Questions for Bikerbraid
Jan 7th, 2009 at 11:18am

Hi Bikerbraid.  Just wondering if you have a recent length pic of your hair.  Also wondering if you comb or brush your hair.  Your hair seems to be a lot like mine.

I keep meaning to have hubby take a picture of my hair... I don't have any recent ones of it down.  Maybe this weekend... Undecided

I don't own a brush.  I only use wide tooth combs on my hair - either hand cut wood (Ric's) or bone.  These keep the static down, especially during the winter.  My hair is soooo fine it will break if you look at it wrong.

Our hair does look a lot alike!

That's how mine is.  So very fine!  And so tangly!  I hadn't been brushing or combing it for a long time.  I'm sure that's how I got it this long.  I have just started dong some brushing and combing because it was getting too tangly, and the dead hairs were not getting removed properly just with finger combing.  However, I'm afraid now of breaking it all off.  I try to be gentle, but it still breaks.

Hope you don't mind if I jump in here!  I had the same issue with just finger combing.  I got one of Ric's combs for Christmas and it really makes a difference-no more ends snapping from combing with a comb and I hardly loose any hair.

No, I don't mind.  Never heard of those combs.  Where do you get them?  What is special about them?

Thanks!

Thank you, Sakina.  Do you have that large long-handled one?

It would be nice if they weren't so expensive, but I suppose they last forever.

So what do you think makes it go through the hair without breaking it?

Hand cut/sawed combs don't have the seam on them that most commercially made combs have.  Those seams are like razors on your hair and eventually "shave" the hair to the point of breaking it.  A good wood comb should also be oiled or waxed to prevent the natural texture/grain of the wood from creating any friction on the hair.  And, since they are a natural material, they do not produce static like plastics do.

I have seen decent wood combs at Target (and I think someone said they saw them at Wal-mart too), that are very reasonably priced.  If I didn't already have 2 wood combs, I'd buy one of those.  I think the brand name was Goody, but I'm not 100% sure of that.  I do remember it was a brand I'd seen around a lot and was surprised to see they were into the wood combs and brushes.

Wood combs should not be used on wet hair, nor should a wood comb be allowed to stay wet.  Water will damage them.  I use mine in damp hair, but always dry the comb afterwards and I keep the comb oiled to minimize damage from my damp hair.

Well, I have a Mason Pearson seamless comb, and another seamless comb, and they both manage to get stuck in my hair.  I doubt a wooden one would be much different.  I just have the type of hair that just keeps tangling up.  It is like a spider web.

ok, running the risk of some people thinking I have totally gone to the dark side...... My very fine and extremely prone to tangles hair likes a bit of silicone, especially in the winter.  The coating adds weight to the hair as well as slip, both deterring the tangles.  You might try a leave-in or an anti-frizz serum to see if it works for you.  Just remember to clarify or use vinegar rinses to keep it from strangling the hair and making it brittle.

Actually, I do use cones.  I kind of trade off between cone and non-cone conditioners.  I still can't decide if I really need the cones, since I have a couple of other conditioners that seem just as good with the tangles.

So, Bikerbraid, do you comb your hair when it is wet or dry?

I use a very wide toothed seamless shower detangler as I am rinsing the conditioner from my hair, then I don't comb again until it is dry.  I comb my hair each morning and again at night with my wood or bone comb.  That's it.  I seldom comb my hair during they day because it is either up in a bun or braided.  On the rare occasion it is loose, I will finger comb it often to get rid of the tangles at my neck and the ends.
