Fish oil and surgery?
Jun 25th, 2009 at 6:26am

I can't remember where I read it or in which context or maybe it was something someone said on a documentary about cosmetic surgery but they warned patients for cosmetic surgery to stop taking fish oil supplements before cosmetic surgery.

I usually take 3 fish oil capsules a day, not just for my hair but also for my skin.  It really has cut down on the rashes and what have you not...Do I stop taking the fish oil capsules and why?  How long before I have surgery to have my tonsils removed should I stop taking fish oil supplements?  Oh, my poor skin. Sad

Did you get an opinion from your doctor about stopping the fish oil?  If he or she says don't change anything, then why fix it if it's not broken?

Fish oil is a natural blood thinner.  Read here:
http://www.healthy-heart-guide.com/natural-blood-thinners.html

Here's another interesting read:
http://www.ctds.info/natthinners.html

I would discontinue use of the fish oil for at least one week prior to surgery.  Doctors don't always take natural remedies into consideration when asking for patient history; they generally focus on prescription meds.

Curlgirl, I wish I thought of asking when I had the chance.  See, I was asked about prescription medication and it was only after I got home I remembered hearing/or reading about the fish oil part.  I've tried to call and ask but the line's always busy.

Thanks for the links Trisha.  I'll check them out.

Because most mainstream doctors refuse to recognize supplements as being "valid".  I guess they think if they ignore the supplements then they don't really exist.   Grin

So by ignoring supplements possible positive effects, they also ignore the possible negative effects supplements may have on surgery??? Roll Eyes

I had a dental implant in Jan, and the orthodontist told me to stop taking the fish oil 3 days before the surgery and to stay off it at least 4 days after.

She did ask what supplements I was taking, and so does my doctor before she prescribes anything.  That is, my dr. did.  Just got a letter that she has left the group and my file has been assigned to someone else.  At least it is a woman, but I had really good relation ship with my previous dr, and hate the thought of breaking in a new one.  Angry

I fully understand that.  We can choose anyone in our local dr. house but most people have a favorite one.  Luckily, we can now book our appts. online so we no longer need to beg and plead for our favorite one.

Okay, then I'll continue with the supplements a little while yet.
