An '08 account of Jilayne's quest for long hair
Aug 14th, 2008 at 3:39pm

Okay, I've decided to start a hair journal. I don't know if this is a good thing or not, because  I'm pretty sure it'll just start feeding an obsession for long hair. Undecided Well, I don't know if you could really call it an obsession, but i just really want to have long hair. Ever since i chopped off my hair to bob length in around June, (to make it all one length) I've really wanted to grow it out. I don't know, but with me, it's like i always want what i don't have.  Sad     Right now, my hair is about 11'' long and whats really wierd about it is  that it's longer in the back than in the front. It's on the borderline of hovering above my shoulders and actually touching them. The reason I chopped it off in June was because i was growing out these bangs that I absolutely *hated*. I wanted my hair to be all one length (or at least close to it), but right now my bags are about an inch shorter than the rest of my hair. YAY. I was reading some of the forums yesterday and one was about bangs evening out with the rest of your hair naturally once you start growing them. I am SO praying for that to happen. Smiley     Okay so anyway, if anyone even reads this, i'll fill you in on the details. The shampoo and conditioner I'm using right now is Herbal Essences Long Term Relationships. My short term hair goal is BSL, and my long term hair goal is waist length. I have no idea how long it will take for me to reach this. Luckily, my hair growspretty fast (almost an inch a month) CheesyI'll keep you posted on any new happenings with my hair! Grin

Hi, Jilayne  Smiley

Congrats on starting your hair journal.

All I can say is have patience, and I know that's a tall order.  Grin  But I grew out bangs and uneven hemlines many years ago. I've also grown my hair long from scratch. My first goal was 24" and I achieved it. My next goal was BSL and I achieved that too. Now, I'm at mid-back length, and girl, if I can do it, you definitely can! Probably much faster than I did.

Hang in there and good luck with your goals!

Thanks alot for the advice and encouragement, Angel Spun. Grin I'm really happy that there are great people like you and Sakina here on the forums, because sometimes I'm tempted to just quit trying to grow out my hair long and do something else with it. Right now I am SO glad I haven't. Smiley
By the way, It's great to hear about your succsessful time with growing your hair! Cheesy I'm sure it looks beautiful. What colour is it? My hair is dirty blonde, with natural light blond highlights.

Hi Jilayne, welcome to the world of journaling!
I am growing my hair out and I am only 5 1/2 inches, so I know all about feeling hopeless and wanting to do something else with your hair. Just hang in there and before you know it, you'll be at your first goal!

Hi everyone, thanks for the encouraging comments LivingandLovingx3! You gave some great advice. I hope you reach your hair goals very soon! Grin
I know hasn't even been a day yet since my last post, but i need to write something that i just discovered-I CAN PUT MY HAIR INTO BRAIDS!!- O my gosh am I ever happy. Right now I have them in two english braids that are (admittedly) not that long (barely touching my shoulders) but at least they are braids! Grin
Just about a half  an hour ago i  conditioned my hair, wrapped it in a towel and left it in for 10 minutes. My hair was wet from when I went swimming in the lake earlier, and so I bet that the natural water, not that shower tap water was good for it too.

-Thanks for the comments everyone! Cheesy

Mine's light brown with a distinct red shift (Celtic heritage). And it's in decent condition, but could certainly be better.  Undecided

Congrats on being able to braid.  Smiley

Hi everybody! Cheesy

Thanks for all of your awesome comments. I can't disagree with you girls, milestones are great! Grin Not much going on today, I didn't have anything to do so I decided to post. I went swimming again....which does bring me to a question: I live on the lake so I go swimming almost every day in the summer. Is this bad for my hair? Will it dry it out? Huh I've been wondering about that. But I do condition and deep condition my hair regularly, so I can't imagine It having too much of an adverse effect on my hair. I'm not really sure. But any comments you have or answers would be great! Smiley
Otherwise, nothing very eventful happend today. When I took my braids out, my hair was nice and crimped though, which I liked. Almost like when I had longer hair.... Undecided

Anyways, I'll keep you posted! Cheesy

Okay...I'm on the verge of finally biting the bullet and chopping my hair off almost an inch or more to be equal with the bangs that I'm currently growing out. Tongue I'm not sure wether or not this is a good idea, but frankly I'm just sick and tired of looking at them every day. i just want my hair to be all one length. If anybody reads this, please tell me what you think of it. I'll likely be going to the hair dressers today.  Undecided But in a way, I'm kind of happy that i'm doing it because now it will finally be all one length. its kind of a melancholy type thing. Right now my hair is almost to my shoulders so it will likely be just a little past my chin when I'm done with it. Oh, and by the way, I figure that after my haircut I won't be able to put my hair in braids to sleep with anymore, so does anyone have and suggestions on how to sleep with my hair when it is too short to put in braids? Maybe a high ponytail?

Anyways.. i'lll keep you posted Smiley

You could find a way to pin back the bangs so they are out of site, out of mind. From your shoulders to your chin seems more like 2-3 inches to me, and for most people that is half a years worth of growth. But it is all up to you, if your feel that you would be more inclined to grow your hair long if it was all one length then that's what you should do. I personally cut my hair at the start because I had a straight perm and my ends were still straight, but my new growth was curly, and I didn't want to fry my hair anymore by straightening. I read somewhere in a past posting about waiting two weeks before making a drastic change, if at the end of the two weeks you feel the same, then do it.

okay, so I realize that i've been slacking a bit in terms of the hair journal thing. So I'll catch up. I did indeed chop my hair off, which I am actually very happy about. ITS ALL THE SAME LENGTH!! boy was I ever getting tired of those stupid bangs. But anyway, ever since i've decided to go hard core in terms of taking good care of my hair (Like 2 months ago-which was when i decided to grow it out) I've noticed that my hair feels much softer, and shinier. It must be those gummy bear vitamins I've been taking. Grin lol. Oh, and about a week ago, I oiled my hair with EVOO for the first time (I'm just starting to get used to all these little abbreviations Grin) It felt good afterwards, but man, did it ever feel greasy while it was in. I'm pretty sure I added waaay too much. Those kind of things always happen to me.  Tongue Well thats basically it. oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure the "deep conditioner" that I've been using isn't even deep conditioner after all. I think it's just normal conditioner. duh! *hits herself on the head*. Well, I'm still gettting used to this whole thing, so how was I supposed to know that got2b "Deep rescue conditioner" from Wal-Mart Wasn't deep conditioner! It's got the words "deep" and "conditioner" right?! Tongue  Huh I'm so confused. I'll likely be making a trip to buy some sometime soon.

Anyways, I'll keep posting. Please reply and tell me what you think! Smiley

P.S.- I forgot to add this, but my hair is about 8 and a quarter inches long Cheesy

Smiley Okay so I finally bought real deep conditioner. It's called Pantene Pro-V nourishing hair mask.(I don't know if that names completly right but I'm too lazy to go check) Tongue Anyways, I tried it today and my hair is noticably shinier and softer. Thats all I had to say really because nothing else eventful happend. But I gotta go because I forgot to take my gummy bear vitamins Grin haha. How do they get those things to taste so exactly like gummy bears when they really are full of vitamins?? I guess I'll never know  Roll Eyes

I'll keep posting  but somebody please reply!! It's getting lonely over here!!

Hey, I use Pantene hair masks too.  Smiley  Good stuff, eh? The one I've been using all year is Pantene Restoratives Time Renewal Replenishing Mask. Is that what you're using? Or is it from the basic line?

Gummy vites are tasty.  My daughter called gummy bears 'vitamins' until she was four and I explained the difference to her...

I'm interrested in those pantene hair masks; I'll look for them next time I'm shopping.

Hi guys! Cheesy

Thanks for the replies! Right now, Angel Spun, I've been using the pantene nourishing moisture replenishing mask. It's really good. I almost bought that one that you were talking about but then decided to get this one. I don't know how to make  the name clickable like you did though, so you guys will have to search it on google or something. Tongue

Thanks AngelSpun. Smiley I am a bit technically challenged though, so i don't know if I really understand it. Embarrassed I think I get the idea, but what is a tag?? How do they work?    http://www.longlocks.com       Okay, I just tried it, but I don't know if it's clickable. So anyways, heres my entry for today. Not much has happend since I last posted, exept for in my last post i forgot to add that as well as buying the deep conditioner, I also bought herbal essences degunkify clarifying shampoo. I haven't used it yet. And by the way, something wierd is going on with my measuring system here.  Huh When I first measured my hair, after i cut it on August......18th?....16th? One of those two dates. When I first measured it, I got 8 and a quarter inches. Now I get 9!!!!! I mean, this is really wierd because when I first measured, I used a piece of string (sometimes I use string and sometimes I use a ruler) and now the string is too short for the rest of my hair, when it used to be the same length. Do you think there are problems with how i measure? How do you guys measure your hair? I think maybe I measured wrong the first time, but I was pretty sure I didn't.... anyways, i'll keep you posted Smiley

I use a measuring tape that I found in the sewing isle. It's made of a vinyl like material, and it is not stiff. I have to roll it up and keep something on it so it doesn't unroll on me.

Okay, so I just measured my hair, and tried to calculate how long it will take me to get ot my goal. It will take me at most, a year  to get to my short term length (BSL) and six and a half more inches of hair. From then on my long term goal length is waist length, which will need 13 more inches of hair (from where I am right now; a little longer than my chin). i don't know If i want to grow my hair out any longer, although it is fairly thick. So roughly calculating in my head, to reach my ultimate goal it will take me 2 years and three months (if my hair grows at about a half inch per month) YAY so when I'm about 15 and a half, I'll be at my goal! Grin how long will it take you girls and guys to reach your goals? Do you have any goals right now?

-I'll keep you posted!

You must take trims into account as well.  Wink

My current plan is to stay at BSL/midback for another year or so to grow out some damage. After that, it will probably take another year to reach waist length...in about 2010...which will be 10 years from the last time that it was waist length. But that's my ultimate goal. Just to get back to where I was.

Oh right, I forgot about trims.... Tongue

It sounds like you're almost there angel spun! HOORAY Grin

My hair has been growing about three quarters of an inch a month now, so what do you think an accurate amount of time would be, taking trims into acount? Would that add maybe a couple of months onto my time? or more? I know it depends on how much I get trimmed, but lets just say if I got a half inch trimmed every 3 or 4 months. I'm not really sure, cuz I've never grown my hair (or planned to grow it) this long before.

I think your calculations are a little off, hon.

You've said that your hair will be at BSL if it grows 6½ more inches. If your hair is 9" long now, that would put you at 15½". Nobody's hair is BSL at only 15½". That's barely shoulder length.
Most people reach BSL at around 25 - 25½". Waist length on most people is between 30 - 32".

If your hair is truly 9" now, it will probably take a bit longer than you thought to reach waist length.

Okay, I'm starting over. Smiley I just measured my hair again with my mom's sewing measuring tape. It's 8 and a half inches when left alone, but when it's wet or pulled down its 9. (measuring from the side of my head) I measured from the back of my head to BSL (and I even made sure to measure to the right point using that one chart in "growing with it") and it equalled 18 and a half inches. So you were right, I was a little off. But thats as thourough as I can get. I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything wrong that time. Maybe the measurements are just shorter because I'm only 13 and haven't grown to my full height yet? I dont know, just a guess. (I'm only 5 feet tall) Undecided
Anyways, thanks for your input! Grin

P.S.- In case your wondering, I also measured again with my mom's sewing measuring tape, and 15 inches from the side of my head is already armpit length. (Yes, I am a bit short for my age, but I know people who are shorter) Grin

From what I understand most of the measurements that are used here start measuring at the front hairline, in the middle of your forehead, go back over your head and down the length of your hair to the longest point.  Doing it that way, BSL is about 25 inches for me.  Smiley

I just remeasured the BSL thing, and it turns out that its actually 24 inches.
Embarrassed woopsie, my mistake. I would assume that the last half inch or inch that I'm lacking right now would be just because I'm not as tall, or something, is that right? Or maybe I'm just wierd that way. Wow, so this like turns everything upside down.... so to find out my real hair length , do I still have to measure from the middle of my forhead?  Do I always have to measure that way all the time now? Huh

right now I just measured my hair that way, to see how long it is, and It's 14  and a half inches.  HAHA! I have just magically gained 5 and a half inches in length in 5 minutes! Cheesy

Yeah, the measuring is a little confusing.  My dad sees me doing it and thinks I'm nuts because there's no way any strands of my hair are actually that long.  But I tell him that the more I measure this was the longer I feel like my hair is and the less I'll bother him about helping me measure and taking photos of it.  Grin

So not much going on here. Just checking in, updating, ya know. I've been trying to shampoo less and condition more, and so actually what i awas about to go do was a conditioner only wash.
Also, I think I'm going to do a hot oil treatment sometime this week. (and leave it in for longer than one minute, unlike what the  package says.) Yeah, a couple weeks ago I tried the vo5 hot oil treatment but only left in it for one minute because thats what it said to in the directions. It did absolutely nothing.
Callisto: I know, It's basically impossible to take a decent picture of the back of your head by yourself  ( for me anyway) unless your arms are like twice as long as they are usually.   GrinTongue lol.....the easier route than having super long arms would probably just be to have a wider zoom on your camera.....oh well.

Woohoo! Cheesy we are back on track!! Today I wanted to see what would happen if i tried out curls/intense waves  so I  got my mom to try and do 2 french braids with my hair that is now about an inch past my chin (when dry) and it actually worked!! i did it when wet so they it would be easier to braid, the curls would be more intense, and they would stay longer.  All of my hair can fit into it, though I have to admit that I am a little put to shame by the little teeny stubs sticking out the back of my head. She had to stop the braids at the nape of my neck because unfortunately, my hair isn't long enough. So anyways, I'll tell you guys how the curls turn out! Since my hair is all one length, hopefully I dont turn out looking like triangle head tomorrow. Oh well, thats what ponytails are for, right? Grin

P.S.- I forgot to ask, do you think that braiding my hair when wet will damage it? I'm not really sure of that one myself so I'd like to know your opinion!

Hair will stretch and break much easier when wet.

I found that Dutch braids were easier than French when my hair was short.

Okay so I know I havent written for a long time, but thats  because nothing much is going on lately with my hair and I dont think i am allowed to post everything about my life each day on the internet.  Anyways, I'm writing today because it has been exactly 2 months since I got the big cut to my chin! (Well, It looked like it was at my chin but really when it was wet it went a little past.) So i'll measure right now and....oh boohoo only 15". When I got it cut I measured 14 or 14.5 inches. I dont remember. Oh well. At least there was growth. So now I am going to try and post a picture of my hair as my avatar or maybe just post a picture. I'm not really sure how to do either.

Sure you are!  --Oh, wait.  Are you talking about LL site rules or the rules of your parental units?

By the way, is your name pronounced Jill-ay-nee?

Oh, I was talking about my parents. I'm only 13 so I dont think I would be allowed to post things about my life like I would in a normal diary, even though I know most of you  guys are probably really nice people and everything. But my parents dont know that.  Tongue
BTW, my name is pronounced Jill-ay-ne. You almost had it. The "e" isn't prounounced as if it was a double "e" though, or a "ie". Sometimes people call me that as a nickname, though.  Smiley.
