cones might be ok for my hair??
May 9th, 2004 at 9:07am

When people say that some hair likes cones, what does that mean exactly?

I've been experimenting over the last couple of months to find the right routine for my hair. I've tried jojoba oil, which was ok but was making my hair a bit straw like. I tried CO for 2 weeks but my scalp started breaking out in scabs (I have eczema on my scalp) so I stopped. And I've been avoiding cones thinking they may be making my hair dryer. But I was looking at some pics from last summer before an evil hairstylists chopped my hair to my shoulders and I remember that back then I hardly thought about y hair, and I used Loreal Vive nutri moisture conditioner which has the first ingredient as dimethicone. Back then my hair was pretty easy to manage, grew fast, and I got a lot of compliments.

So I am beginning to wonder if maybe my hair is one of those that LIKES cones or something. The only I didn't do then was clarify. I sometimes deep conditioned. Anyway, I'm wondering if maybe I should go back to using those old cones again and maybe just clarify once a week to avoid buildup. I'm wonderinf what people think about that. Could it be true that cones are actually good for my hair?

ps. I tried to put a pic of my hair from last year before the evil woman cut it off but I can't figure out how to do that. Does anyone know? ???

As for the pic,I won't be a great help Wink ,I've put my pics in my Yahoo-Album and posted the link here on the board- don't know any other way ???

Regarding the cones,I can tell from my own experience that some hair really likes cones, there are times when I couldn't do without them, especially after swimming and such.I simply could not detangle my hair with other products.

Also, when my hair is beginning to feel dry or difficult to detangle,I put in a few weeks of cones, and after that go back to products without them.Since visiting this site,I've used cones more sparingly,in fact my favourite conditioner is without cones, but I couldn't do without them completely.
When I use products with cones I make sure they are farther down on the ingredient list(I just tried the new Garnier Fructis Long&Strong Shampoo, where cones are among the first ingredients and it left my hair dry & flyaway).I also clarify once a month.

So for me a routine of cone-free most of the time and cones occasionally has really been the best. Cheesy

If -cones seemed to work for you before, I'd say give them another try (especially if you are not happy with the condition of your hair right now).  I'd suggest clarifying periodically, just to make sure the -cones don't smother your hair.

There does seem to be some hair types that handle/prefer the cones more than others.  We all just have to experiment until we find the combinations that work best for our hair.

cones work great on my hair (pantene user), though i use a clarifying shampoo about once a week or so to get rid of the build up.

Thanks guys!
I think I'll try using the products I was using again, and just add a clarifying rinse now and then.
My hair is very porous (genetically, not cause i did anything to it), baby fine, and I have way too much of it. I think maybe the cones protect it a bit and makes it a little less like a blonde afro.

Hi Noelkara,

Someone recommended Infusium leavein and wondered if anyone has tried it and what you think about it.

It's awful for my coarse hair. Then again, yours is very fine... so what didn't work for me may work for you. I'd agree that conditioners are an area for experimenting.
