Wanted: bun ideas
Dec 29th, 2004 at 9:33am

So, my hair has grown out of my old bun styles (posted below). Right now, the only bun I'm able to do, is a cinnamon bun.

So I need ideas for new bun styles that can be done on hair still shorter than BSL. The style should have hope of lasting in slippery hair.

Styles I've already tried and found not working include: braided bun, French Twist, chinese bun, pony bun.

i am in the "same" boat ... i'd like to have more bun-ideas- with-hairsticks-only on longer hair ... these days i am into 8 buns, they are indeed better balanced than the regular one.

i have no ideas for shorter hair since i never made that kind of things back then.

Hi.  I don't know what a chinese or pony bun is, so if this is redundant, forgive me.
In the book "Hair, A book of Braiding and Styles" by Anne Akers Johnson there is a beautiful (to me) Upside-down french braid (p. 58-59)  Turn your head upside down, begin a french braid from the neck down to the crown of your head, make a few rounds of a basic braid.  Then straighten up, gather your unbraided hair together with the braided hair, twist it together high on your head and coil it into a bun.
I'm anxiously awaiting the day when I can wear this style (with hairstix, of course!), the hairs at the neck are just a tad too short right now.

That sounds really interesting Smiley though I'm afraid that my hair is still a bit short. I can French braid, but the regular braid part of it is still very short.

Here you can find instructions to Chinese bun and to many other lovely hairdos (that require longer hair than I have  Roll Eyes )

I just checked out long hair loom and saw the Chinese bun-thanks for the link!
So now that I've seen it-how do you make it???
I think the upside down braid might not be too bad if you practice doing headstands regularly Smiley

Wow Shocked  I got lost in the long hair loom site.  Major, major
hair envy

Thanks for the link, Galadriel.
I was excited to find that with the right tools I really may be able to do a bun for the first time in 3-4 years Grin

Finally a new bun idea that works for me!

Figure Eight Bun for shorter hair

Requires a ponytail holder, three metallic hair pins and a bun net. Required hair length: my hair is in halfway between shoulderline and BSL, I suppose that this is the minimum length for this bun to work.

1. Make a ponytail to crown level. Be sure, that it's tight enough.
2. Twist your hair until it begins to coil. Allow it coil a full turn.
3. Hold the coiled part with one hand, and make a loop with the rest of your hair (try to twist the hair while doing this) so that the result looks like number 8. Try to tuck the end a bit under the middle part (where loops cross).
4. Attach the bun: while holding the middle part tightly, insert first pin. Insert additional pins to up and down. Be sure, that you don't have hair sticking out. Flip a bun net over the bun. Voila! You have just completed a genuine-looking figure 8 bun with your shorter hair.

In my hair, this looked very pretty. I also tried the infinity bun variation, but as it is horizontal, it is more difficult to make with shorter hair.

Sorry to bump up an old thread, but this updo has saved my life on many a rushed morning:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=288240&postcount=4

If you don't want to leave the ends hanging down, it's easy enough to twist or braid them around the bun.  Since my hair is so slippery, I need to weave a pair of hairsticks through the elastic to keep everything in place.  (Boo hoo hoo; another reason to wear my LL hairsticks  Cheesy)

Thanks for that link 13bodies!  That's a great style, especially for hair that does not want to stay in an nice sized bun just yet.

My mother used to make her buns using a hair-rat in the shape of a donut.  She used an old nylon (back when they really were nylon!) and filled it with her own hair from her brush.  Using a a sock would give more bulk.
