She's right about one thing, and one thing only - the teased bangs have got to go. The woman should grow out her bangs, and grow her hair to classic length.

Quote:
Hair that long usually looks dry, unhealthy and typically is a variety of colors from graying at the roots to a faded version of their original color by their waist.

No, she should cut it short, bleach and perm it so it can be short and "dry, unhealthy, and...a variety of colors."

What a control freak b*. This woman needs to get a life of her own, instead of trying to run the life of a complete stranger.

Why are people always trying to make over other
people?  Has anyone ever seen those  riduclous
make-over talk shows where a person (man or woman)
is rather reluctantly being dragged in by a friend or
relative to get their super-long locks cut off and updated?  And then donated to Locks of Love?
Then the host always says "Oh you look so much
younger,better,ect. with your new style.

I hate it when people think I just don't cut my hair because I sm lazy or sloppy.  I love long hair and it's awful to sterotype me because I have it.  I think the worst part for me was when the woman said: " She definitely needs something more age appropriate ".  But it's hard not to let this hurt our feelings isn't it?

If her sister likes her hair that should be all that matters. The locks of love advertisment jumped out at me too.

What's wrong with that? Why should I have to be obsessing about how each hair is sitting on my head every second of the day? I have more pressing things to worry about, thanks.

And by the way, I think the girl in that Locks of Love ad has very lovely hair.

It really makes me mad when people always try to tell someone else how they should dress,or wear their hair. You should wear your hair however you like it. Those fashion people are always trying to make people cut off their hair to follow the trend, well forget the trend how about being diffrent? why would you want to look like everybody else, I say be diffrent, stand out in the croud. be beautiful and unique.  I remember when I had midback hair and my aunt suggested to my mother that my hair was too long and she should cut it short. It made me so mad. My great aunt she keeps her hair about 2 inches long and wears a rat tail and she had the nerve to say something about my hair. I am so mad. Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

It's certainly in our best interests to take control of our image and be the unique individuals that we are, but it's hardly in her best interest. No one would pay her to proclaim herself a fashion "guru" if everybody was off happily doing their own thing.

A "cop out to styling??" Long hair requires much more TLC and presents many more styling opportunities than short hair.

But why am I telling you this? You already know. Smiley Never mind everyone, we'll cling to each other and our unfashionable, dry, multi-colored tangles while we flee from the "calendar of life" (who knows what THAT'S supposed to be).

Cheers to all Rapunzels the world over!

The website has a 'contact us' link in the top menu. I suggest that everyone who is MAD use the link to tell the author what they think of the article. The answer to the question should have been specific to the situation that was presented. Instead the author over generalized and railed against long hair. Perhaps the author of the article can learn something from our feedback.

The following is going to sound extremely "EE-vill"

I say we just let the rest of the world bask in their short hair obsession while the longhair minority can stand out, feeling beautiful and different.

Although I do encourage my friends to have healthy hair care habits (e.g. nixing the irons and blow-fryers, combing and brushing properly, etc), I don't feel any need to encourage others to grow their hair to an extreme length. (I'm happy to have the longest hair of my social circle and secretly don't want anyone else to get the same idea. Well, folks, there's my confession...) I do make it a point to pound healthy hair care habits into my friends' chemically-processed skulls, since short hair also benefits greatly from gentle treatment.

Peace, Love, Empathy.

Actually, I always tell everybody that they should grow their hair long like me. It's kind of a standing joke, cause they know how I feel and can see how well I've done. I wouldn't give advice to a stranger, but none of my friends take their looks all that seriously. We're just ordinary people.

I agree with one part of this article:

"People need to present themselves in a way that makes them feel self-confident, fantastic, and great about themselves, not solely because they think the opposite sex loves it. Your sister needs to love how she looks, or put her best effort out to try to make the most of what she’s got! "

Exactly!  And if that means keeping her hair long, then let her keep her hair long!!  I had short hair a while back, and have spent the last two or three years growing it longer.  I feel so much more confident with longer hair, because I know that it suits me better than short hair, and I love my hair like this.

Me too! Two of my friends got their hair chemically straightened and they tried to hide it from me, because they knew I would "frown" upon that, LOL! I don't not encourage them to grow their hair long because I want to be the only one who has long hair, though. One of my friends is trying to grow out but keeps blowdrying and getting splits so she has to keep trimming, and the others suit shorter hair.

I read an article in a hairstyling magazine years ago:
It showed a tired looking woman with long (approaching
waist length hair ) that looked uncombed.  The caption
said: "when hair gets too long, it ceases to look pretty"
Can you believe that? Then it showed her "better"
makeover  Much shorter, shoulder length locks, layered
colored, styled, face all made up, ect.  I found myself
thinking, Long hair is very pretty, what are they talking
about? I only wish I could grow my hair that long.
Ditto the makeover shows, I always like the before
not the cut after.

Hi!

Help! The fashion police are after me!!! LOL!

People who write articles like that just show their lack of creativity!

Long hair shows (or should show) creativity, self-confidence and even a BIT of non-conformity...

I wish everyone had waist length hair because then long hair would be thigh or knee length! Grin

Guess I am a hopeless case?  Smiley

Long hair prayers and hugs,

Was watching 'America's Next Top Model', the one girl has long hair about waist length. One of the guys in charge told her long hair on a model is too impractical and too hard to work with and the Crystal Gail look is 'out'.  Angry Next week is when they get their make-up and hair restyled showed in the preview someone saying 'cut it off', so looks like it's going to go.  Cry I don't think I can bear to watch that.  Cry Cry Cry

Cop out - not fashionable - not age appropriate  Grin

they've got my number and I'm not changing it except for looooooonger.

It is kind of annoying that just as I'm growing out it seems everyone around is at right about the same length I am or a little longer i.e., Elizabeth Roehm (Law & Order),  all the CSI Miami women, Jill Hennesy, Poppy Montgomery ... dayam, they all got the idea the same time, eh.  Guess you can be unfashionable and unprofessional and inappropriate for your age and still get a job in TV  Roll Eyes ...g

Just saw this thread.  I'm just laughing at the absurdity Roll Eyes.  I checked out the link to their "runway hairstyles" -- get a grip!!  Their "long hairs"  look like me when I wake up in the morning -- needing a comb at least Undecided.  Those are real "retro" hippie styles from the 70's.  I am definately holding out for all the fun and sleek styles you can do with well-cared-for lo-o-o-ong hair. Grin  I've never been too fashionable anyway - have better things to do with my time and money.

oh, that kind of stuff just makes me smile. obviously written by a trend junky (a woman of course) who probably doesn't have the patience to grow what "men actually prefer" ... mwhahahahahahahahahahaha

and i am quite sure that people who take care of their long locks have actually better looking hair than short-haired poodles who change hair structure and or color every three months. because short cuts are of course INSANELY BORING.

I am new to this message board, having made one post earlier this evening, but actually, my husband has something that he would like to say (he fully supports me growing my beautiful hair longer)  Here he is...

Ok, I confess: My wife and I scan the internet for things to be offended by.  We have hoot mocking the absurdity that some people call reason, but that ariticle takes the cake.  Its impossible difficult to decide what offended me most, but I think it was the interweaving of truth and lies.  Honestly, not all women look good with long hair, and not all women with long hair put the effort in it that it needs to be beautiful.  The way a woman dresses DOES NOT shape her personality.  Her personality shapes the way she dresses.  A woman who grows her hair long as an extension of beautiful self will  be able to stop traffic.  A woman who grows her hair long as an extension of a stingy-hearted, lazy personality will be justly seen as jaded, tired, and ugly.  Long hair seem to effectively take what is inside and put is outside. The comments on the approval of men were just silly.  We humans are social creatures.  We act differently around others than we do alone. We look one way for ourselves at home, and an other for the person we are in public. It's not duplicity, its humanity, and wanting others to find beauty in the things we find beatiful is one of the most uniquely human and wonderfull charactaristics our species has.  Yes, if her single ruling thought was the approval of men she has a very serious problem, but should we tear down the Sisten Chapel because Michalangelo thought other people (a full half of whom would be women) would like it too?  Its absurd.  I think, though that the most dangerous half truth in the article was the comment on grey hair.  Grey hair is beautiful.  Its not spring time beautiful.  Young hair is beautiful with is bounce and vigor.  Its full of life and fun like babbling brook.  Grey hair is the cragy mountain range.  It's beauty comes because it survived.  Grey hair is a womans honor.  It means she accepts what she is and has no shame for it, only glory.  I guess in the end the article is just a letter from somewhere else.  Fantasy is lovely, but reality is real.  I would rather be a woman who is real and not a blowdried, silconed dream.

What a beautifully eloquent way to put it - especially from a guy! It makes me proud, even though I'm years away from going gray.

Crazy4israel, you're one lucky woman to have such an understanding husband. The world needs more men like this, and all women should have such a man in their lives.

Keep the important things in perspective Smiley  Thanks for your input, crazy4israel & hubby.  I have often heard similar wise comments through the years -- badges of honor marking our journey:  baby spit-up on the shoulder Wink, stretch marks Undecided, wrinkles and laugh lines Grin, gray hair.  Denial doesn't make the journey stop, but it can hinder the enjoyment of it!  And a sense of humor in all keeps things in perspective and makes it much more fun Cheesy

Did you know Locks of Love has more hair than people to give it to? If they have a stupid surplus, they make wigs and sell them for a profit, which isn't helping anyone. And even thought they claim to be aiding Chemo patients, they give the wigs they actually keep to a whole other disease population. Talk about false advertising!

Yes, most of the hair that gets used for "giving away" is to alopecia patients.
