Oh, I forgot to mention that each hair consists of layers of dead keratinized cells.  In short, hair is not living.  Caring for it, if you will, is rather like keeping a car well polished (conditioning, etc) and fixing dents so they don't rust (trims).  Sorry to take the glamour out of something so beautiful, but what I am saying is...if it is dead...how are vitamins and such going to help it?

Ok, now that you all hate me...I will slink away.

my mom and two aunts work for the univ. of mich. hospital, so i'm pretty well versed in diet and how toxic some vitamins can be for some people.
that being said, i am a normal 28 year old with no deficiencies or anything and i'm pretty sure taking pre-natal vitamins are not going to harm me, since i did it for 10 months and managed to stay alive AND pop out a healthy 9 and a half lb. babe.
i think most of us are aware that hair is a 'dead' thing, but there are things that can cause your hair to grow, which is what i think most of us are trying for.  same as nails, nail growth is a dead thing, but you can take and do a lot to make them grow.

As I said at the beginning of my little discussion, some people need supplements based on health, etc.  Prenatal supplement are important during pregnancy.  I am not saying that they should not be used.  I am just suggesting one should be aware of what they are taking and whether or not it is needed.

I just read something that might be of interest to people.  As I am sure you know, many woman are anemic and many do not know it (I know I didn't when I found out last year).  So ladies, it is a good time to go check your iron levels since, as I am sure many of knew and forgot, anemia causes hair loss.  Iron supplements for anemia are easy to get if needed and the iron in a vitamin supplement is not nearly high enough to deal with anemia.

Be very careful with iron supplements. Very heavy for the system altogether. It's not your "regular" vitamin and shouldn't be taken lightheartedly. Just my 2c.

I agree with greek lady, iron supplement should ONLY be taken at the recommedation of your physician.  This is why I indicated you should test if you are anemic.  In Cdn you can only get them if you ask behind the counter (although they are not presciption)  I do not know what is like in the rest of the world.  DO NOT TAKE IRON SUPPLEMENTS IF YOUR DOCTOR HAS NOT RECOMMENDED THEM AND TOLD YOU HOW MUCH TO TAKE!!! Too much iron ( as with vitamins A, D, E and K) is dangerous.

As some of you may have read, I indicated that hair is kertainized dead cells.  It was sent to me that we can promote growth for nails and hair.  Having access to gov't files I can tell you after much research today (don't worry, not on tax dollars, I found out I can go back to work soon and set up my computer at work and worked this out on my own time as I am not back in the next couple of weeks), no, there is no way to premote growth, proven by studies (that is ... so far).
There are many studies that indicate that vitamins and amino acids with promote  HEALTHY hair growth, but not expidiated hair growth.  There is one study that suggests that a couple of amino acids (which I will not name here for reason to follow) will promote hair growth, but they will be at the detriment to other organs in the body.  Remember, while we want to grow long hair, we must keep our whole body in equilibrium.  Not to mention that you would need to get these amino acids at a presciption strength to get them.

As for nail growth, calcium and vitamins will prevent nails from breaking but not increase growth.

I have found that vitamins and such are good for preventing hair loss and that vitamins and amino acids are good for healthy hair growth...but I can find nothing in the published, scientific data that will promote hair growth.

That said, science is always changing...maybe tomorrow I will find something...and I will be happy to share it with you all.

joeydog - thanks for your scientific spin on things.  I've always tried to promote that being a healthy person will promote healthy hair and there are no miracle products to grow hair.

Two health factors that I know will affect hair growth negatively are anemia and thyroid problems.  Neither are conditions to be taken lightly, nor be treated without a medical professional's input.  I fought anemia for many many years.  Fortunately I was able to handle it with diet and over the counter supplements (under the advisement of my doctor).
