Hurricane Frances...
Sep 5th, 2004 at 3:35pm

...is definitely heading straight for us. (I live in the panhandle of Florida)

So...yeah. I'm hiding inside my dorm building at the moment (which is, fortunately, practically a solid block of concrete) and watching the wind start to pick up.

That thing is HUGE. It's going to swallow the whole state up.  O.O

Anyway. If there are any other Floridians around...my prayers are with you all.

**continutes preparing for the storm**

My thoughts are with ANYONE that is being affected by this hurricane.  Stay safe, Ella, and let us know you are OK after it passes.

Any other Floridians, we are hoping for the best for all of you.

The weather's so nice where I am, it's strange too look out the window and realize that people in Florida are shuttering their houses and evacuating neighborhoods.  Undecided

Ella, my thoughts and prayers are with you and everyone else in the hurricane's path. Let us know how you're doing when it's passed!

Hi Ella, my thoughts and prayers are with you too. We have big storms here but never hurricanes. How do you prepare for them?

Where do you live, Ella? My brother and his family live in the panhandle (Navarre). I thought it looked like Frances was going to mostly miss that area!

*hugs*

I live in Tallahassee.

Frances is down to a tropical storm but it just swerved off into the gulf and now it's still headed right for us.

They're saying it might regain power while it's over the gulf and become a hurricane again.

We prepare for hurricanes by putting up hurricane shutters (if we can), buying lots of bottled water and canned food and batteries in case we lose power...and in a more unstable place (like, in my old apartment where I grew up in Miami) we would take breakables and wrap them up in blankets and put them in the closets, and take things off the walls and put them in the closets too so they wouldn't go flying if the building got rocked...but I live in a dorm building now that is basically a block of concrete with windows, so I just bought supplies for a power outage and didn't bother to do anything about the breakables.

It looks like we're not going to get hit very hard. But there's Ivan waiting out there in the Atlantic, too.

This is a very unusual hurricane season.

I'm praying for you and others in Florida as well.
Let's hope Ivan weakens or takes a course out to sea.

Wow,

That was a wimpy storm.

The center went straight through here and all the while we thought it was just the outer edges. Just rain. Rain. Rain. And winds a bit stronger than usual.

We're all laughing now because people were predicting another Hurricane Andrew and then it fizzled out like that. And, classes were cancelled today. And the weather is fine.   Grin

That is all. We didn't even lose power. It flickered, like, twice.

LOL!  Funny how you get all excited about a bad storm, and then are disappointed when it wimps out on you.

Glad that you survived easily!

Well...when you live in a state that's getting slammed by hurricanes, and you lived through hurricane Andrew, you develop a sense of humor about it.

My parents both think it's HORRIBLE that I get excited about hurricanes...I've been lectured by them. But, come on. It's not like I'm excited about death and destruction. I just find natural phenomena exciting. It's like the people who study hurricanes and volcanos. I think they're exciting to watch. At least I'm not one of those psychos that goes surfing in them, or gets in a car and chases tornados with a video camera...LOL.

Anyway, that's my spiel. And now we have no class. Whoooooooo!

Glad to hear things weren't too bad for you, ella. Smiley

And I'm the same way when it comes to natural disasters. Last summer there was a huge storm on the lake where my family has a small ( and very old) cottage that knocked down tons of power lines and trees and blew the roofs right off a row of condos. Luckily we were protected in a small bay, and me and my dad & siblings sat on the sunporch watching the rain and beach toys blowing across the lake with the electricity out. My stepmom thought we were crazy - and it really probably wasn't too safe - but I loved it.

And I'd totally be one of those psychos chasing after a tornado with a video camera.  8)

The weather *is* unusual this year. The hurricanes there, the crazy monsoons here... maybe the earth is just going through one of its "stages" (like the Ice Age?) Hmm...

I love it!!!   Grin

And for the record...Ivan is a category 4 now. Expected to go through the gulf and become a 5 again. And this time it's headed STRAIGHT for the panhandle without passing over the rest of the state first.

**gulp**

Well, at least we'll get some excitement!   Roll Eyes

Hopefully everyone will be OK.  I'm sending my "weather" thoughts out there to try to get Ivan to either change course or at least drop down in size to be less damaging.

Come on, everybody, if we think hard enough, maybe we can change the course of Ivan.
