I thought this internet article was interesting and wanted to "shair".  Smiley

 Straight Talk about Hair
beauty@fashionindia.net

Supermodel Achla Sachdev highlights the most commonly asked questions about hair care to FashionIndia’s, Ranjit Rodricks.

Does hair really get used to shampoos? Is it a good idea to rotate between a few to keep your favourite shampoo effective?
Complete nonsense - there’s no scientific basis for this theory. Hair might not come out the same every time, but shampoo isn’t the culprit. Other things such as the weather, styling, scalp secretions etc are responsible. So if you find a product you like, stick with it.

But how exactly does one choose the right shampoo? There are so many available. and most people’s hair is a bit of everything - oily at the scalp, normal in the middle, dry at the ends. Which way does one go?
First of all, there is no such thing as "normal" - your "normal" isn’t my "normal". Categorising hair as normal, oily or dry is an old-fashioned notion. These days good shampoos are labeled based on what they actually do.

Think about what your hair needs - moisturising, volumizing, straightening, defrizzing - and choose a product meant to solve the related problem. You might have to experiment a little.

What kind of conditioner’s must one use? And how do you use a conditioner?
The prime purpose of conditioner is to detangle your tresses, which is very important so you don’t tug and break strands while brushing or combing.

Always use one, but STAY AWAY from BALSAM types - more modern ingredients do the job better. Also, you only need to apply conditioner to the length of hair - from about the ear level down. Skip the roots and scalp.

Is it okay to wash your hair in the evening after you come back from a hard day’s work, even though you washed it in the morning?
Washing hair twice daily is perfectly fine - lots of people now do, especially during the summer months when you sweat a lot. But you don’t have to. A little bit of witch hazel (buy it on your next trip abroad), applied along scalp with cotton balls will get rid of the greasiness.

What causes split ends? Is there any way to fix them?
Short of cutting them off - which is incidentally the best solution, you can temporarily bind them together with gel or a silicon based styling product. Just a tiny bit smoothed on the ends is all you need. Too much, and your hair will look oily.

Is it better to let your hair dry naturally rather than blow-dry it?
Poor blow dryers! They get blamed for a lot of things that aren’t their fault. Believe it or not, a hairbrush is far more damaging. The problem isn’t the implement itself, but with the way one uses it.

Most people keep the blower on long after their hair is dry, which totally saps moisture from the hair shafts. The best solution is to stop over styling.

What is the best kind of hair brushes to use?
Believe it or not, the cheap plastic type is much better for hair than the costly natural ones. The latter have too many bristles spaced close together, which tend to cause snags and breakage. I recommend sticking to nylon bristles in widely spaced rows. And don’t ever over brush - a sure way to damage your hair.

What about massaging the scalp to get circulation going - should one do it? And what about headstands?
Please massage! The best, most efficient method is to spend an extra minute in the shower. If you’re experiencing hair loss, a more elaborate and professional massage would help. And as for standing on your head, all it might do is give you a headache.

Can one’s diet affect the health of their hair?
Fruit and vegetables eaten regularly ensure energy availability to hair follicles at all times. Keep diet low in fat, salt and sugar and high in protein and carbohydrates. A multivitamin is a good idea too.

But all this only benefits new growth and since hair grows at the rate of only a half-inch per month, you wont notice any difference for at least three months.

Is there any reason why one should not colour their hair?
Hair colour is a big morale booster - so go ahead and be happy. However, dye and bleach can be harmful so be sure to deep-condition often.

What about styling products? Which products are the best for major fullness?
A category called volumizers does the job effectively. These usually come in a spray format. Concentrate application at the roots.

Thanks, Christiana! I think this is the first time I've heard that plastic brushes are better than natural ones. Interesting.

Good article, true at many points and false at some. I mean modern products?? Okay, if they mean chemicals are more effiecient...sur ethey are (at giving cancer) and I find natural shampoos and conditioners work better on my hair then all those drug stor eones. Oh and blow dryers?? Some warped information there...oh and not to mention the boar britsle burshes? Do people brush to detangle , because I comb first...
Oh and now I see it...it's a supermodel. Supermodels are used to blow dryers and plastic brushes...yea she wouldn't want to lose moeny by making her stylists look bad...plus they are brain wahsing her. That and photoshop...

Thanks for posting the article.

For the most part, I'd agree with most of what she said.  I'm surprised she didn't mention comb types though.  And if you HAVE to use a hair dryer, it's true you need to keep moving it around and not overheat your hair.  I don't expect everyone can be convinced to air dry, so that would be the next best solution.

The one funny thing was the headstand comment!  Has anyone heard that myth?  This was the first I've heard of it!  Cheesy

Hi Khrome, I can't say I've heard the headstand myth before, but I HAVE heard that to get the blood circulating to the scalp, you should lie on your bed with your head hanging over the edge.  Maybe for about 5-20 minutes?  I forget the amount of time.  Much better than headstands, I'd say...I used to do the head-hanging over the edge deal but lately I have forgotten about it.  Hey, thanks for sparking the memory!!!

I do the head-hanging-over-the-edge-of-the-bed trick every time I do a scalp massage. Definitely seems to help with the bloodflow.

Interesting article...though I don't agree with much of what was said in it. One thing is, of course, that it is not written from "long hair" perspective. Short hair that is trimmed every 6 weeks can take much more damage than hair that is supposed to be healthy when it's 6 years old and older.

Very good point Galadriel!  I have a friend that totally abuses her hair, but it always seems to be healthy....BUT she is also content with chin to shoulder length hair, so she gets frequent hair cuts of at least an inch each time.  So, her hair never has a chance to get "old"!

As for the head stands, I read that in an article years ago, in a teen-mag I think, but this was not for the hair, it was supposed to be for a healthier complexion...and yes, I tried it...and no, it didn't work!  I guess it does get the blood flow to your head, but how long can one really stand on their head, I ask you?  Tongue
