no poo

okay, I have been reading some articles about not using shampoo.  If I were to try this, would I start with clean hair?  How would I get the oilies out of my scalp hair? I understand it could take a couple of weeks to get my sebum balanced.  Would I use oil and condish on the ends still?  If I start w/clean hair, do I use just water the next wash day?  I know we have covered this topic or similar ones, I just dont where.  I am interested becuz of the psorisis issue my scalp is having.  I am wondering if it could be cuz of the shampoos?

Also, since I oil at nite b4 wash, how would I get the excess oil out of my length and ends?

I use shampoo only about every 10 days or so.  I actually use a product called No Poo by devachan.  You can also use your conditioner on your scalp instead of the shampoo.  I oil my scalp maybe once a month and when I do I use moisturizing shampoo to wash out the oil.

Give it a try.  It may take a few tries before you get it right, I really like the technique especially with my curly hair.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes!

I saw you wrote about psoriasis.  I dunno if this is a self diagnosis on your part or a true diagnosis.  If it is a doctors diagnsosis, then you should know that it is an autoimmune disease and no shampoo caused it and you need to treat it.  If you have self diagnosed it could be eczema or just dandruff (which could be caused by the poo).  If you really have psoriasis, check out

http://www.nutrimmune.ca/

and look into a tar shampoo.  The tar shampoo is hard on your hair so keep it as close to the scalp as possible and condition well after use.  Also, leave the shampoo on your scalp for 5 minutes before rinsing.  If it is true psoriasis, you made need corticosteroids as I do.

Eczema would also need diagnosis and a treatment.  I have not had that for years so I cannot tell you what you should think about doing with that.

BTW, the zinc zap seems to make my hair REALLY greasy but if I use and ACV rinse and shampoo, it does leave my hair wonderfully shiney and soft.

Sakina, I will have to look into this non-shampoo shampoo.  Interesting.  Do you know if vitamin E oil will help with hair or scalp at all?  I have never seen it in a recipe.  I happen to have some here for my dog and as I put it on him, I had to wonder.

Hi Joeydog, thanks for the info(Drs diagnosis).  I also breakout on my body  Cry.  Usually sitting in the sun (when we have it) for about an hour a week takes care of it (UV).  I know a lot of shampoos really irritate my scalp.  They make me want to scratch more, so I was thinking if I could get away with no poo, that mite solve some of my problems.  My dr doesnt have any more suggestions either.  I have to be careful with scent as it causes my asthma to go nuts so any poo with a heavy tar scent is out of the question cuz the scent remains in my hair sometimes  Sad.  Cant win for losing I guess.

Hey Debr,

Yup, that sucks.  Check out this.

http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic363.htm

If you look at caption picture 6, that is what has happened to my beautiful long nails in the last year.   Cry Cry Cry  In fact, my posiasis has progressed to psoriatic arthritis (don't panic...apparently only happens to 10% of people with nail psoriasis).  I have to see a rheumatologist next month.   Cry Cry

Yes, tar shampoo stinks and would probably bother you.  UV light does help,  but mine is too bad for that.  The zinc zap does not smell of anything.  I have a corticosteroid added to mine, but in the beginning I did not need it.  You might want to try it.  Like I said, it is really greasy but an ACV rinse and a shampoo take it out.  I use it at night and wash in the morning...shower cap needed!!

Sorry I cannot be more help.  Take care and let me know how you go on....oh, wait...one other thing that was suggested to me was using Neem shampoo bar from Ida of Chagrin Valley.  It is a really nice shampoo bar and can't hurt to try?  Sadly I need something much stronger.  Oh, and I found Coconut oil on my skin lesions helped a bit.

Whole Foods sells Neem shampoo, you might also find it at healthfood stores.

JD, I think Vitamin E oil will do more for you taken internally than applied externally for your current issues.  Of course, you could try it and see what happens.

On www.naturallycurly.com you will find a travel kit of devachan, it has 3oz bottles of no poo, one condition, angell and set it free.  Plus a dozen hairclips and a dvd.  Its a good deal to give the products a try.  Also, check out Lorraine Massey's book "Curly Girl Handbook" as it has different techniques on cleaning the hair gently.

My psoriasis is not that bad, mostly on my scalp.  It is sooo much better today.  I think it is becuz I have been sitting in the sun for a few minutes each day.  It is gonna be warm here today 90+ degrees.

Hey! You might be a perfect canidate for Water Only (WO).  If you want to continue using shampoo go to a health food store (like whole foods) and tell them how sensitive you are and see if they can recommend anything.

I also have a sensitive skin problem.  Luckily I only itch like a dog with fleas, no hives or psoriasis or whatever.   If I use regular shampoo and shower gel I get all itchy.

Oh, how about some of those shampoo bars?  I'll admit that I use organic shampoo, like Aubrey.  But it does have a strong smell, so it might bug your asthma.  (I will say that I don't like the smell of their shampoos, but my hair likes it, so, well what my hair wants it gets.) Tongue

I use goat milk soap, and I know that the goat milk soap maker makes shampoo bars.  Their regular soap doesn't make me itch at all.  It's very mild.  Maybe you can try some of their stuff.  She has some jojoba shampoo bars.

I stopped shampooing my hair about 5 months ago.  Most people who choose to just conditioner wash their hair do so because most shampoos contain sulfates in them, which are harsh detergents that are extremely drying to your hair.  Hair still needs cleansing and degunkifying, though, so there are a couple of choices people have:

1) Just conditioner wash your hair everyday

2) Make your own inexpensive shampoos.  I'm going to start using a mixture of apple cider vinegar and green tea to cleanse my hair in addition to my conditioner washes.

3) Go to your nearest health food store and get a sulfate free hair wash.  They often contain botanicals and natural agents that act as cleansers, like grapefruit juice and tea tree oil.

I don't know about no poo or psoriasis, but I have used baby shampoo with success at getting rid of my dandruff. It's much gentler than most shampoos, and may help you.
