CWC?
Aug 11th, 2004 at 4:03am

So I tried the whole CO thing, and I found out that it works really well with Redken conditioner, but not so well with White Rain conditioner. However, I have a lot more White Rain in my supply stash than Redken, and being a poor high school student can't afford to spend more on the rather pricey Redken conditioner. So I decided the other night to try CWCing (condition-wash-condition) with the White Rain, and it worked very well.

I started with coating all my hair with conditioner, leaving it in for about 10 min., rinsing and shampooing, then massaging more conditioner into my scalp for a few minutes, finishing with a long cold rinse.

My hair feels great, but I'm just wondering if there's any real benefit to a CWC routine over a normal shampoo+conditioner routine. Depending on the products I use, there's no huge difference in results, and it seems like CWCing just uses up more conditioner.

I also know there are few "rights" or "wrongs" when it comes to haircare - you just go with what your hair likes best - but is there a more effective approach to CWCing than what I tried? I've never read a detailed description of it before or examined the pros & cons; I've only heard it mentioned.

So if anyone can offer any advice, I'd be very grateful.  Smiley

I use it and like it. I have noticed that those who CO or use conditioner to cleanse their scalp do not have good results with CWC. The latter method was made for people who need extra moisture and who need to shampoo their scalp to get it clean (but do not want the damaging effects of the shampoo to get on their hair, which is why the s+c are rinsed out together. The "W" which is "wash" is the shampoo part). I haven't tried CO, but I have heard that you are supposed to use a "cheap" conditioner. The inventor of CWC, Martine, uses deep conditioners instead of regular conditioners.

What I do:
Twice a month I deep condition (my other two washes are herbal washes). I wet my hair and glob deep conditioner (with oil, honey, and other good stuff in it sometimes) in my hair. I leave it in overnight, and this serves as my first condition. The next morning when I rinse, I get my scalp wet and shampoo it. Then I rinse it all out together, sometimes holding my length out of the way. Then I condition again (if need be) with a tiny amount of conditioner and rinse it out without leaving it in at all.

I think that if CO works for your hair then you should do it. It is overall much cheaper I think (I heard that WR was only $0.78) and does use less conditioner.

Hope that helps  Wink

I've just now realized that I CWC too, and that my prewash treatment could count as a conditioning. It's one part coconut oil-76 and one part golden jojoba in a glass ashtray, and I just work it into my hair until it's greasy and sectioned. Usually takes about 15 minutes to get the hair fully covered, and takes maybe 1 1/2 tsp of the oils. I bun everything and let it sit while I get on Longlocks or whatever I can still do with my hands.. Roll Eyes.. and then the shampoo and silicone conditioner. CWC works great for me, but I just didn't realize I CWC'd until Leia mentioned "oils". Thanks ladies  8)

Thanks for the clarification (no pun intended  Roll Eyes), leia. I guess I really didn't use a very good method; plus when I woke up this morning my hair was quite greasy underneath and around my neck.

I like what you said about oils too. I've found that an egg+olive oil mixture works well for me; I might try that overnight (maybe with some coffee to darken it?) and shampoo & condition in the morning.

I think my main problem is really just with the White Rain. It worked well in adding extra moisture to my head, but left most of the length feeling greasy. And even though I only spent $1.00 on it, I have so much of it I feel obligated to get some use out of it. But hey, it also works well for shaving. Wink

I'll try oiling/shampooing/conditioning and report back tomorrow. Smiley

Well, I tried the oil/wash/conditioning routine, and it worked pretty well where I didn't somehow miss getting all the olive oil out.  Roll Eyes I honestly don't know how that happened...

I put a more detailed description of what I did in my personal hair journal if anyone's interested...

Anyway, I think I might try varying the ingredients and trying it again in the future. It's a good process, though I'm starting to want a good vinegar rinse...

You might want to try oiling a bit less if it's not all coming out. You only need enough so your hair looks a bit shiny, not greasy.  Smiley

Yeah, I did use more than I needed. I just don't understand how the left side came out fine and only the right side of the length is still oily. ??? Wierdness...

Did you bring your hair over your left shoulder to apply the conditioner? If you did this, even if you thought the conditioner was applied thoroughly, most likely you missed a few spots. You could try splitting your hair in half and bringing it over each shoulder before applying the conditioner.  Smiley
