dry hair with split ends
Mar 9th, 2004 at 7:03am

Hi guys
I am new here and i've tried to read a lot of posts to get aquinted with everything but it's hard to keep it all together  Undecided so i just thought i might ask you all some q'ns about my hair and see what you have to say Cheesy

Well here it goes, I have hair a little longer than pass shoulder blade, and its' FULL of split ends. It's really bad, i got highlights and it got worse. Last time i got highlights it didn't happen but then i coloured it darker and that's when the hell started. It's really dry, full of split ends and tangles all the time. If i don't use Infusium 23 live in conditioner ther's no way i can brush it after i wash them. And if i don't blow dry my hair afterwards i will have a BAD HAIR DAY, i mean it will be all over the place, won't be as shiny and will tangle every second. So in a way i have to blow dry to keep it healthy looking but it's not good for it. So i don't know what to do.
I use Fructis as my shampoo and conditioner, and that's about it.
I have to say my hair grows really fast, and it's really nice, i mean it looks very pretty when i style it, but it kills me to see it all full of split ends Sad. so i was just wondering what can i do to make them healthy again. And trimming them doesn't really help, cuz a few weeks later i've split ends all over again, well sometimes even the next day, i guess they can't take all of them off...so i just odn't know what to do to kepe them pretty and healthy. ANY suggestions will be HIGHLY appreciated Smiley

Thank you Cheesy

Welcome Trinity!
I'm sorry to hear that you are frustrated with the condition of your hair.   Sad  Hopefully you can pick up a few things here that will help you out.

First, I would suggest that you read through the Ultimate Guide to Growing Long Hair (it is a link on the left hand side of the screen at this site).  There are lots of good suggestions there.

Second, be very careful about using a brush on your hair.  You should never brush your hair when it is wet or real damp.  Hair is very elastic when wet, which makes it vulnerable to breaking if stretched too far.  Brushing tends to stretch and break the hair if done while the hair is in that elastic stage.  A nice wide-toothed comb is better for wet hair.  (Making sure there are no ridges on the comb is important too).

Third, it sounds like you are using a lot of products that have silicone type ingredients (look for words ending in -cone).  Some types of hair do not tolerate the -cones well and will become dry and brittle.  Yes, the silicone smooths the cuticle of the hair which gives the appearance of healthy hair, but it can be preventing moisture from getting to the hair.  You might try a clarifying shampoo every now and then or a vinegar rinse between your shampoo and conditioner.  This would strip the product buildup off your hair and leave it healthier and more manageable.  Hopefully it would then allow you to blow dry less (or not at all).

Trimming split ends is a good idea.  This does not necessarily mean you have to shorten the length of your hair every time.  Using a very sharp scissors, you can trim (or dust) the splits.  Be sure to look for the splits on the shorter hair as well.

I hope this helps a bit.

Thank you so much for your reply. I did try vinegar rinse and it worked amazing. I did it twice so far and my hair did get shinnier and softer. It does look healthier. The only problem now are the split ends. Is there anything I can do to reduce the amount? Are there are any lotions/oils that can help treat them? Or trimming is the only way out?
I don't want to cut my hair too short, but in order for me to get rid of all the split ends I, unfortunately, have to take quite a few inches off Sad
But my hair looks so nice now...It's all pretty and long I can't imagine cutting it shorter anymore.

And about shampoos with -cone in them, I have physique (and it doens't have any of cone ingridients) but I really can't use it. My hair gets VERY dry and knotty after it. It looks extremely unhealthy, dry and it's impossible to separate all the knots afterwards. So I use Fructise, but now with vinegar rinse. However, my hair is a little oily and I have to wash it every other day. Is there anything I can do to reduce the excess oil?

thank you so much for your help Cheesy

Glad to hear the vinegar rinse is working for you.  Cheesy

The split ends should be trimmed.  I found that using a very sharp scissors - either a hair or embroidery scissors and trimming just the splits off will ultimately improve the condition of your hair.  If you just try to "cover" them, the split will usually get worse.  Plus the split ends are prone to tangling your hair, causing more problems.

When I "dust" my hair to trim the splits, I take small sections of hair and gently twist the hair.  The ends that stick out are checked, and trimmed if they are split.  This allows you to eliminate the splits without reducing the length of your hair.

Oily hair is sometimes caused by too much shampooing.  Shampoo strips the hair of its natural oils, so the scalp tries to replace the oils, making the hair oilier.  You can try to condition your head to fewer shampoos but trying to add a day between shampoos whenever possible. Gradually your head will produce less oil because there is less need for it with less frequent shampooing.

You might also try to use less conditioner on your hair, or even try to not condition the hair on the head at all.  I apply conditioner to only the hair below my ears - concetrating most of the conditioner to the ends of my hair.  Avoiding the scalp hair can help reduce the oily appearance of your hair.

I used to use Physique too. Be careful with that one. It has a few harsh ingredients...

cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, dimethicone, cetearyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, parfum, citric acid,

and thats just the conditioner! As you can see, a lot of alcohol based products in there which can dry the hair out. I had/have a lot of split ends too and I took drastic measures yesterday. I had 6 inches chopped off. It looks so much better now. Split ends cant be repaired. Cut them off. Hair will grow back, but leaving split ends will cause the damage to move up the hair as it becomes more stressed. I've taken tomorrow off work as a holiday. My plan is to try a hot oil treatment for the first time, then a deep conditioning which sits in it for 5 minutes, then a leave in conditioner and finally, I've got a night out on Sunday so I'm trying a new smoothing creme. It does have a few -cone ingredients, but my hair usually responds quite well to them. As long as its not sticky, I'm happy.

I second that!! There is no way to get rid of them other than to cut them off. Split end "healers" just seal the hair outside it and they split inside the "casing" and just get worse. But as BikerBraid mentioned, you don't have to lose length every time you trim splits.

Thanx guys, you are such a big help. i did get a hair apt and trimmed my hair a bit but unfortunatelly not all split ends are gone so i still sit and cut those annoying split ends off.
As to shampoos my God there are so many things to keep in mind Smiley but i think i am starting getting it. I got a deep conditioner and i also do vinegar rinses so hopefully it will help my hair. It already looks shinnier so I am happy and when split ends will be gone there will be no ends to my happiness.
Thanx a lot guys Smiley
