looking for a deep conditioner
Dec 12th, 2004 at 2:42pm

Hi all!

I've always used olive oil as my deep conditioner, but lately even when I rinse for ages, I still have a build up of it on my hair and have to wear braids until my next wash day to really get it out.  I guess now that I'm taking better care of my hair it doesn't need quite that much?

Anyway, I'm looking for a deep conditioner to mix with shea butter, or a carrier oil like jojoba for a bi-monthly deep conditioning treatment to be left on for at least a few hours and possibly overnight.  I'd like something that I can wash out with my CO routine so I don't have to go back to shampoo.

Does anyone have something they really like?

Thanks!

Hi Valerie !

I've been using canned coconut milk on my hair.  The brand I use is "Asian passage" - it's in a light green can with an overlay of dark green bamboo leaves.

It has thick chunks of "coconut fat" - it's not like solid coconut oil at all because it washes out so much easier.

Anyway, I open the can and scoop out the pieces and apply them to my hair (when it's dry).  I then pour what's left of the milk over my hair and leave it for an hour or so.

It rinses out easily with just one application of shampoo - I haven't tried CO with this particular treatment.

It leaves the hair soooooo soft and shiny - and the smell is heavenly.  Try it !  I love it !

That sounds very neat, I'll have to try it out.

I live in Denver, but recently visited San Francisco.  It was great!

I haven't really tried there stuff, but I like how affordable it is.  I was hesitant because the only person I know that uses it has shoulder length hair and isn't trying for any longer, but I will have to look into it.  Thanks!

I really, really love Biolage Conditioning Balm.  It is kind of pricey depending on what size you buy, but it can be diluted or just use a little on your fingertips and it lasts forever.  No cones in this one.

You can put a bit of the BCBalm in a spray bottle, add distilled water and either a couple of drops jojoba oil or the oil out of a vitamin e cap as a preservative.

Shake well and you've got a great spray on, leave-in conditioner with no cones and at a fraction of the cost.

How does deep conditioning work anyway? Is it just a conditioner you put in while washing or is it something else that you leave in? I'm confused. Can anyone enlighten me?

When I deep condition I'm looking for something to put on my hair and leave on for anywhere from 30min to overnight, then wash out.

Some things I like to mix with olive oil:

Shea butter
Almond oil
Honey
Eggs
Yogurt
Coffee (because my hair is dark - you could try a chamomile tea or something)

I love all-natural kitchen products!  Wink

aaaaah, almond, i've been putting loads these days to have an excuse to SHAMPOO my length (i use this emulsion with sunscreen which makes my hair seem so much fuller, shinier, less slippery, but it can get a bit too tacky after a few days). i love it! only today i finally tried almond as a leave in (i use refined almond though, it's the only thing they had in the supermarket). i read some people find it gives way more shine than jojoba. my hair's so soft & shiny now, and i am impressed how light it actually is.

I love Biolage Conditioning Balm too,I use it both as a regular or deep conditioner(leaving it on for about 20 minutes then).
Another (deep)conditioner I'm having very nice results with is Jessicurl 'Too Shea',leaves my hair feeling very moisturized but not weighed down at all.

Hi to all,

I just wanted to say hi and introduct myself.  I just wanted to say, "i love all of your ideas of deep conditioning your hair."  They all sound fantastic!

I have good way of deep conditioning too.  Now, this may sound messy but it is worth it after then long run.  What I do is I get a tablespoon of TCB Scalp Conditioner, and a tablespoon of vasaline.  I put them into a small glass bowl, and I heat it up in the microwave for 3 or 4 minutes.  Or, heat it to a comfortable temperature that you can stand.  Then part your hair in small sections, and poor the vasaline and TCB onto your scalp from your spoon a little at a time, and as you are applying it to your scalp you massage it into your scalp.  Then after you have applied and have massaged it all over your scalp then you shampoo it out with Alberto-VO5 shamppo for normal hair about 3 to 5 cyclings.  That's what I do every week.

But if you do get all of the oils out with the 3 cyclings of shampoo you can shampoo it again the next day.  Even though I'm a person with chemically-treated hair I always follow this procedure.  Because, it helps my hair and scalp from drying out.  So, I'm a person that has to shampoo every other day or everyday.  Because I get a lot of oil build-up.  But as I am washing it daily I always condition it right behind it.  I think I also have the type of hair and scalp where it gets oily.

hmmmmm - sorry but there is no way I would put vaseline in my hair - it would NEVER come out.  I'd suggest using aloe vera gel instead of the vaseline.

Yeah, I used to think the same thing about using the vasaline but it eventually comes out after 3-5 shampoo cycles.  My hair is between fine/thick so when I use my Alberto VO5 shampoo about 3 or 5 times it's usally all out or the majority of it but I know for a fact with your  hair texture and type it will take forever for you to get it all out.

My aunt which is a beautician told me a lot about the vasaline thing.  She told me that when you hair is severely damaged or dry you can give you hair a good hot oil treatment with vasaline.  The only thing that I'm concerned about with vasaline is clogging up the drain in the shower.  But I have a good plan for that too.  I just get the draino out!!!  But for the last few years I haven't had to do this method though.  My hair has always been very healthy over the last 5 years.  The only kind of hot oil treatments I had to do was the alberto vo5 ones that comes in the tubes. They say that you can do the hot oil treatments weekly or however often you feel that your hair is in need of it.  I always do my hot oil treatments after a chemical service like a relaxer and a coloring process.  The hot oil treatments and deep conditioning really helps my chemically treated hair.  I know that if I really want to grow longer hair faster I shouldn't be doing the relaxers and the coloring but they both are not really doing any harm to my hair. I know that I've read a lot on this board about how applying chemicals to your hair will cause a lot of damage to it but I've been relaxing my hair for years, and my hair always grew long, and the coloring too.  You just have to know how to take good care of your chemically treated hair.

Some people just don't know how to take good care of chemically treated hair right.  If you don't take care of it right then yes you are definately going to end up with damaged and broken off hairs.  And I always get compliments on my long thick hair!!!  My hair may not be as long as yours and others on here but they are also noticing a lot of growth and thickness.  They are even asking me what grease or vitamins I am taking.  But I always tell them.....the thickness is very natural but the vitamins I am taking to help my hair stay thick and growing long is hairformula37, and Nature's Bounty for Hair, Skin, and Nails.  I take all of those vitamins altogether in one day, and  both products really helping my hair to grow thicker and longer very well!!!! They have also improved the health of my hair too!!!!  Since I've been taking both products they have helped my hair to look and stay very healthy.  I mean, I can naturally grow healthy long hair but the vitamins helps it to stay that way, and I don't hardly ever have any split ends at all.  I haven't had a trim since November of last year I think.  I only trim my ends twice a year or whenever it is needed. I always check my ends for split ends, and if I don't see any I don't trim.  My mother has been the same way, and her hair is really growing longer too!!!

She has even passed me up a little.  I would say about an inch she has more than me.  I'm really surprised!!!  Because, by now she would really have very short hair like a pixie style.  But I strongly encouraged her to grow out her hair, and to just let it grow don't ever cut it.  I always encourage her to keep it long, and try to help her to make decisions on what to do with it at night, and to see what styles she can wear it in.  So, that she doesn't decide to go cut it.  I mean, she has beautiful health shiny black hair!!!!  I would really hate to see her cut all of that beautiful long black hair off!  I would say that her hair is almost about 2" away from bra strap length. I've encouraged her to just let her hair grow out as long as it can.  Now, the longest her hair has ever been was shoulder blade length not anything longer but I have a strong feeling that she can grow it a little longer than that if she just let it grow. If she grows hair waist length or classic length I will  be really shocked!!!  I've read from other ladies either on here or on the FLHC2 website saying that all of their lives the longest their hair was mid back length or waist length, and they never  believed that they could grow floor length hair but they did.  Or, one lady used to have hair down to the middle of her back, and it hadn't been that long in years.  But after she started taking the hairformula37 vitamins her hair started growing longer like to her waist!!!
