More advice needed
Jun 5th, 2003 at 11:03pm

First, I have to say how much you've all helped me in just the couple of days since I found this site. The information that you are sharing here is truly a God-send.

I have wavy/curly hair that is almost half way down my back. It's been coloured because I don't want to embrace my grey hair just yet. I want to see just how long my hair will grow. It doesn't grow very fast.

It's thick, but the strands are thin, and over the last year I've had to deal with losing hair every time I wash it. I never use a brush on it, and can only comb it when it's wet and coated with conditioner.

I also never use any heated appliances on it. However, this past Monday the hairstylist who coloured it just had to use not only a hood hairdryer (to quicken the dying process) but a blow dryer because she just couldn't stand to see anyone leave her salon with wet hair.  Why is it when I sit in a salon chair I suddenly lose my ability to speak my mind....  Undecided

What do you all do about tangles that happen throughout the day?

One of my continuing dilemmas is trying to figure what to do to "frame" my face. I had cut bangs about a year ago, and they've grown to almost jaw length.

Because I work outdoors I usually have to wear my hair pinned, either up, or at least off my face.

Are you able to wear your hair loose, or do you usually pin it in some way?

I feel like a kid in a candy shop here because for the first time there are people who know what it's like to have hair like mine.

Oh, so many questions....so little time.  Smiley

Thanks for letting me ramble.

Once in a while, it's ok to rough dry your hair... but when I usually go to salons, I tell the person at the very beginning that I would not like any heat to be used on my hair. *INSIST*  Tongue

I don't know why you don't comb/brush your hair? I brush it often throughout the day to smooth it and I never lose any hair.

If your hair is wavy/curly, you might benefit from www.naturallycurly.com! It's a nice site.

I live in quite a hot country, so most of the time I put my hair up, but I also wear it loose at home. If you just pin away the side sections it looks nice down and also stays out of your face.

Anyway, I'm glad you take so much pride in manitaining healthy hair! By the way, my dad wanted to name me Tallulah ... before they watched Star Wars!  Wink

I, too , have been losing a lot in the washing process. I think it's normal to lose 50 or more strands per day.(or am i wrong ?) I only see more because I have been combing the conditioner through. Before I guess it all went down the drain.(which explains why my drain doesn't clog anymore Roll Eyes ) I still seem to have a ton left on  my head,  so I don't worry too much.

I most often wear my hair pulled away from my face. Even if I leave it down in the back I clip it up(with hair friendly clips of course) and away from the front. It really gets in the way of gardening, cooking etc.  Sometimes I have tangles with the part I have left down so I use a spray detangler and gently work them out. Maybe oiling it would work, what do you guys think? I haven't tried oiling yet, so not sure?

I always had bangs too, but let them grown out. They are probably as long as yours, almost to my collar bone. I think I stopped worring about keeping the hair around my face when I welcomed my gray with open arms.  Grin WELCOME GRAY {{{{{hugs, hugs}}}} I wear my hair for me now, what pleases me.

I have been getting gray slowly for about 10 or so years and now have a lovely little temple streak that i wouldn't dream of covering. I love it. But then, in the beginning when people would point it out and say, "you are too young to be gray"  I almost felt as if I was supposed to not want them. Like I was supposed to rebel and buy into all the mags and commercials that say cover the gray. Me, gray, no way. There was a time, about 5 years ago, that i did cover it. My 17 y/o son, my ever present voice of wisdom, showed me the light. He really thinks my hair is great the way it is. So now I surround my self with people who support and love my gray too. So now,  I say yes way. All the way gray. But,  I am 40 so that makes a difference.  Sorry for the ramble.

Good luck Cheesy

Jenna

Hm,yes, hairstylists can be intimidating... Grin ,Iīm also one of those persons loosing speech in front of a hairdresser-thatīs why I havenīt been to one for almost 2 years now.(And enjoying it!)
I donīt have curls, but straight slippery hair, but what has helped me the most with tangles is...avoid getting them in the first place!Meaning I almost always wear my hair up and reserve letting it down for special events.
As for hair loss,I always recommend MSM(Methylsulfonylmethane),it has made an immense difference for me-I only loose about 2-3 individual hairs per day(even on a washing day),and it helps against joint pains too! Cheesy  I mostly brush my hair straight back, loosely,I donīt frame my face at all,I only use one or two hairclips in the temple area or do a sort of cornrow-style-where the hair is not braided but twisted.

Thanks for the replys ladies. Smiley

I'll definitely check out the suggested website.

As for brushing my hair, when it's dry I can barely get a brush through it, and brushing or combing when it's dry seems to pull the curl/wave out leaving the hair all bushy.  Then, if I don't pin my hair back I start to resemble "Cousin It" from The Adams Family.

Some people look amazing with grey hair. I just look frumpy, washed out and old.  My mother has had a streak of silver grey in her hair since she was 18.

Eventually I'll embrace my grey.

I've never heard of MSM.  Is this a supplement that can be taken orally, or is it something one adds to ones hair?  My brother has long spiral curls (oh, how I hate that!! Wink  ) is also losing hair as I am and if this product works we'll buy it!!!!

MSM is taken orally, you can either buy pure MSM capsules,or hair vitamins, which contain MSM among other ingredients.Like Ultra Hair Plus vitamins by Natureīs Plus, which I am taking at the moment.Hard to find where I live, but definately worth the trouble Smiley ! I can only speak from my experience of course, but MSM has really made a difference for me.And as far as I know itīs really safe,no known side effects(at least nothing was ever mentioned in all the articles Ėīve read about it Tongue)

Tallulah, about brushing your hair...

When it's longer, you shouldn't have the problem of it becoming big when you brush it. I also had this problem when my hair was shorter. Make sure you use a good conditioner so that you can finger comb your hair easily. How often do you wash it?

I wash it once a week, but I dampen it daily and use a hair pick to work out the tangles.

My hair grows so slowly that it's going to be years before it ever reaches my lower back. It was there once, but in a pique of snottiness I cut it almost to shoulder length. Immediately I regretted it, but the deed was done.

My curl easily turns to frizz, and as my hair gets longer, the curl tends to stay only on the ends. Maybe it's just that I haven't found the right conditioner or I'm just not doing what my hair want me to do.

Ever notice that your hair tends to take on an identity of its own as it gets longer?  My hair has a mind of its own and will do as it pleases, regardless of what I want it to do.

I am learning to listen to my hair. Wink

LOL!

My hair seems to be easier to manage when it's longer! But don't worry, it won't take long to figure out what your hair needs to keep it happy  Tongue
