Redhead Stereotypes
Dec 29th, 2004 at 8:59pm

Awhile ago I was talking to my friend, and I can't remember what exactly we were talking about but at one point he jokingly said something to the effect of "I know how you redheads are."

So, how are we? Do you think any of the stereotypes than come with red hair (being fiery, short tempered, willful, etc) fit you?

I have several red head friends.  They all agree that being a red head is more an attitude than a color!   Grin

I agree with Bikerbraid.  It's an attitude.

For myself, perhaps I'm a bit willful and fiery.  I have a very long fuse, however.  Once I've had my fill of a situation, stand back.  I can throw a red headed hissy fit with the best of them.  My grandmother used to call me a "little spitfire". LOL

I am redhead - Hear me roar!

For me personally, I would consider myself willful and firey...but not to the point of being mean. I've found that Americans particularly have the stereotypes down pat whenever I go to the States. ("Oh so you're from Ireland AND a redhead? {insert smart arsed comment about temperment here})

I don't mind it though. I find it rather amusing. Keeps 'em on their toes.  Wink

Strawberryfine, I'm with you.  I have a long fuse but when I reach the end of my rope LOOK OUT!!!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeyaaahhh!  *pretend kung foo kick*

My grandmother used to call me "little Branwen."  Branwen is the Welsh goddess of love and I suppose...

Heck hath no fury like a woman's scorn (and red hair.. Ha!)

Most of the redheads I have known have been nice and long tempered Cool

Has anyone heard this one:  A redhead is a blonde with an attitude Shocked

I don't think hair color has anything to do with attitude or manner.

well, I'm more a dark redbrown, myself... But I've noticed a bit of a temper. Sadly, I was always so reserved and shy that it's almost impossible to make me explode. Not so my mother. I don't know that she's got a temper, per se, but I do know for a fact that she's caused at least two school principals, and at least four teachers, to quit. My brother was something of a troublemonkey when he was in school, and she wouldn't tolerate corporal punishment being used on either of us without her permission... She'd get a bit testy when he'd come home bruised from a VP's paddle.
That's not including the poor managers at every fast food restaurant in the town I lived in in alabama... I think one is still a nervous wreck 12 years later.  Undecided

My hair is red/blonde going white/gray,  my temperment over time has mellowed out.  I used to have a short fuse, but now I notice it has gotten longer.  I guess as I get older, the things that used fire me up dont anymore.  But---once I get going EVERYONE leaves the building!!!   Grin

A creepy guy at work yesterday said "Pretty red hair on that girl... do redheads really hav more fun?"

...yeah. Weird. But I agree, it seems like a lot of redheads are fiery, although long-fused. Maybe we are that way because we think we're supposed to be?

Pixie, I think there is something to be said for expectations-if we buy into them then we make the stereotype true.

There is one reason that the feisty, hot-tempered redhead stereotype exists: the Irish.

And you know what? It's not just a stereotype. It's the truth. Celts are notoriously passionate and short-fused. It doesn't take much to set us off. Irish tempers are nothing that you want to mess with, I promise you!

That said, Celts and Irish folk have hair of every color. Redheads just take most of the heat for it.

Nice topic to run into... I'm puertorican and a red head and people always think I either have a short fuse (which I admit I do have at times) or that I'm always looking to get in trouble... it's pretty funny how many stereotypes there are depending on your hair color...

I used to be called "Rubia Peligrosa" aka Dangerous Blond cause or Carrot top simply because of my light colored hair as a child and my slight temper tantrums...

I heard a different comment about red hair at a cosmetology convention once:
"Blondes have more fun, but redheads have no regrets."

I'm not sure how to take that, but it sounds kind of cool. Cool

This is an excellent topic to come in on!  I remember one of my reading professors in college said to me once as she saw my red hair colored was......red hair is a form of anger.  I didn't know how to take that.  Now, I do find myself getting angry at some things but as I've gotten older I don't let things make me angry anymore.  I have a long fire hose in me. A saying I once heard was, "date the blond, marry the brunette, but you'll never forget the redhead"....me likey.

Another..."there are two types, redheads...and those that want to be one!" Smiley
