Well, I'm 13 right now and I used to wear scrunchies alot before my I chopped my hair off a couple weeks ago. Now it can't fit. I don't know if you'll find this a very useful post since its coming from a 13 year old, but I would just tell you to wear whatever you want in your hair because its nobody's buisness to care what you put in it. It's your hair not theirs. Anyway, thats my 2 cents. Good luck with the whole scrunchie thing!

I don't care!  But I wear the very finelly knitted, tiny ones in black now.  Mainly because my hair is still relatively short but they're also more discrete  I don't care what others think though.  The kind that had the fabric around them are still fine in my book.  Even if they're large and quite visible.  I used to use them as bun covers when my hair was longer.  My MIL uses them over her buns with metal pins, clips etc. because I can't make her understand it's bad for her hair, but I haven't seen other women over 70 who wear any kind of scrunchie.

I just image googled scrunchie and I due to ignorance I've been abusing the word scrunchie.  Sorry!

What I use today I guess should be defined as slim, black, jersey hair elastics.  You can buy them in other colors including neutral sand and browns, sizes and widths too if that's your thing.  

I find the jersey elastics to be the gentlest on my hair and the ones that stay in place the best.  They loose their shape fast but they're cheap so it doesn't matter that much.  

Has anyone tried to knit or sew their own scrunchies?

While googling I saw many cute homemade scrunchies, both sewn and knitted and I actually think they're really cute and I see no reason why an adult can't use them.  Even though I can't knit or sew, I'm all for people showing off their craft skills and individuality.

I am 23 and I love scrunchies. I don't may much attention to the media in terms of what is fashonable and what is not. I am not one to let a magazine or the like determine what I can wear. Honestly, the decision is up to you. If you like them and want to wear them, then wear them. Everyone has a different style so what you like may not be what someone else likes and vise-versa.

I only have one of those original fabric covered scrunchies left.  It's a strange shade of dusty blue velvet but it's great for ending off buns and leaving my hair like that for most of the day. Keeps my hair off my face aside from face framing tendrils and neck and looking tidy throughout the day.   Then at the end of the day when hub gets home I have these lovely deep waves.  Very romantic if you're sitting down for a dim lit dinner.

I also pull my hair through the scrunchy when it's in a ponytail the way you used to do with those plastic things with a loop on it.  I use a small, thick, black knit "scrunchy" and the scrunchy is pretty much hidden by my hair.  I tried this before I had my hair cut into a bob two years ago but I was using a hair elastic that was too thin and made it too hard to pull my hair through.  You could keep pulling your hair through the middle of your ponytail and then pin or use a clip/comb on the ends to create a bun or rolled effect.

Drear, I have never, personally, ever had a scrunchie stay put in a ponytail.
The only time I've managed it is if I wound it up so tight, it'd pull on my hair and give me headaches. Oh, and it'd be so scrunched up it wouldn't even look like a scrunchie. If I wanted to use a scrunchie, I'd use it decoratively, over a smaller utilitarian hair tie.

I've never had a scrunchie work as a bun holder either. Without pins, my hair falls out. With pins, the scrunchie tries to slip behind the bun in the areas without pins, and starts looking weird.

I'm probably just inept. 

Where did you find the smaller scrunchies? I am finding that my hair is starting to be damaged from regular hair ties, but I really don't like the large fabric scrunchies, they look ridiculous (in my opinion). But I can't seem to find any smaller fabric hair ties anywhere.

Thanks I bought some cloth headbands today, and they are small enough to double up and then use as hair ties. They don't have much staying power, so I definitely won't be able to use them when I run or dance, but for around the house chores and every day stuff, it should be enough to keep my hair out of my face if I do choose!
