Looking for shinier hair...
Dec 18th, 2008 at 7:53pm

Alrighty, so I have been a member for a while now, and I have been trying new things all the time to improve my hair, and while my hair's health has gotten so much better over the last 2 years, the shine and texture haven't improved, and it's getting me down!

I want my hair to be shiny and silky smooth like every other woman's hair I see!  I STILL can't wear my hair in a pony tail (and hardly ever down) because the texture is whispy, and almost coarse, and it knots up on itself at EVERY given opportunity.    I have no idea what else to try to get it shiny and silky smooth with hardly any knotting, it's really got me thinking of even *gasp* cutting it off! I mean it IS healthy, it's very soft, but it's sort of poofy and whispy and, man, it's so hard to describe.  It is the opposite of shiny and silky, but not ragged, does that make sense?

I stopped using all regular cosmetic things in my hair quite some time ago.  I rarely use a regular shampoo or conditioner anymore, and when I do wash my hair it's with a shampoo bar or mild shampoo & Cond. with no cones, and I oil it as often as needed (few times a week maybe).  I comb and brush regularly (and gently) and I have tried some hair treatments to make my hair soft and what not here and there, but nothing makes it shiny and silky and knot free!  AGHCJKAFH  it's so aggravating!  I hate when I see all these women doing god awful things to their hair on a daily basis and yet they still have shiny, silky, no-knot, gorgeous hair.  It makes me INSANE!

Has anyone ever found a way to go from dull, lack-luster, wispy hair, to shiny & silky smooth no-knot hair?  Is it possible?  I don't want to give up, I have had long hair my entire life, but if I can only ever wear it in buns, what's the point?  It's getting me down for sure!  HELP!

Dont worry.  Smiley I'm sure you'll find an answer soon. I do have a couple of suggestions, though.
1. You could start shampooing and conditioning with an all natural or organic products if that is why you discontinued with your other shampoos and conditioners. Ever since I started using these products called "Jason all natural, organinc and pure" my hair has felt alot softer and even a bit shinier too.
2. When you wash your hair with that soap bar, you could do a rinse in very cold water. This improves the shine of your hair. Not exactly sure to the details of why, but trust me, it does.
3. This one only works if you do number 1., too. Sorry. You could add a couple drops of honey to your conditioner every once in a while when you condition. This makes the hair alot shinier and softer. Well at least  it does for me.
I hope at least one of these things help! Good luck!  Cheesy

I rinse with cold water every once in a while, I also do ACV rinses.  Neither really helps with shine for me and especially not with being tangle free.

I was thinking of trying some organic shampoos, but I was giving the shampoo bar a good try first.  I don't care for the one I am using right now bc it makes my hair too dry without conditioner or oil.  I am going to try a shampoo bar for dry hair and if THAT doesn't work I might try that Jason's stuff, bc I have seen it mentioned in the threads before.

I have never put honey IN my conditioner, but I have read a lot about it.  I was also reading the forums at hennaforhair.com a bit ago and I read some people using Cassia for conditioning?  Has anyone used this just for conditioning before?  Their forums are sort of messy and it's impossible to track posts so I didn't bother posting about it over there.  If anyone HAS used it, how do you condition with it?

I also read a post about honey being used as a sort of mask, or deep conditioner.
The post said something about heating the honey up a tad, which apparently keeps honey from turning into peroxide or something!?  I have no idea, sounded funny, but I guess some people use honey to do a "honey lightening".  Well anyhow apparently you mix warmed honey with water and comb it into the hair and wrap your head and leave it for 1+ hour(s) then apply a little conditioner, then shampoo out, and it supposedly makes hair silky and shiny.

I have put honey in my hair before, but it's been a while and I forget how the results came out, but I may try it again and see.

Thanks for the suggestions!  Keep 'em coming!

Honey is a humectant - it will moisturize the hair.  You warm it so that it is liquid enough to work through your hair.

Hi Tara, there are some hair types which do not shne (reflect light).  Mine is one them. Yours could be too.  My hair is VERY coarse.  Cassia helps with this.  I have used it before and got shine.  It is messy but worth it.  I purchased mine at a health food store.  They called it neutral henna (no color).  Just mix with hot water, make a runny paste, I sectioned my hair for better coverage (thick hair), apply to roots first, then down length.  I put a plastic cover on, a towel on my neck, and sat under a warm hairdryer for about 30 minutes.  I then rinsed (outside) I didnt want to mess up the bathroom, and then washed it out, used conditoner, and airdried.  Viola!!  shiney hair.  I would contine to apply to grow out as necessary (about every 6 weeks).  It does condition and helps with smoothness isssues, BUT you cannot color over it. It is henna.  I get knots too, but with careful combing, I still wear braids and banded pony-tails.  I know my hair will never be the soft, shiney, lovely locks I have seen here and else where, but I am determined it will be the best it can be and I will love it.

If you decide to do cassia, overtime you find your hair may get stronger too!  That is a good thing.  Hope this helps.

Debr

I find that rinsing my hair in cold water after I condition helps my hair keep from frizzing and tangling, as well as making it shinier.  I think it's because it makes the cuticle lie flat so it reflects more light.
I have never really had much of a shine problem, though sometimes if my hair gets dried out quickly (in very hot, dry weather) it becomes courser and looses it's shine.  But all I need to do is a deep conditioning and it's fine.

Thanks for the Cassia tip, Debr!  I actually plan to dye my hair black very soon with henna and indigo, so I will hold off on trying the cassia because the henna and indigo might do the job as well.
