It is a modern invention.  England in 16C was in the grip of a minor Ice Age, and the Thames even froze solid one winter, so the ladies then had no need of bodice coolers.  I don't know who came up with idea.  I have one in blown glass in shades of red, pink and purple, and the new one will be hand-thrown pottery in shades of blue and green.  Mike told me last weekend that his daughter came into his studio and asked him why he was making pottery penises.   Grin

Just got up from a nap.  Have had a raging sore throat since Mon am.  It may or may not be followed by a head cold, depending on which version of the virus I got.  Between teaching summer school and going to Bristol every weekend, I had no chance of escaping this.  My husband says it is going around at work.  Was really bad on Mon and Tues, had to take aspirin every 4 hrs so I could swallow.  The soreness started subsiding yesterday and I hope will be gone tomorrow.  Have been feeling more and more tired as the week went on, so gave in and went to bed at 3:30.  If the doorbell hadn't rung, I would still be asleep.

Since I have been rinsing and conditioning daily, my hair has been calmer, despite the humidity.  I guess that was the key.  I am using a bodifying conditioner, which leaves my hair full, and not greasy.  I am still concerned about the no growth, but will discipline myself not to measure again at least until September.  On good note, the shedding is slowing down and almost stopped.

On rereading this, I am really obsessing about my hair.

Okay, I caved and measured.  Still at 23".  Arrgh!!!  But my hair is behaving better now that I am rinsing and conditioning every day.  Still have some breakage, but the shedding seems to have slowed down.  If it isn't measurably better next week,  I will do a mayonnaise treatment.

Have been franticly busy.  This is the last week of the class I am teaching now.  So have speeches and finals to grade and all the paperwork from the one student who waited until the last minute to turn in everything.  I will not give him full credit, so I don't know if he will pass or not.  He needs to learn the lesson that things are due when they are due, but if I fail him, he might be in my fall class again.   Undecided  Hmmm.....I will just add the numbers and see where he falls.

Bristol was pretty nice last weekend -- good weather, but I still had the sore throat on Sat.  Finally it went away Sun, which was good because we were very busy.  It was the first good sales day we have had this season.

Have not been happy with my garb.  Working in the store, I don't get a chance to wear my Court garb, and haven't been really pleased with my merchant garb.  Figured out on the way home Sun nite that it's because I don't like tucking up my overskirt.   Eureka!!  So will put center slits in all the overskirts and things should be good again.  Read in someone's blog that she puts her underskirts on grosgrain ribbon waistbands to reduce the bulk.  That sounds like a really good idea, so will try that.  I  didn't do it before because I switched skirts a lot, but have been making some skirts specifically for underskirts, so it would work for those.  Have also decided to redo the sleeves on the chemises I made.  I just put elastic in the wrists, but found some really good lace that looks handmade so will move the elastic up 1" and sew the lace on the ruffles.   I always have to wear things a few times before I know if they are comfortable and if I like them.

Okay.  Grading is all done.  (Large sigh of relief.)  In a class of 21, 7 A's, 9 B's, and 2 C's.  I can never remember whether plural letters take the apostrophe before the "s", but it looks right, so I'll go with it.

Now I can sew!!  Grin  Last nite put center slits in all my merchant skirts.  Bound the edges with double-fold bias tape to stiffen them and give them some weight.  Also am replacing the waistbands on my underskirts with grosgrain ribbon.  Did 2 of them and they are so much more comfortable.

Had an appointment with my stylist tonite, but her boy is in the hospital, so put it off 'til next week.  Since my hair isn't growing anyway, it isn't like I need color or a trim.  Asked the other stylist about that and she said that it often happens in the summer, and is often the result of a change in medication or diet.  Now that I think about it, I always lose my appetite in the summer, and haven't been eating as much, so I hope that is the cause.

Hmmm....does that mean that I have to choose between being slim and having good hair???  Bummer.  Undecided

That's a tough one. Undecided  But if you're only having problems in the summer, I wouldn't worry about it. Smiley

.

I find that to be a difficult balance too.  I don't have an answer.  My hair's in better condition than it's been for a long while but I've also gained a few unwanted lbs.  I'm trying to tell myself that if I eat healthy and varied and just the amount of food someone of my height and built needs to stay within a healthy weight range, then I shouldn't worry about not getting enough of something.

Got beck from Bristol this am.  The weather was awful.  Woke up Sat am to pouring rain, fortunately I had packed a big plastic dry-cleaning bag, so put all my garb in that, my hat in another plastic bag, put on my boots and went in in mundane clothes.  The humidity was at least 100%.  It rained all morning, then the sun came out and the heat and humidity went to the moon.  Temps in the high 80's with 95% humidity.  By the time I got back to the hotel, all I could think of was a cold shower.  I mean a COLD shower.

Sun was no better.  I started the day not feeling well from the day before.  It was unbearable well before noon.  Temps in the high 80's with high humidity and a strong south wind that was scorching.  I got a big dill pickle about 11am and ate that to make sure my blood chemistry stayed normal.   Later in the pm I went to the Friends of Faire garden to use the privy, get ice for my bodice chiller and some Gatorade.  Sat down with a friend who said I didn't look good at all (didn't feel good, either), so she fanned me for 10 min. while I drank the Gatorade.   Rain was  threatening, and we had a downpour later while I was out of the shop on a shopping break, so took refuge in the FoF garden just in time.  Thought I was going to be sick or pass out before the day was thru.

When I got back to the hotel and undressed, discovered I had a bad heat rash around my waist and "down south."  I could barely walk.  Was exhausted.  Took a cool shower, annointed my rash with vitamin E cream, then called my husband to tell him I wouldn't be home until this am.  Was just too tired to do the 2-hr drive.  Not to mention that the only clothing that didn't hurt was my nightgown and I wasn't really enthusiastic about driving home in that.  About 10pm there was another storm.  I could not have driven in that without being in danger of wrecking the car.

I hope next weekend is better.   Since we have had such a cool summer, this sudden heat was really dangerous.   I saw the medics take several people off-site in their little medical cart

Shockedbe careful with that humidity and heat!!  It's no joke!  Can you wear one of the neck cooling bandanas?  The coolness is right on the carotid arteries so it helps tremendously.  You can make your own, too.  The cooling gels cn be found in a nursery, you just add one teaspoon to the bandana before you sew it up.  Too much and your seams will rip open from the expansion of the gel crystals.  There is a pattern and info at Sewing.com for all info on it.  If ya can't find it,p/m me and I'll help look.

Thank you both.  It was the first bad weekend and, I hope, the only one.  We usually get just one really hot weekend, and coming after a very cool summer, it really hit some people hard.

A bodice chiller lowers your core temperature about 10 degrees, as long as it is kept full of ice.  The big dill pickles fix your blood chemistry by resupplying potassion and sodium you lose in sweating, as well as liquid.  Staying hydrated and not drinking anything alcoholic is another tactic for avoiding heat stroke.  I could stay in the shade, altho' it was hot in the shop with the lights on the jewelry.  We did keep them turned off most of the day to keep the temperature down.  I used my pewter mug, so when filled with ice and placed against my wrists and temples, it really helped cool me down.  We do have electric fans running to keep the air moving, which helps.

Next weekend is supposed to be better.
