I just don't get it

I guess it is a woman thing but why do ladies think they have to have a hair style for their wedding?

My wife was late for our wedding because my niece did her hair and showed up late so our wedding was about half an hour late just because she wanted her hair styled Roll Eyes
Her dad was more worried than I was but we were both happy she finally showed up.

I would have been happy to have her long hair loose and down because after all, I married her and not her hair Tongue

You know, I've never gotten that either.  I prefer it when brides wear their hair down as oppossed to doing up do's.  The only reasoning that I can think of is that perhaps they feel up do's are more elegant and or dressy.  Although, I feel that men love long hair on a woman and if you ask them, they'd probably agree with you as well. Funny, I wore my hair down at my wedding and never thought about having it up.  I never thought about not not having it up until you started this thread, Jerry!

I never dreamed of a wedding as a kid-I actually didn't plan on a hubby or kids.  So, when I fell in love and married A, I just wanted to get the ceremony over.  None of the "this is my day" crap.  EVERY day is my day, thank you very much and absolutly, Jerry, he married me not my hair.

BTW, I also wore a totally non traditional wedding dress, although it was custome made for me.

Weddings are special occasions, and just like you want your outfit for the day to reflect that, you want your hair to do the same.

Sux about your wife being late for the wedding though. It's fine to make yourself up, but for heaven's sake, at least be punctual!

I wasn't ever into weddings, and had one for myself after much deliberation.  However, I like to style my hair for any occasion and a wedding was no different.  I even get excited about styling my hair for other people’s weddings! I know my husband finds me attractive all the time, but he can tell a big difference when I feel attractive and we both have a lot more fun.

THAT'S ME EXACTLY!!!  Grin

I had never pictured myself married, or "planned my wedding" as a kid.  In all honesty, I didn't even plan my real wedding - my mother took charge of the arrangements.  I only planned the ceremony, and let my mother do the reception.  I wore a simple bridesmaid's dress and made my matron of honor's dress (my sister).  Hubby and I got married for our parents' sake.  We don't regret having had the ceremony - it certainly has made things easier for insurances and finances, etc.  We've been married for 33 years and have been together for almost 36 years.  I guess we were meant to be together!

As for hair, the fancy hairdo's have always been a tradition.  Many women look forward to a fancy style to exemplify the special day for them.  I think that is fantasic.  I also know that with wedding dresses as elaborate and expensive as they are, many women do not want to cover any part of the dress - so the hair is worn up so that the 100's of buttons down the back, and the 1000's of beads that may be on the dress  can be seen while they are in front of the guests.  (I know I worried about hair getting caught in the buttons when I was helping my now DIL with her dress.  Her almost waistlength hair was tangling in the buttons and beads, so she opted for an updo to prevent that.)

Whatever the decision - it should be the bride's decision how they wear their hair.

me personally? If/when I get married, I'm wearing an exact(or as exact as possible) replica of my mom's wedding dress. Even down to it being green. I also think I look beautiful with my hair down (not so much with it up) so down, it shall be. Then again, I don't exactly think I'd be having a traditional wedding anyway, although I might have to fight Paul's stepmom tooth, nail, hammer, and pickaxe on that one.

My mother had waist length hair and wore it down for her wedding. It was parted in the center and I think that she straightened the length and curled the very ends. It was a pretty simple wedding, but she looked great.  Smiley

Mine was the complete opposite. Ritzy Las Vegas wedding, huge, elaborate gown with a cathedral train (weighed more than I did!)...the veil was almost as long. My hair was waist length at the time, but I had it styled at the hotel salon in an elaborate updo with all sorts of fancy weaving in the back. Curls everywhere. Most of it ended up being covered by my veil anyway, so that was kind of a waste.

Had I the fortune (good or bad, lol) to marry again, I'd probably do things much differently. Wearing my hair down, for example, if I was able.

Generally, hairstyles tend to reflect the formality of the gowns and the event itself. The less formal the event, the more you can get away with in terms of a casual or funky style.

that's true... Mom had a fairly informal wedding... A halloween wedding, to be exact. The wedding party itself was dressed in medievalesque style, like this: for the ladies... and I don't have any pics of the guys. ...

Everybody else showed up in costumes too.. one of my uncles was batman, for instance... *rolls eyes* my least favorite uncle showed up in full monks robes(including a bald patch exactly like a tonsure) for a pagan, halloween wedding.

*edited to add: oh look, honest to gods, undyed K. Hair!!!

Robin, you have made it more clear to me Cool

But, since I am not the biggest fan of many updo's I would like long hair to be down in a wedding but that is just me Roll Eyes

In many ancient cultures loose locks were a symbol of an unmarried girl, and once women wed they were expected to hide their beautiful hairs.

Me personally? If I ever marry, I'll be wearing mine down! I agree that it is more elegant and lovely that way =)
