Title: The Dutch Braid
Post by MurmuringMelodies on Sep 30th, 2006 at 11:33pm
Can anyone tell me how to braid a Dutch braid? I was on a website that gave instructions to dutch braid, I did not understand it. Can anyone give me step by step instructions? (I may need you to talk to me like I am four to understand it....  ;D  ::) )

A  Dutch braid is "raised" compared to a French braid.  The difference is, a French braid has you taking the section of hair OVER the next section, and a Dutch braid has you taking the section UNDER the next section.

Once you are no longer braiding the scalp hair and are just doing the loose hair, there is no difference in the appearance of the braid.

Check out the Hair Braiding Basics section of this site for more information.

Thanks! This is very helpful for me [smiley=thumbsup.gif]! I am pretty good at french braiding so this will be easier then I thought  8-). This is the website I orginally got the directions from:
http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/dutch.htm
It confused me so  [smiley=shocked.gif]...
Anyway thanks so much!

Dreamweaver's site is an excellent site to see lots of braiding options.  Their instructions are all for a braider doing someone elses hair and learning the techniques that professionals use when they are braiding many, many people's hair.  Those of us that just do our own hair, or maybe a child's hair, may find their techniques "more than we need to know".

If you can French braid your hair, you can do a Dutch braid.  I'll warn you though, your fingers will try to protest and not want to change their habits!  ;D

A dutch braid is my favorite for any kind of outdoor activity (especially hiking).  It is tighter and more efficient that a french braid for me.  I just have to keep telling myself "under, under" as I go.
