Art Appreciation 101: Haute Couture

Abe Gurko of the Huffington Post certainly doesn’t understand Haute Couture and its value as artistic expression. After reading this article I was inclined to leave a comment, which I thought I’d also share here to help out those who just don’t “get it.”

“Haute Couture is the art of fashion, not the function. Few wear Haute Couture, even among those who can afford it… it influences fashion trends rather than defining them. Just as you don’t need to own a Picasso to admire Picasso’s art, neither do you need to own a Dior gown to admire Galliano’s art. Art can be defined in many ways and exists in many forms, and each has its own intrinsic value as “art,” whether it be created from metal, the written word, oil paint or textiles. Those who choose to live their life without appreciating art in all its many manifestations deny themselves a very large part of the simple enjoyment of living.”

Talent in Da House!

Got talent?  Just about *any* type or level of talent?  If so, have I got the website for you!

Talenthouse is a creative collaborative that gives artists of all types and levels of accomplishment the chance to be recognized and receive compensation for their work.  They provide a variety of “creative invites” from which to choose… currently everything from designing a t-shirt for a rock band, to writing a horror short story, to composing a symphony for the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.  The winning submissions stand to earn everything from concert tickets to $6,500.  What a wonderfully imaginative way to provide great opportunities for artists, from amateur to professional!  Love it, love it, love it!

OK, I am DYIN’ here! :’D

regretsy OK, I am DYIN here! :D

Regretsy.  Where bad Etsy crafters go to die.

Be forewarned… if it’s on Etsy and is offensive, ugly or smutty, Regretsy *will* find it and possibly make it even worse.  Love that!

I wonder if Helen Thomas has been clued in on this yet :x

No, seriously… this might be almost as insanely funny as Cake Wrecks.

How She Rolls
Susan Maxwell Schmidt is the internationally-collected jewelry artist behind LongLocks HairSticks. Her designs have appeared in Demetrios Bridal's "For the Bride" magazine and "Upscale Magazine." The LongLocks HairSticks Boutique was Lucky Magazine's top pick for Best Hair Web Site in their May 2009 issue.

Though a native New Yorker, Ms. Schmidt currently resides in the fashion non capitol of the world–East Nottingham, PA–where the Amish are the fashion trendsetters and John Deere green appears in the color forecast every season.

Ms. Schmidt enjoys driving fast, annoying her husband, sleeping late and disturbing the neighbors. She also fancies herself a fashionista, though this is likely nothing more than a rather sad delusion on her part. It’s best just to play along.
