Hot Rollers
Jun 13th, 2003 at 1:27am

I tend to stay away from any styling products, especially anything that uses heat, and I gave my blow dryer away last October. Yesterday, my little cousins wanted their hair curled. One has slightly wavy hair and one has hair that's curly (only she wanted it curled into ringlets rather than loose curls). Anyway, once before I tried small rollers (unheated) in the wavy hair and the mousse in the curly hair, and the mousse turned out fine but the wavy hair would not curl!! I was very annoyed... I had even tried rag curls but they didn't work either.

So I asked my mother, whose hair is stick straight, and who used to long for curls when she was young. She said she used to use hot rollers. I asked her if it would be bad to use it on their hair, and she said no, if it was just a once-in-a-lifetime thing. So I tried it, and it turned out WONDERFUL!! I didn't know how magical these rollers were  Tongue!

Now here's my question. I'd like to try using these rollers in my hair, because when I took them out, the girls' hair wasn't dry and didn't have any split ends. In fact it was just as soft as before I put the rollers in. So are these rollers extremely bad for the hair? Or are they only bad if you repeatedly use them? I think I'll have to ask my Mum to put my hair in rag curls again... the curls that you get from hot rollers are so tempting... want... curls...  Grin

Any heat used on hair has the potential for damaging the hair.  You don't mention what type of hot rollers you have, some can be more damaging than others.  It depends on the surface of the roller, the temperature that the roller gets to, and the general condition of your hair to begin with.  I have used hot rollers in my hair for special occassions and have not noticed any damage from the use.  I used hot rollers all the time while growing my hair out from a pixie cut to just past my shoulders - some of those ends have never been cut off and are now at my waist.

One thing to be careful about is getting the hair tangled around the roller making it next to impossible to get out.  Also, the type of device that is used to hold the roller in the hair can be the cause for damage as well.

To get the best curl from a hot roller, the hair should be dry, not damp or wet.  Leave the rollers in until they are cooled, carefully unroll the roller, then let the hair cool without the roller before combing, brushing or styling.

I used the rollers in the exact way that you described them. I think I might try using them - my hair is in excellent condition, the rollers don't heat up that much, and I use pins to hold them in place - but only for special occasions. Maybe on my birthday  Grin! I'm not sure whether the surface of my rollers are bad, they are kind of velvety... my mother used these every day of her life when her hair was shoulder length and experienced no damage at all.

I don't think anything is more beautiful than a head full of long, beautiful, unfrizzy curls!!

The type that I would be cautious of are the ones that have the "velcro" type hooks to hold the hair.  I have not seen these on the hot rollers in a long time, but I know they had been used.  They would advertise them as "self-holding" - "no pins needed".  If your hair wrapped around them more than once, you would end up with a tangled mess.  The velvety type should be OK.  Make sure the pins that you use to hold the rollers do not crimp the hair, causing it to break.  Since you've used the rollers on someone already, you probably already know that it would be important to make sure the hair is wrapped round the roller in a very smooth fashion.  You don't want crunchy looking ends on those gorgeous curls.  Grin
