Thanks for all of the responses!  I'd love to see your takes on the styles I've posted or maybe a new twist on something shown here.

That sounds fun - I'll play!  Here is my interpretation of your first pic.  It looked to me like a French braid and a bun.  My hair is longer, so instead of one bun, I coiled 3 times upwards to end in the same spot as yours.  I loosely tucked the end under the last coil so that some hairs still stuck out.

...

Thanks, that was fun (and challenging since I'm really bad with French braids.)

Thanks!  Though when I looked at my pic again just now, my first thought was "armadillo".  My second thought was "pillbug".  LOL  Sakina wears the style much better, me thinks!

Okay, I've been inspired...nothing fancy, I'm still in the "learning to walk" stage as far as updo's go.  My big announcement today

*drum roll*

a bun with just hairsticks
~~~TA-DA!!!~~~
*bows to applause*
(it fell apart only after having to put on and take off a TB respirator mask at work - trying to get the elastic strap over the hairsticks just didn't work too well Sad.)
PreciousLocks,
YAY!!!  Every babystep counts, and someday they'll add up to a giant leap!
Khrome,
Right on!  Beautyful!  Your braid looks great-I don't see the bug connection.
However, technically the first pic is not what you thought.  This is the directions I originally wrote in my journal March 2, 2005:
"Last night I came up with a really cool new hairdo.
Take the hair from ear to ear across the back of the head and make a pony, use a ponytail holder.  Twist into place.  Add a pair of hairsticks.
Then, take the hair that is hanging down and twist it, as in making a french twist.  Do not twist too tightly.  Take the twisted hair and wrap it around one side of the bun (my hair's about 20 inches, so it only went 1/2 way around the bun) and secure it at the top with a pin, another pin at the side to attach it to the bun and then one more pin near the base.  Use your fingers to "comb" the the hairs smooth to make it look neater.  It was very pretty, of course I wore it with my Bridal Lily bridalsticks."
I can see how you thought it was braided, 'cause of taking the hair in two parts to make the style.  So its really a 1/2 pony bun and semi french twist with the tail wrapped around the bun.  Hope this makes sense!
PreciousLocks - congrats!  Buns are still a challenge to me.  For some reason I can secure other styles easier.
Sakina - Silly me, I should have looked in your journal entries!  duh.  Next time!  About the pillbug - is that would you call those rolly-polly bugs?  I think my French braids make my head look like a giant rolly-polly.   Cheesy  Ohyeah, I used to call them Potato Bugs, but someone said that was wrong when I was older.
Done! Best times are end of May and June and of course September. Early September would be perfect. Less tourists on the islands, not extremely hot weather, maybe an occasional rain. Soooo....when are you coming?  Grin Grin
Sorry, G_L-it took me awhile to find where this was again (I lost track of it) and so, if you're serious September 2006 may find me on your doorstep.  PM me w/details, suggestions.  And a list of any particular stix you want me to bring...
