Do redheads actually have more fun?
Sep 29th, 2005 at 1:33am

I had a funny experience at work today and I wondered if anyone has had a similiar experience.  I am a redhead and live in San Antonio, TX where the population is predominately Hispanic so red is not a common color.

I am a nurse and we were finishing up a procedure where the patient had some sedation.  As I was getting ready to transport the patient he said, "I really like your hair."  I thanked him.  Then my patient said, "Tell me a story."  I was not entirely sure I had heard him right (and he did have sedatives in his system)  I asked him to repeat himself and he requested a story about something interesting I have done.  He said, "With hair like that you must lead a very interesting life."

True, there is a picture of me with a bird on my head on this board  Shocked but that is about as interesting as my life gets.  I was wondering if anyone else, especially my fellow redheads, have had a similiar experience.

Heehee that was cute of the patient.

I'm not a redhead, but it would be interesting to see what others have to say.  I've seen "experiments" on tv where they send someone out as brunettes, then bleach them blond, and sent them out to ask random people for directions.  People tended to be more friendly towards blonds, and more serious towards brunettes.  People who were the guinea pigs tended to have more self-confidence as blonds, though it was not really determined if it was because of the other people's reactions, or perception of themselves.

As far as the redheads I've known, and these are BIG generalizations - they've had "fiery" personalities (not necessarily angry, more like passionate about things), humorous, and loved to wear purple which set off their hair.

I do wear alot of purple and deep blue.  I would not describe myself as fiery but more stubborn.  Perhaps because I am a Sag (the most benign of the fire signs)  My husband knows the discussion/argument is over when I cross my arms over my chest.  And yes, I love a good practical joke.

I've seen those experiments where people do one thing as a blonde and the same thing again as a brunnette.  I would like to see them do some red head experiments too.

I used to work with a gal who had firery red hair.  She always said red hair wasn't a color - it was an attitude!  Grin  In her case it most certainly was!!

My doctor told me that redheads don't react to medications the same way those with other haircolors do.  ... As for the rest, I think that because readheads are relatively rare, people perceive them as being different and expect them to act that way.  ...

Haha! That's such a funny story!  Cheesy

Since the population here is mostly Asian and Polynesian, I don't know any redheads myself, but I definately have redhead envy. Except the one time when I was trying to go back to my natual color, I always chose a shade of red when I used to dye my hair. I don't see to many people with naturally red hair, so it's definately a neat color.  Smiley

It's true, redheads will sometimes react differently to medications.  But what I have noticed most is that redheads will bleed like crazy when having surgery.  (I have been an operating nurse for 13 years)  I personally bled alot after my c-sections.

I guess since red is associated with intensity and passion in the western culture people expect redheads to be intense and passionate

I have many red-headed friends in my art college, so maybe they're artistically inclined, too? Smiley
