long hair and negivtive side effects
Oct 31st, 2006 at 5:19pm

I have heard that if you have thick hair as it grows it can cause strain on your scalp and neck 9which makes sense) has anyone here ever experenced this or know someone who has. I know that with my almost BSL length thick, coarse, curly hair I have had a few more headaches than I did when my hair was shorter (but i also get migraines so it could judt be them too) any input?

My theory is that as your hair gets longer, the scalp actually gets stronger so that the hair is not pulled out by its own weight.

My hair is fairly fine, so my buns are not real big, but some days I feel like my neck is tired from holding my head up with the weight of the hair in back.  When that happens, I usually just let my hair down for a while and everything is fine again.

I agree with Bikerbraid.

Hair is not heavy at all it only becomes a problem for the scalp when you concentrate the weight of your hair in one area rather than letting the weight be evenly spread over your scalp.

For example tying your hair up all day every day is very bad for your scalp especially if you do the same style each day because you are constantly putting more weight on a certain area of your scalp.

Hair should be left down when at home or in a very loose low pony if able to.

I would suggest changing your hairstyles by creating two bunches at the back of the haed rather than one to spread the weight more.

or have it half up and half down

The problem of weight and headache only comes when putting hair up not leaving it down.

Keeping hair up protects it from splits but once your haed feels a little achey you need to take it down straight away as you could be causing premeture hair loss.

Never put strain on your hair from hairbands.

i knew someone who had very thick curly hair and had the same problem. her solution was to have the underneath shaved. her problems stopped. however, whenever she put her hair up thats all you could see and it lookes awful in my opinion but its what she wanted. im not suggesting you do this, but its something to think about.

Hi, my hair is thick, heavy, and thigh length.  The only time it gives me a headache is when I put it up too tight.  As the weight of my hair pulls downward, then that puts too much pressure on the front area.  I dont get headaches when wear it down, which is most of the time.  Smiley.

My hair is curly and was very long (tailbone-hip length) for a while.  I used to wear it down all the time and the only time I remember it hurting was when I wore it in a high bun for a long time.

I have worked with Native americans and every one knows that preaty much all of them have very long hair. I always noticed they had bands. so I one day went up to a woman with below bum hair and asked isnt your hair heavy. She replied yes and that is why she had to cut bangs. the wieght of the hair pulls on the front and gives you hair strain in the front. Well at least that is what she had told me. I had to cut bands aswell. I noticed I was getting a reseading hair line due to me pulling it back in pony tail. but its growing back of course so now Im letting my bangs grow back out .

The receeding hair line is more from the constant tension on the hair when pulled back into a ponytail or bun than it is the weight of the hair.  If you look at gymnysts, figure skaters, and ballet dancers, their hair isn't necessarily all the long or heavy, but they wear it pulled back tightly so often that many of them have the receeding hair line.

It is best to change your hairstyles from day to day so that you do not overstress any one area of the scalp or hair.

I agree any scalp tension and/or receding hairlines is not from the weight of the hair but from the stress caused by the way the hair is styled. I used to wear my hair in a ponytail every other day for gym class, I experienced more scalp stress then with shoulder length hair then I do with my thick hair at mid back, because I'm not putting it into a ponytail as frequently. As the others said changing your hairstyle frequently helps, also so does how tight you make your style, and what you pull the hair back with. If it's a concern use it as a good excuse to add more hairstyles to your repertoire.  Wink

My hair is BSL and i pull it up quite often.I have never experienced a hedache because of the lenght of my hair!I would say it depends on the length and how thick or thin.My hair is pretty thin so It never feels weighed down! Smiley

my hair is tail-bone length thick straight hair, and the only time the eight gets to me is if it's up in a bun for a long time, or up tight or really high all day.  Left down, my hair is always the most comfortable.

Mine is at hip length now and I canīt say I have any more nack- or head pain then I had when I started here 3 years ago. Hair growing is a natural thing!!
