Galadriel's Hair Culture Survey
Sep 2nd, 2005 at 5:59am

I'm not interested of your hair only!

1. Where do you live, what is your religion and ethnic background?

2. Do you belong to main culture of your area? If not, please describe shortly, how are you different?

3. How is hair in general viewed in the culture of your area?

4. What is most common hairtype and -color?

5. What are attitudes towards long hair on adult males/females?

6. How is hair maintained in main culture of your area?

7. What are most popular hairstyles?

8. What shampoo brands are sold in your nearest grocery store?

9. What hairtoys are sold where you live and what people wear?

10. Time to confess: are you the only person in your everyday circles who wears her hair in beautiful longhair styles, possibly decorated with pretty hairtoys?

11. Are there some specific beliefs/ hair related customs where you you live?

Here are my answers:

1. I live in a medium-sized town in Finland, am agnostic pagan and ethnic Finn.

2. Not quite. Majority of Finns (85%) belong to Evangelic Lutheran church. That doesn't make people religious at all, though. Most want just to have church wedding and funeral, and in the meantime don't attend to services at all. I'm also way "greener" than average Finn, and have much more international connections= somewhat less prejudiced. I dress a bit differently than other people, and my hair is already longer than that of most women  Cheesy . I also keep it usually bunned, which is extremely rare.

3. Almost everyone believes whatever hairstylists tell them. I guess that most women find their hair quite important part of their appearance. Most seem to want an "easy" and "practical" hairstyle- which is strangely enough associated with high-maintenance styled, short hair.  Roll Eyes

4. Maybe 1a or 1 b F i , dark ash blonde to medium brown. Color is just an educated guess though, since almost every woman colors.  Undecided There's quite a lot of variation, but F i hair is definitely common.

5. On women, very long hair is admired- but at the same time considered as a high maintenance hair that is impossible to achieve for most people. In general, everyone except stylists comment it nicely if they comment at all. Stylists frown upon long hair. Long hair on adult males is rare, and strongly associated with minority cultures/bohemian lifestyle. Main culture doesn't encourage it.

6. Frequent stylist visits.

7. For men, short cut. For women, short and colored. Lately, I've seen combinations of strongly contrasting colors like black/fire-engine red on middle-aged women. Younger women may keep their hair barely shoulder length and put it up in a claw clip. BSL or below hair is seen almost exclusively on children and teens, also teenage boys may have some length.

8. Eg. Pantene, XZ, ElVital (by L'Oreal), Head'n'Shoulders, Garnier Fructis, LV

9. Only cheap hair toys. Elastics with metal, claw clips, beak clips, barrettes. That's also all that people wear, claw and beak clips being most common (usually the hair is just shoved into the clip, resulting in a messy look). I'm a big exception. Grin

10. Yes!  Grin

11. Nothing comes to my mind.

gosh galadriel, that's a difficult one in my opinion. i just don't pay attention to most people's heads!!! i think many of my answers would come close to yours. although here catholic church is most common and people in central belgium don't attend services regularly either (except for some oldies). west belgium is far more traditional when it comes to church. east belgium is culturally too different (different language, and frankly we don't care about each other much) to state my opinion on but i think it goes in the direction of west belgium.

i have no idea about most common hair types. when i think back of my class at school, university, there was always a big variety. i bet the main color would be mousy brown though cuze that just makes the most sense. and that's why hair dye scores so well. most girls/women have hair shorter than bsl. i think those clips are most used among girls (peacock updo). and many women above 40 have those overly styled short cuts.  Roll Eyes

brands sold around here are pretty much the same: l'oreal (elseve), fructis burk garnier, ultra doux garnier, timotei, dove, supermarket brand. those are most common.

and usually i don't see any other people with expensive hair sticks or barrettes  Grin
i do see many girls with very long hair though, especially where i live now, when there's tons of tourists around. people never got distracted with my hair down but hair sticks can attract some curious looks, especially from little girls. i think to get comments on your hair length, one would have to be at least classic length, and that's longer than i am willing to go these days.

I agree with Styg these are some hard questions, but I will do my best:

1. Where do you live, what is your religion and ethnic background? I live in the States, Kentucky is my home in a very small town. Religion is EVERYwhere here, but religion doesn't mean much to me (just a high polished form of paganism) I am a Christian (not a denomnation)
I follow the Holy Bible to the "T", no exceptaions.

2. Do you belong to main culture of your area? If not, please describe shortly, how are you different? NO not at all, as I said before everyone claims to be a "christian" but is just religionist.

3. How is hair in general viewed in the culture of your area? Anything goes, as long as it is stylish and goes with hollywood

4. What is most common hairtype and -color? Wow, there is everything here, we have all different types of races and hairtypes and colors.

5. What are attitudes towards long hair on adult males/females? Depends on whose attitude. For the most part don't matter. However most older ones feel once you reach a certain "age" it is no longer ok to have long hair (even shoulder length is too long).

6. How is hair maintained in main culture of your area? Over washed and over cut and over styled

7. What are most popular hairstyles? What ever is most popular in Hollywood

8. What shampoo brands are sold in your nearest grocery store? Nothing to expensive, most expensive would  be Pantene, L'oreal, Garnier, stuff like that.

9. What hairtoys are sold where you live and what people wear? ponyholders, clips, barettes, handbands, anything bought at cheaper stores.

10. Time to confess: are you the only person in your everyday circles who wears her hair in beautiful longhair styles, possibly decorated with pretty hairtoys? No

11. Are there some specific beliefs/ hair related customs where you you live? There are quite a few "religions" refered to as "christians" who do not beleive in cutting their hair. But most "religionist faiths" does not think the length of your hair matters to God.

1. Where do you live, what is your religion and ethnic background? U.S.A, I'm Pagan-Christian-Buddhist, Asian. The city I live in is 98% caucasian, while "caucasian" includes Ukrainian, Serbian, etc.

2. Do you belong to main culture of your area? If not, please describe shortly, how are you different? No, I'm different at least by ethnic group, and don't socialize much to belong to any specific culture.

3. How is hair in general viewed in the culture of your area? The majority of women dye their hair blond, the majority of men don't do anything with their hair.

4. What is most common hairtype and -color? a 1a shoulder length flippy style, blond or brown with blond highlight.

5. What are attitudes towards long hair on adult males/females? Foreign, or lower middle class (because the majority of long longhairs e.g. waist+ are either Eastern European or simply don't have money for hair)

6. How is hair maintained in main culture of your area? processed, often overprocessed, but modern.

7. What are most popular hairstyles? shoulder length flip bob, ETA and Pixies are common.

8. What shampoo brands are sold in your nearest grocery store? The usual (Suave, V05, Pantene, Fructis/Garnier, Pert Plus, H&S, etc)

9. What hairtoys are sold where you live and what people wear? Those hair hosiery things, those "damage free" scunci elastics without metal "for thicker hair", claw clips

10. Time to confess: are you the only person in your everyday circles who wears her hair in beautiful longhair styles, possibly decorated with pretty hairtoys? yes. I've seen two people among a good 4000 of the people I see on a weekly basis, TWO PEOPLE, who wore hair sticks (once each).

11. Are there some specific beliefs/ hair related customs where you you live? not that I can see. Hair-related customs don't seem to exist, but I might be able to attribute that to the fact..... .. that I don't believe in them.

great survey!

Oohhh, interesting. It's cool to learn about you all, things I can't learn from hearing about your hair-escapades.  Wink

1. Where do you live, what is your religion and ethnic background? I'm in sunny California, a daughter of Christ and as white (English and Welsh and white Spaniard) as they come.

2. Do you belong to main culture of your area? If not, please describe shortly, how are you different? I guess I belong to my culture in my area. Right now my "area" mainly consists of the university, so my answers are coming from the people here at school.

3. How is hair in general viewed in the culture of your area? something that is to be put up a messy as possible, dyed to death and allowed to soak in the sea for as long as possible (my uni is on the ocean).  Tongue

4. What is most common hairtype and -color? bsl, slightly wavy, blond and overprocessed.

5. What are attitudes towards long hair on adult males/females? long hair is nice, but no one wants to put the time and energy (and money) to grow it out. They would rather just keep it "short and easy". That applies for guys too. For a while, long on guys was considered "rebelious", but long meant shoulder length.

6. How is hair maintained in main culture of your area? shampoo and conditioner, gel and hair spray.

7. What are most popular hairstyles? see answer 4

8. What shampoo brands are sold in your nearest grocery store? Suave, V08, White Rain, the Aussie brand (don't remember what it's called), others but I don't remember what they are called.

9. What hairtoys are sold where you live and what people wear? people usually wear elastic bands to do ponytails and buns, plastic clips and ribbons.

10. Time to confess: are you the only person in your everyday circles who wears her hair in beautiful longhair styles, possibly decorated with pretty hairtoys? Almost. I have a coworker who has beautiful hair to her bottom (she wanted to cut it because she surfs, but I gave her some ideas from this board to try  Cheesy) and my boyfriend's brother's wife has hair to her bottom as well. She and I share tips on doing hair up and the trials of tangles.

11. Are there some specific beliefs/ hair related customs where you you live? I don't think so.

1. Where do you live, what is your religion and ethnic background?
USA, Christian - as in a relationship with Jesus Christ, not a set of do's and don'ts; lots of German and a bit of Welsh, married into Slovakian-Croatian family with a smattering of others so we're Heinz 57 at this point

2. Do you belong to main culture of your area? If not, please describe shortly, how are you different? no. country girl at heart, living in metropolitan suburbia, not into the big house, big car, live in debt mentality, also when your best friend is the Creator-Redeemer your world-view is different

3. How is hair in general viewed in the culture of your area?
don't really know, there is a wide variety of cultures in this area and perspectives on hair is just as varied

4. What is most common hairtype and -color?
see #3 -- everything from blonde to black, fine to coarse, thin to thick

5. What are attitudes towards long hair on adult males/females?
I haven't heard much comment in public one way or the other, privately either actually.  I think many people really like long hair on women, at least, even if they don't want it for themselves.

6. How is hair maintained in main culture of your area?
usual, style/perm/color/cut but there is a significant proportion of long hairs too

7. What are most popular hairstyles?
I see a lot of shoulder-length on younger women, short layered or bobbed on older women.  Many of the 1st generation immigrants have mid-back length hair.  Longer hair seems to be pony-tailed or up in claws.

8. What shampoo brands are sold in your nearest grocery store?
just about any kind you'd want

9. What hairtoys are sold where you live and what people wear?
claws, scrunchies; can find hairsticks, bird-beak thingies, barrettes, etc  Most long hairs use scrunchies and claws. But no bun nets! Sad

10. Time to confess: are you the only person in your everyday circles who wears her hair in beautiful longhair styles, possibly decorated with pretty hairtoys?
no, but there aren't many.  and at work I've gotten comments about my hairsticks (usually things like, "carrying your chopsticks just in case?").  Today someone was asking how I got my hairsticks to work -- hehe I was able to show them how to put them in, think they will go home and try it again.

11. Are there some specific beliefs/ hair related customs where you you live?
Nothing universal here with so many different cultures mixing together.

1. Where do you live, what is your religion and ethnic background?

US - Santa Barbara, California

I'm Philippino - depending on who you talk to, Philippinos are considered either Asian or Polynesian.
My parents thought it was important to raise my brother and I as "Americans".  So unfortunately, I'm lacking in cultural knowledge.

My mom is Catholic, and my dad is Protestant. I don't really practice either one.  I would like to live as a Taoist, but it's a hard lifestyle in an urban area.  So I try to to apply it's philosophies - just trying to live in harmony with everything around me.  Since I chemically color my hair, obviously I'm not doing a very good job.  Wink

2. Do you belong to main culture of your area? If not, please describe shortly, how are you different?

I'm a bit of a recluse, so I don't really think I fit anywhere, physically.  I usually feel out of place in any group - kind of feel like an observer than being a part-of.  But if you count Internet Culture as a "real" culture, then I'd say that was my culture.

I think what makes me unique is that I'm a geek and an artist, and  I don't follow trends.

3. How is hair in general viewed in the culture of your area?

I don't think people care about it as much as other body parts, if you know what I mean.  *wink*

4. What is most common hairtype and -color?

Blonds and brunettes of all textures.

We also have a large Hispanic community - the women usually have long, wavy unprocessed hair done neatly in buns.

5. What are attitudes towards long hair on adult males/females?

When it's waist length or longer, it's greeted in awe.  Otherwise, I don't think people think much of it.  There seems to be more pressure for women to color their gray.   Undecided

6. How is hair maintained in main culture of your area?

Shampoo and conditioner from the grocery store and salon.  Straightening irons with some kind of styling product is popular.

7. What are most popular hairstyles?

The "Jennifer Aniston" cut with "Kelly Clarkson" streaks.  Smiley

8. What shampoo brands are sold in your nearest grocery store?

I don't shop this aisle much, but I remember seeing the ones mentioned above.

9. What hairtoys are sold where you live and what people wear?

I think I see scunchies around the most.

10. Time to confess: are you the only person in your everyday circles who wears her hair in beautiful longhair styles, possibly decorated with pretty hairtoys?

Yes, most women at my work have short hair.  I know two people that have hair longer than me, but they wear it down.

11. Are there some specific beliefs/ hair related customs where you you live?

None in my area.

As part of traditional Philippino dress, women made wreaths of tamanu flowers and wore them in their hair.  This is the flower:

1. Where do you live, what is your religion and ethnic background?
I live in a suburb in Hawaii. I'm agnostic with Buddhist leanings, and Japanese and Okinawan.

2. Do you belong to main culture of your area? If not, please describe shortly, how are you different?
Hmm, it depends. If it's religion, I'd say no. With other things, I tend to do what I find interesting. I don't think that answered the question at all.  Tongue

3. How is hair in general viewed in the culture of your area?
For a lot of women, it's important. But just because it's important, that doesn't mean it's taken care of properly.

4. What is most common hairtype and -color?
Since close to 78% of the population identifies him/herself as a minority, the dominant hair type is N-C, ii-iii. As for hair color, it's dark brown to black. However, a lot of people dye or highlight their hair.

5. What are attitudes towards long hair on adult males/females?
On women, long hair is fine. When I go out, I see a lot of women with hair that's at least BSL. Waist length hair isn't uncommon either. On men, it's not as common, but I it seems to be OK.

6. How is hair maintained in main culture of your area?
Many people go to the salons and get brown or golden highlights. But there's sooo many people with color treated hair who don't take care of their hair--it looks dried out and I just want to hand them a bottle of deep conditioner.

7. What are most popular hairstyles?
Anything goes. There's a lot of men and women who keep their hair short, but there's also a lot of women who grow their hair out. Um, layers are popular with women, as are Japanese straight perms with some Japanese nationals.

8. What shampoo brands are sold in your nearest grocery store?
I think everyone listed them earlier.

9. What hairtoys are sold where you live and what people wear?
Cheap hairtoys with seams. A lot of people make use of claw clips.

10. Time to confess: are you the only person in your everyday circles who wears her hair in beautiful longhair styles, possibly decorated with pretty hairtoys?
No. There's so many people with long hair here.

11. Are there some specific beliefs/ hair related customs where you you live?
Yes, some are listed in the "Pretty But Perilous" posts in the Hair and Society board. Oh, but for the dancers who are serious about hula, they *should* have hair that's at least waist length. If you watch hula competitions, it's really rare to see someone with hair that's shorter than that.

1. Where do you live, what is your religion and ethnic background?  I live in Houston, Texas. I am Caucasian and am not really religious.

2. Do you belong to main culture of your area? If not, please describe shortly, how are you different? Yeah. I'm not one to stand out or anything.

3. How is hair in general viewed in the culture of your area? Despite the hot trend of waves and curls, straight is the way to go.

4. What is most common hairtype and -color? Brown and stick straight hair.

5. What are attitudes towards long hair on adult males/females? Completely acceptable.

6. How is hair maintained in main culture of your area?
It's stick straight and obviously straightened with a flat iron
7. What are most popular hairstyles? Shoulder-length layered hair is in, but it sadly has to be stick straight.

8. What shampoo brands are sold in your nearest grocery store?  All the cheaper brands. Herbal Essences, VOS, Pantene Pro V, Bed Head, Got 2 B, etc

9. What hairtoys are sold where you live and what people wear? Nobody really wears any hairtoys.

10. Time to confess: are you the only person in your everyday circles who wears her hair in beautiful longhair styles, possibly decorated with pretty hairtoys? Nope. I'm probably the only one that doesn't! I prefer wearing my hair in its naturally wavy/curly state.

11. Are there some specific beliefs/ hair related customs where you you live?
Not that I can think of.

1. Where do you live, what is your religion and ethnic background?  Southern Ohio (but I'm really from West Virginia); lapsed Methodist; and I'm your basic hillbilly mutt (Scotch-Irish, German, British, Dutch, French, and heaven knows what else.)

2. Do you belong to main culture of your area? If not, please describe shortly, how are you different?  Not really.  I'm quite non-conservative and I hate football.

3. How is hair in general viewed in the culture of your area?  It depends.  It seems that (as nearly everywhere) older women should have short, highly styled hair, usually in a bouffant, but I've never gotten any grief about my hair and my friend who's in her 50's has never gotten any grief over her shoulder-length hair.

4. What is most common hairtype and -color? straight and various shades of brown.  Usually highlighted.

5. What are attitudes towards long hair on adult males/females?  On women it's not really a problem, though I've never seen anyone with long grey hair.  The general feeling is that if the hair is grey it should be cut, otherwise it's acceptable.  For men,  if they chew tobacco and wear a ball cap a not-too-long mullet is ok, but otherwise the hair must be short.

6. How is hair maintained in main culture of your area?  Frequent visits to the hairstylist.

7. What are most popular hairstyles?  Younger women wear their hair long, loose, and very straight.  Old(er) women wear bouffants, though occasionally I'll see one with her hair in a bun.  I've seen lots of ponyloops and ponytails lately as well.

8. What shampoo brands are sold in your nearest grocery store?  I don't use shampoo anymore so I haven't looked for a long time--the usual big-name brands, I guess; VO5, Herbal Essences, Head and Shoulders, Garnier, Mane and Tail, etc...

9. What hairtoys are sold where you live and what people wear?  Nothing special, mostly cheap stuff.  Lots of hair claws and clips.

10. Time to confess: are you the only person in your everyday circles who wears her hair in beautiful longhair styles, possibly decorated with pretty hairtoys?  I'm trying to educate everyone but it's going very slowly.  So yes, yes I am.

11. Are there some specific beliefs/ hair related customs where you you live?  A number of the fundamental churches around here don't believe women should cut their hair ever.
