptional hair growth and are a freak of nature, and that for most people, terminal length is somewhere between the shoulders and the waist. But we know from women's long hair sites that almost everyone who tries to reach classic, and takes really good care of their hair, not only does get their hair that length, but has to keep it trimmed if they want it to stay that length.

I think that  they make too many baseless assumptions, and that the definitive research on terminal length, based on measurements taken on people who think they have reached terminal length, has yet to be done.

I used to have knee-length hair myself. It was no big deal, and it was certainly still growing. The only reason I got it cut was I was unable to reach the end of it with a brush, and my now-ex-husband wasn't interested in helping with it. That was 20 years ago, I can't imagine how long it would be now if I'd had proper hair minions instead of a husband like him.

one day we will stumble across these hair minions.....or maybe even oompa loompas! its only a matter of time........mwahahaha!
