Stripping Hair
Feb 25th, 2008 at 9:02am

My sister has pretty rich brown hair, and she recently colored it a darker brown. It turned out pretty much black. She wants to strip it, but I was wondering if there are any home remedies for stripping color out of hair. She dyed it about 3 weeks ago, so it's  had some time to set in, and has probably already stained her hair pretty badly.
She also has a bottle of Sun-In. It says "not recommended for color-treated hair," but I looked on the bottle and it's just a mild bleach, so why would it be any different than having a stylist strip the color?
Any suggestions?

I'm sorry your sister's hair didn't turn out the way she wants.  I don't know of any home remedies, other than to apply oil (jojoba, olive, almond, coconut) the take out the color.  I don't know how much it will remove.

As for stripping it out, I'd beg her not to.  I did it once, and it took forever for my hair to not look and feel like straw.  If I'd known how incredibly damaging the process was, I'd have never done it and just stopped coloring.  In my case, my scalp was getting sensitive and just at the time I decided to grow it out and joined LongLocks I had gotten it colored again.  It was red, and she really did an intense coloring.  I think she had to strip it twice, with my curly hair texture I take color really well.  It scared me, my hair was so dry, broken, split and awful.

I hope she can get the result she wants with the oil, or has a favorite hat.

Good Luck!!!

Ditto what Sakina said.  Stripping color is extremely damaging to hair.  Oil will cause color to leach out - lessen the color, so I'd try that along with waiting a week or two to see what the color ends up looking like.  Many times color will naturally fade in a week or two - she may find she likes that color better.

Good luck.

I agree. I think her hair will naturally fade... if not, there wouldn't be people like me who are constantly re-touching dark color and investing tons of money in color conserve products!   Roll Eyes

Yeah, I'm not even sure what crossed her mind to try to dye dark brown hair even darker brown! Oh well. I made her promise not to strip it until she tried some of the things that I found out. Thanks so much, I'll tell her and let you know how it goes!

She told me her hair lightened a bit with the oils, but not as much as she hoped. She didn't tell me if she was going to strip it or not. I hope not! She lives 2 hours away, so I can't really stop her if she decides to do it.

I'd suggest Clairol UnColor. You can get a bottle of it at Sally's Beauty Supply. It is gentle and effective.

I had a really red Redken Shades EQ color(semi-permanent) color put on my hair a few months ago and was put under the dryer and it really set in.  It was far too bright for me.  I used Clairol "blue shampoo" and Metallix color remover from Sally's to take the color out.  It worked after several applications but now my hair is really tangley.  I am treating it with TLC and hope it will get better.  I hope the oils work for your sister.  As for the Sun-In, make sure it is a mild bleach and not a one-process color.  A lighter shade of just color will not lift the previous color; it takes bleach and a low volume developer (it takes a 10 volume mixed half and half with conditioner mixed with conventional bleach to cut it down to 5 volume developer) and close supervision or she might end up with a brassy redish color that is lighter than her natural color-not a pretty sight.  I was a hairstylist for 10 years.  I wish I had done this instead of what I did.  Has she tried a stronger shampoo like Prell or Head and Shoulders to make it fade?  It might help.  Also, sun exposure may lighten it but might be a little damaging to her hair.  In future, I hope she stays away from chemicals-color or perms.  I learned the hard way too.  Good luck to both of you.  I don't know much about Henna but a clear Henna might coat the hair making the texture better after she gets the excess color out.  Ask some of the members who have used clear Henna before she tries it.  I am considering it but need to learn more about clear henna first.  Any input on that?  Sorry if this is off topic.  Hope this helps at least a little.

I'd say that she can still strip it but be very very very careful.  I''ve had bleached blonde hair reaxed hair, and it grew very fast!!!  My hair now is still bleached strawberry blonde and relaxed, and it is still growing fast!!!

Hi Pixie!

lots of years ago, i dyed my brunette hair black- i'd done it before and never had any traumatic experiences- but for some reason, this time, i missed a huge spot in the back. i was scared to redye that soon so i decided i'd have to wait it out- till it faded or i could redye it. i used mane'n'tail shampoo & conditioner ( just because that's what i had at the time) and my hair was brown again in about a month. this was very weird- unplanned and unexpected. i don't know if this has happened to other people? perhaps i'm the lone freak, anyway, i hope this helps your sister- best of luck.
