Vinegar rinses
Aug 23rd, 2008 at 6:34pm

I've never done a vinegar rinse.  I may try it soon.  I've noticed that many in here use Apple Cider Vinegar.  I'm wondering about other types.  My mother says that a vinegar rinse will bring out red highlights.  That would be okay...(this is me being skeptical:  Huh)

What about red wine vinegar?  Might turn hair purple...

Balsamic vinegar?   Euch...would I smell like a salad?

The most popular used is apple cider vinegar and white vinegar. I mix 1/3 cup vinegar and 1 quart water. I have been using apple cider vinegar, and I put it in a squeeze bottle to keep in the shower. I plan on trying white vinegar soemtime.

White vinegar works best for my hair.  It gives more shine and conditions too.

Apple cider vinegar is good for dry hair/scalp and white vinegar is good for oily scalp.

The only 2 types of vinegar that I've tried are apple cider vinegar and distilled white vinegar. There's no real difference between the 2, but I prefer the latter. I use an empty 1L sized Fiji water bottle and fill to the line on the bottom with DWV, then fill the rest of the bottle with purified water. Then I shake the bejeezes out of it (screwing the cap on tightly beforehand, of course) to mix. Voilą.

Vinegar rinses are very diluted (ie. mostly water) and will not turn your hair funky colors. All it does is remove buildup. With proper rinsing afterwards, your hair will not smell like vinegar. Though I usually do an extra clarifying wash after a vinegar rinse just for a little extra insurance.  Wink

You'll have to toy around with different vinegar solutions to find the one that best works for you.

I thought the color and smell thing wouldn't be an issue with a dilute rinse, I was just making fun. Grin  My mom has some silly ideas, sometimes.

I tried it yesterday and ended up with a bunch of frizzies atop my head.  I conditioned the length afterward and no frizzies there, just on top.  Maybe i don't need it, or maybe I need to dilute it a bit more.  Or maybe a clarifying conditioner all over, after.  So many things to try...

I've used both apple cider and distilled white vinegars.  I use white because it's the cheaper of the two.   Smiley  Re: the frizzies--what ratio of vinegar to water did you use?  My hair is a medium length right now, around 21/22 inches (i think) and I use 1/2 cup of vinegar to 2 cups of water.

I used 1/4 cup to a liter of water, so way less than that.  I used to have major frizzies all the time before I switched to Pantene.  Before that I used whatever was cheapest or on hand.
