Swimming and hair care
Feb 1st, 2009 at 6:26pm

I know that this has been discussed before but when I use the search feature it isn't coming up.

I'm pregnant (yay!) and will be swimming quite a bit in the coming months. My routine right now is to saturate my hair with regular water, then smooth some coconut oil around my hairline and a bit through the length, bun it and put my swim cap on.  Then rinse again when I am out of the pool.  When I am at home again I wash my hair like normal, right now I have a cheapy suave shampoo, and organix shea butter conditioner.  I run a small amount of shampoo through the length, and do a vinegar rinse between shampoo and conditioner.

So what works best for everyone out there?  Do I need to buy a swimmers shampoo, and either way should I be shampooing the length?  I hate to do it, but at the same time I don't want any chlorine build up.

Congrats on your pregnancy!!
I think the most important thing you could do,you ae doing already.  Wet your hair before getting into the pool.  I'm kinda torn being the shampooing the length lightly and not at all.  In my opinion,I'd wash the scalp, condition from the roots to the ends.

Happy pregnancy!!!  Cheesy

Swimming is an EXCELLENT exercise during pregnancy.  Keep it up!  During my only full term pregnancy, I swam over 100 miles.  (Funniest thing - my son is an excellent swimmer!).  I swam up until 2 days before I delivered.  At the end I looked like a beached whale in the water, but it felt great to swim (and I was so boyant, I couldn't sink if I tried).

Your hair routine is a good one - I wouldn't change a thing.

Good luck!

That brought back memories for me!  When my mother was pregnant with me she swam until the day before I was born.   Maybe that's why when I was growing up you couldn't keep me out of the water!  In the 60's it was more common to swim at a young age so I was swimming on my own at 3.
Hope your baby loves the water as much as you do!!

Swimmer's shampoos are formulated to remove the chlorine (green) from hair and are usually very harsh. If your hair isn't turning green, you don't need it.

So long as you're rinsing your hair before and after swimming, and taking good care of it in between, you should be fine.

Also, remember that chlorinated water is much more drying than salt water. Light oiling is fine, but don't be tempted to overload your hair with gunk, mmmkay? Mmmkay. And you seem to be happy with your pregnancy, so congrats. Smiley

Thank you ladies for the advice and congrats!

I'm still torn on whether to wash the length.  Its been feeling dry lately, but I don't think I will realize the chlorine damage until it is too late.  I think I'll get the suave clarifying conditioner and wash the length with that and hope for the best.

Congratulations!!!!!

You might need to add some deep conditioning treatments weekly or every 2 weeks.
