oiling your hair
Aug 16th, 2008 at 1:33pm

Hi everyone! Cheesy

I have never oiled my hair before. I would like to start, but I'm not really sure what I am supposed to use on it and how I am supposed to go about doing it. I have read some of the other posts on oil treatments, but I still have some questions. Is there a difference between normal oil treatments and hot oil treatments? What kind of oil am I supposed to use? How often am i supposed to do this, and how long do i leave the oil in for?

Any helpful comments would be very much appreciated! Grin

Hi!  Depending on what texture your hair is,is the amount of oil that you'll use.  If it is very dry,you might want to oil in the am and the pm.  Take no more than 4 drops in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together.  Run your hands down the length of your hair, especially on the ends.  Viola!  You've oiled your hair!
You can experiment with the oils to see what your hair likes.  Try Jojoba oil,Sweet Almond oil,Olive oil(if you've got dry hair)Your hair will let you know what it likes and doesn't.
The hot oil treatments can be done weekly. Read the directions on the box for guidelines.  There are many out there.  I've used VO5 hot oil treatment and it's ok.  I personally love Ojon Restorative Treatment.  It's expensive, but well worth it.  My hair drinks it up faster than I can put it on!  lol
See what you like and ask any questions!  Hope that helps!

If you're just oiling the ends of your hair because they look dry you leave it in just like any other kind of leave in. If you doing an intensive treatment you can leave it on, 30 mins, an hour, or even overnight it's up to you.

When I put gel in my wet hair, I add 4 drops of camellia oil.  Then, the on the second day I finger comb my curls, divide my hair in half and apply 2 drops per half to the ends and then the mid shaft from the ears down.  This stays in all day, and sometimes I'll oil the ends on the next day, too.  I wash my hair 2x a week.
Once every two weeks I go to my local salon and get a scalp massage w/sunflower oil.  I leave that on at least for an hour, or sometimes overnight.

Okay, I promise this is my last question about oiling. Do you put the oil on when your hair is wet or dry? Does it matter?

Thanks! Cheesy

Hair absorbs oil better if it's applied while hair is wet.

And Sakina and Angel Spun have just proven that it really comes down to which way you think you're hair likes it better. So I say try both and see what works for you.

I've just decided to add my question on to this post instead of starting a new one.

I've recently bought some hot oil treatment, and it says to only leave the oil on for "UP TO ONE MINUTE" i've tried that and i feel that it doesnt really do anything for my hair. How long do you ladies leave the oil treatments on for? Do you think it would matter if i disregard the directions and just leave it on for longer?

I've used those before. They didn't seem to do anything.  Tongue Perhaps it was because I only left them in for the minute.  Huh

I usually leave a hot oil treatment in for 15 - 20 minutes.  I takes me more than a minute to just get it applied to all of my hair!  Grin
