Armadillo Angst

Apparently a few models are abdicating the Alexander McQueen throne and are refusing to walk the catwalk in his treacherous armadillo shoes, and McQueen is declaring “Off with their heads!” in return.  I mean really, who can blame them?  Not only are they dangerous, they gotta weigh more than the models who are expected to wear ‘em.

  • And they’re also kinda ugly.

Another thought; Looking at the shoe, it looks almost like your foot is in the same position as a ballet dancer’s in toe-shoes.

Ballet dancers who wear toe-shoes often do not have pretty feet. There is a reason why they never go barefoot. I would assume models must keep their feet in good condition.

That’s what I think! While they look like you’re walking en pointe from the front, from the sides they just look like you have horribly deformed feet. I tried briefly to find a pic of the interior of the shoe but was unsuccessful. After studying the exterior pic for awhile, I’ve come to the conclusion that there is probably about a 3 or 4″ platform in the bottom and your toes actually sit at the widest point in the shoe. I’m just guessin’ tho.

  • Another thing I don’t like about this platform shoe; If I trip and fall, my foot is caught in the shoe.

Platform shoes should allow your foot to fall free of the shoe in case you fall or trip. I remember reading something by some doctors where the doctors said that was how most injuries from platform or high heel shoes can be prevented. If your foot cannot fall free of the shoe, then the injury happens.

Those sea monster platform shoes he had I liked better. Those looked as if your foot can come out if you trip. This one your foot is pretty well stuck in the shoe. Don’t blame the models for not wanting to wear them.

Yeah, I don’t blame ‘em either. Walking the catwalk is tough enough without exceedingly dangerous shoes. I was a teenager in the 70s, I wore outrageously high platforms, I *know* how tricky even they can be and remember the uproar about people breaking ankles. Considering the tremendous buzz McQueen has gotten over these shoes, I’m sure he’s much more concerned about keeping that alive than he is about any potential danger to his models. Integrity in the fashion world has never been known to run rampant.

  • Lady gaga’s shoes, so strange and ugly, but very noticeable. I am sure i can’t accept it but appreciate someone who wear it ex Lady Gaga.

  • [...] of Noritaka Tatehana‘s heelless shoes (detail above).  If you thought her Alexander McQueen armadillo shoes looked dangerous, you ain’t seen nothing yet!  Gaga has already been caught on camera [...]

How She Rolls
Susan Maxwell Schmidt is the internationally-collected jewelry artist behind LongLocks HairSticks. Her designs have appeared in Demetrios Bridal's "For the Bride" magazine and "Upscale Magazine." The LongLocks HairSticks Boutique was Lucky Magazine's top pick for Best Hair Web Site in their May 2009 issue.

Though a native New Yorker, Ms. Schmidt currently resides in the fashion non capitol of the world–East Nottingham, PA–where the Amish are the fashion trendsetters and John Deere green appears in the color forecast every season.

Ms. Schmidt enjoys driving fast, annoying her husband, sleeping late and disturbing the neighbors. She also fancies herself a fashionista, though this is likely nothing more than a rather sad delusion on her part. It’s best just to play along.
