suggestions?
Aug 9th, 2004 at 1:35pm

So, my hair is currently in a very, very short, styled, layered, slightly butch-looking cut after I hacked off a perm gone bad.  Roll Eyes

I've never gone from this short before and I was wondering what I should do with my hair as I grow it through the short stage...once I get down to shoulder length and longer I can just do a blunt cut and be done with it, but until then...right now it's cut in a way that I know as soon as it starts to grow out it's going to look shaggy and the temptation will be to just keep cutting it right back into the cut I have now just to keep it looking neat!

...but that basically defeats the purpose.

How can I get my hair through the in-between stage from super-short to shoulder length without just looking shaggy for a year? Ideas?

Would it be possible, as your hair grows, to get it to
morph into a chin length bob- all one length, and then
grow it straight down from there?  My hair was short and blunt in the back and layered in the front a year
ago and thats what I did.

I doubt I could get it to "morph" without a few trims...the stylist layered it all around to make it look as cute as possible because I was slightly traumatized about having to hack ALL of it off...so it's basically layered all over every inch of my head!

What I'm wondering is, once it starts growing out and I go for my next trim, what, exactly, to ask for! Because it will be a shaggy mess, I'm pretty sure, but I'll only want to get half an inch off! Will I be able to do that without simply getting a shaggy mess half an inch shorter?   Tongue

I suppose these stylists know what they're doing, that IS what we pay them for. Here's crossing my fingers and hoping I can communicate to whoever does my next trim that I ONLY WANT HALF AN INCH OFF because I'm trying to grow it out...I don't want it chopped right back into the butch look I started out with.

At any rate, I'm definitely going to get it bobbed or blunt cut as soon as it's long enough so I don't have to deal with the royal pain of layers growing out! But right now it's layered everywhere, and very short.

I understand your issues.  I grew my hair out from a VERY short cut (less than 1 inch all over).  I have done this kind of grow out a couple of times.  I usually just try to go an extra week or two between my trims; telling the stylist each time that I am trying to grow out my hair to a single length.  This usually gives them the clue to trim the back more than the top or sides.  It is awkward for a while, but it is worth it.

Now is also a good time to decide if you want bangs/fringe or not.  It is much easier to grow them out with the rest of your hair, rather than later.

Good luck!

There's your problem: assuming that any given stylist
    1.) knows what they're doing,
2.) that this has anything to do with what you told them to do, and
3.) that they care in the slightest about helping you achieve your long-term hair goals.
Stylists consider their main purpose is to make you look as beautiful as possible right now.

This has the potential to be a big stumbling block on your journey to long hair.

There are going to be long periods of awkwardness in growing out short hair, and thanks to the layers that were meant to ease your discomfort, this awkward time of growing-out will last even longer.

I recommend headbands, barettes and other clips, scarves, and for really bad hair weeks, a wig. Perhaps even a long wig, to remind you about why you're growing out your hair.

And when you go to a stylist to get the bottom trimmed, don't let them talk you into doing anything at all to the top. No layers, no nothing. Walk in, describe to them the cut you want, and make sure they know that it's the only thing you're willing to pay for.

Hmmmmmmm.

Would it be possible to just follow the half-inch rule? Like, wait three or four months and then go get a half-inch trimmed off all around...wait three or four more months and do the same? Would that look decent? I mean, obviously I want to get it all to one length eventually, but do I need to do it right now?

I guess the problem with asking for a little bit off all around is that they might cut it as short as it started. So I suppose the safe thing to do really IS ask them to only cut the bottom.

This will be interesting. I have no concept of how to handle hair this short. Time to get lots of scarves to cover my head.  Tongue

Oh no, I'm sorry, of course I meant that yes, it would
require some trims to go from what you have now to
a bob shape.   I agree with bikerbraid and ekatherine
to be very explicit in explaining to the stylist just what
your goal is.
You have one great advantage that I didn't have- You're
starting with healthy hair!!   That should be a big advantage to keeping it looking better during the awkward stages, between trims.

Another question...

About the suggestion for clips and barrettes, which I will probably need within the next few months when these bangs start hanging in my eyes...what kinds of clips/barettes will be nice to my hair? I have very fine, slippery hair and it doesn't hold clips very well...when it was longer I used to stuff as much hair as possible into one clip and then ended up pulling my hair really tight through the clip when I fastened it and pulling strands out with the clips. I need a better kind of clip to hold my hair in place. Any thoughts from the fine-haired crowd?

Incidentally I have the same problem with headbands...they don't stay in place without half a bottle of hairspray and a few pins. So again...any suggestions would be nice.

When I get back to Florida next week (where I'm attending university) I'm going to hit a bunch of stores anyway to buy stuff for my room...so I figured I'd look for some hold-these-bangs-out-of-my-eyes accessories while I'm at it. I just need to know what to look for.

Barrettes and clips for fine hair are hard to find.  I've heard some people talking about a rubbery coated clip that would work well, but I've not seen them anywhere myself.

What to watch out for - anything that is sharp.  Many barrettes are metal with sharp edges.  These can be "softened" a bit with several coats of clear nail polish.  Also watch for springs or closures that will grab your hair and not let go.  I used to use these metal spring type clips that were great for holding my fine hair, but they had an overlapping joint on one end that would grab 2 or 3 hairs everytime.  I solved that with nailpolish as well.

Good luck on your search! (and good luck in school!)

my hair is fine and slippery too so i know what you mean!  like bikerbraid said, don't put stuff in your hair with teeth, but with thoose rubber thingy it often is sticky and breaks my hair.  my tip is to mix lemon juice and  aloe vera gel together and put it on the section of hair put then you do crossovers, um.

1-pull your bangs back
2-lightly put the mix in
3-take a bobby pin and insert it from the left (in a mirror)at an angle, to the right
4- do the same starting at the right
5- do the same as 3 except about a centimeter back
6-do the same as 4 like 5
7- kept srossing the pins until you get to the back of your bangs then mist with a light hairspray

Thanks for the suggestions!

I've never seen clips or barrettes with rubber, either, I'll have to look.

That crossover thing sounds a little complicated but I think I get the basic idea. I may post a pic of it when I try it and ask you if I'm doing it right, if that's OK...heheh...but then what do you do, just leave it like that or cover it up with a headband or what?

I'll be doing some definite experimenting next week. Whooo hooo!

I'm in the same boat, Ella - my hair is still above shoulder length. Today it went super-curly so it's only to the middle of my neck. It's taking FOREVER to grow!  Roll Eyes

My hair is pretty uneven too. I have only just recently been able to put it up in a ponytail - before that I did one of the following:
  • Half-updo, using a clip (but in your case it would have to be a rubber-backed clip, you could make your own using rubber caulking used for e.g. aquariums)
  • Half-updo, French braid over the crown and then clipped. This is super easy and tames those shorter ends. Or you could put it all up in a French braid if you like that look.
  • Part your hair normally, then do a French braid on each side. Clip them together in the back or use a ponytail-holder if your hair is long enough. I do this a lot, my sides usually fall out of a regular ponytail.

How long is your hair?

Hahah...well, at the moment my hair is about 3 inches long. However, I will definitely keep your suggestions in mind for when it gets long enough to do something OTHER than comb it!   Grin   Thanks!

Right, I saw another of your posts somewhere else where you mention the 3".  Undecided But it's growing out healthily!!

Anyway, you might still be able to practice your French braiding on your hair. Have you tried Alice bands?
