chain mail and long fine hair
May 24th, 2005 at 9:56am

At a recent medieval fair, my group had a display table of crafts we do in our group and things we make.  It was a touchey feeley try on display.  we had a chainmail hood thing (sorry, I still haven't learned the right name! lol) and of course, everyone wanted to try it on.  We got a large number fo little girls wanting to try it on, and they all seemed to have long fine blond hair.  So pretty!  Foutunatley, we had a har pie, so we put a circular veil on them first, so the mail couldn't catch in their hair.
I couldn't help thinking about thise site every time we did this.
Ant the girls looked better than all the boys wearing the chain mail, cos the boys had nothing beneath the chain mail, and I know they never wore huge circular veiles under it, but they wore something (linnen hats and parring etc).

So yes, ladies and men, remember to wear something under chainmail.

and what a fashion faux pax it would be if we did forget to wear something under our chainmail.  Grin

Do members of your group make the chainmail?  I've always thought that would be an interesting if not tedious craft.  Many, many years ago I worked a job of putting split rings on fish hooks.  I would sometimes play around with the rings and hook them all together.  It was fun (but then I had to take them all apart  Tongue)

What other crafts does your group do?  Any spinning and/or weaving?

yes, we make our own chain mail.  Usually starting with making the rings, though I believe you can get ready made rings.  Yes, it takes forever, but I don't do it.  I have sat next to a young lord while he was patiently knitting his mail (he sais making chain mail was called knitting it, however it isn't anything like knitting! you hve to open the loop, attach it and close it again)

We do basically everything you can think of, spinning, weaving, cord making, caligraphy, brewing, leather working, weapon making, woodworking, blacksmithing, pluss we make all our colothes (some people even spin the thread to weave the material for their clothes, lol)

Personally I have done a little bit of tablet weaving and braid and cord making.  I am learning naalbinding (a viking art, so far I've made a little woolen baggie.  I want to make a hat and maybe some socks for round the house in winter)
I'm also learning embriodery, and how to handsew.

And we have to pay attention to our hair and hats too!
I find most things very hair friendly.
