I think I shed year round too.  At least, I don't notice shedding any more or less at any particular time of the year.

My hairdresser says it's normal to lose about 10-12 hairs/day and it is normal to shed in the summer.  We had a very chilly early summer; it didn't get really warm until July, so shedding in late summer wouldn't be unexpected.

I've always been accused of being a major shedder.  The reason why my dad preferred my hair short which makes no sense to me as length shouldn't have any influence on how much hair you shed though some say that the longer your hair, the fewer hairs you actually shed.  I'm just finding that hair cut and length makes no difference to me.  My hairs are dark and the diameter is wide so perhaps that's why it appears as if I lose more hairs than fx. hub who has short, fine, blond hairs?

I thought 50+ hairs was normal.  I think I lose more than 12 hairs a day yet I don't experience any thinning and my hair amount is already sparse so I would notice if there was a sudden thinning.  So I think I'm a year round shedder too.

I wouldn't think the length of hair would make a difference as to quantity of shedding either.  Maybe if the hair is short, it's not as noticeable when it does shed, thereby creating an illusion of less shedding?

Yeah, I think I lose way more hair than 10-12 a day too.  I lose probably twice that much in the shower every morning!  At least it seems that way when I'm picking it out of the drain!  Smiley  Then I lose more in my towel, and when I comb it, and throughout the day.  I have always shed a lot of hair like that.

Well, this may or may not help, but I used to be a dog groomer, and (bear with me here) we used to have people bring in their Labrador Retrievers all the time to get them clipped with a 10-blade (almost down to the skin).  When I asked the vet tech about this, saying that it seemed silly to clip a short-haired dog, she told me that they shed less when you clip them.  When I looked at her like she was silly, she clarified, saying that it seems like they shed less because the hair shaft length is much shorter.

I've read in numerous places, though, that it's normal to shed 50-100 hairs daily.  Also, with long hair I've found that it looks like you've shed more hairs than you have because the hair is all coiled up and bent around.  I used to think I lost at least 100 hairs a day, but when I took the time to count, found that it was in fact closer to 50.

This will (with your identity anonymous) be copied and pasted to my dad if he ever brings up the shedding topic again! Wink  I actually think he can understand it better if explained in comparison to dogs.
