I don't want to get it cut before I reach classic, but I don't want it to look scraggly, either.

oh yes, the endless dilemma!! i hate my thin ends, but they are in such a good state i just can't cut it, so these days i roll my braid up, get great curly ends. it looks way shorter, but fuller, and the ends are still there

if your ends are"just" thin, but not damged, i'd leave them too, or try trimming the tiniest bit, it sometimes doesn't take a lot to improve the look.
