Sorry I didn't respond earlier - I'm currently traveling and was not able to access the internet for a couple of days.

The pictures next to our posts are called avatars.  You can specify any picture-type file in your profile.  There are several "canned" options to pick from, or if you have your own picture hosted somewhere on the internet, you can reference it in the setup.
