What can I do about Henna?
Oct 18th, 2006 at 11:23pm

Hello to All,

I am new to this board.  I had long hair for years before I stupidly chopped it off in favour of a more modern look.  This was my first mistake in my trial and error of hair woes.  My next mistake, which I am currently dealing with, is Henna.  My original hair colour is light brown, I can lighten it a bit with chamomile spray, but I have always wanted to go fully blonde.  After being told by several people that I would probably look better as a redhead, I coloured my hair with Henna, hoping for a light orange.  The colour I got was nice, but not the shade I wanted.  Also, after a few months the brightness of the Henna faded and now it just looks dark brown with remnants of red in the sunlight.  I am desperate to get rid of it and finally plunge into the blonde hair I have always coveted, but I have heard that Henna is near to impossible to remove and you can't bleach or colour over it with chemical dyes.

Someone please help me!  I don't want to have to wait to grow the Henna out (as my hair is just starting to get long again), and I don't want to keep it short while trying to cut the Henna out.  Are there any successful women out there who have used chemical colour over Henna??

Advice is greatly appreciated!!

Cheers,
Lady Kai

Lady Kai, welcome to longlocks!  I'm sorry I don't have any advice to give you other than to take your time making a decision about what to do with your hair.
Perhaps consult with a color specialist at a salon?

Good luck!

Thanks Sakina, it looks like I will have to play the waiting game I fear.   Cry
I have heard that some specialists are able to turn henna'd hair blonde but that it is a very tricky process and they don't really like to do it.  Fortunatley I have a friend of the family who is a hairdresser at a very reputable salon so I will ask her for advice.  She's never wanted to see me blonde though, so her advise might be biased.  Tongue  But it looks like the wisest way is to just grow it out...

Danke,
Kai

Hi hairsister!

You´re in luck!!!!I´ve turned from henna red to blond to black to blond and so forth for 16 years.I started with thick brown hair and have a very nice hair quality still although just a bit thinner.

You propably experience that your hair is much dryer now before you put a conditioner in it. Don't worry! Most semicolors from for exemple L'oréal,Garnier and Schwartkopf have deep conditioners today that actually softens the hair so it becomes less dry!!!!!

I can recommend Colour experte from Lóréal 7.0 to lighten the hair and add some hilights. After a week you can put in a golden blonde color like Garniers Nutrisse cream 7.3to get a more even and blonder shade.

I´ve used all sorts of henna and all sorts of bleach and I´m not bald yet.I know that every human being on the earth tells me it´s impossible. But it works for me and hopefully for you to.

Finally use a silverschampoo to get rid of red tones.Especially if you wanna go really blond. The silver schampoo (wich is blue to the color) acts as a very good conditioner to your hair and it gets really babysoft. It´s a little expensive.I use Lóreal or schwartskophs (at hairdressers).

I tell you I haven´t got one split end and my hair is long, black and soft.I had henna orange hair just the other day.......

Hope I´ve been able to help.Remember to deep condition your scalp often while doing the transformation!!!I recommend coco nut oil.
Hugs!!

Liebe daughter_of_fire,

I see fata morgana  Cool has already given you some great tips about how you might try and lighten your color and get the henna out step by step, but don’t forget to test any coloring before you put it on you whole head. Some people do that by picking a single lock of the hair still on their head, but I’d recommend collecting hair from your brush or comb for a couple of days, the more the better and then try the dye on that. If your patient and collected enough you can even try out different dyes or how long to leave the dye in.

As far as I know split ends and dry hair isn’t the worst thing to worry about, but for your hair to turn green.  Undecided That is why hair experts always tell people to wait till all the henna has grown out until they try to lighten their hair with chemical dyes, some components can turn henna dyed hair a sea-ish, green. So make sure you test any dye before you put it on your head, and to take a look at your test results outside in natural light, because I have seen women whose hair looked perfectly normal inside, but once the sun hit it you could see the green shine through  (Something which can also happen to natural blonds if they use the wrong, industrially treated kind of henna  Undecided)

Hey, fata morgana, am I reading this right? I’m not the only one who experienced their hair becoming dryer after using henna? Because I always thought, everyone told me how good it was supposed to be for my hair, why has no one ever mentioned it dries it up, too? In fact, that was the reason I came on today, to check for conditions you guys would recommend, so I don’t have to cut it short again… Roll Eyes

Hi Zariva!

I can recommend you a lot of conditioners that can help repair your hair. After a week without henna and having pampered your hair everyday (leaving oils in your hair at night) you can colour your hair with a semicolor (not permanent).Today they do wanders with hair!!!Take it from me. I only use H&Ms own brand (I think we only have their brand in Sweden). The best thing is to go some shades darker than what you have now.The red colour from henna ( I had orange..) goes away after the second coloration.I tried the new glossy clour from Garnier(?)and went with bluish black.Perfecy result and all the dryness went away like magic.I can recommend my own trick to condition in 1 second or in days...namely Niveas bodylotion with almondoil for very dry skin.Put it in your hair and scalp before you schampoo or leave it over night (your hair "drinks" the lotion as it´s dry and it doesn´t leave marks on the pillow). I love all aloe vera and tea tree conditioners. My own rescue when I have used henna is Wella conditioner for dry and damaged hair (yellow). It leaves my hair perfect!!!!Before putting on a towel, when washed, I put a peas size of the conditioner on the hair as it it so wanting moist.

I get comments everyday about my moist anf shiny hair!!I don´t know your haircolour but if it´s black you will get good result!!!

Swedish hugs to you

Wow, thank you for the tips, feta Morgana! I’m quite happy with the very natural-looking Redhead the henna turned me into from the Natural Blonde I was before, so I’m not thinking about going back. But yeah, the fact that my hair dried up like that after everyone told me how good henna was supposed to be for your hair made me think and now I know I’m not the only one

I’ll definitely try the Nivea on my hair, that honestly something I have never thought of before. So far all I’ve put in over night was coconut or almond oil, but that the lotion might actually be easier for my hair to absorb is something that never occurred to me before.  Smiley

I have to say, though, I don’t like Wella much… I had trouble using it before, itchy scalp and all that. I prefer Redken, ‘specially the Butter Treat stuff. But it’s very expensive here in Germany Tongue otherwise I’d be using it every day Wink
And yeah, you’re right, although we have some of H&M’s make-up and hair products in Germany I have never seen hair dye being sold here Roll Eyes But I do like their strawberry mask for hair… it makes my hair look like I blow-dried it and then used hairspray to keep it looking fresh, even though I did neither! Love that!
I wish they were selling the dye here, too Tongue

But, yeah, the problem is, like daughter_of_fire said, the problem isn’t really to go from henna to dark, it’s to go from henna to blond… tough nut to crack, no matter how much to moister… it might still turn green. Well I hope it turned out ok for daughter_of_fire, but I can say I don’t feel the need to go back to blond. It’s true, more boys might be hitting on you, but they’re not necessarily the kind of guys I’m interested to see, of you know what I mean Wink
