Has anyone made a satin tube sock for rolling?
Apr 28th, 2006 at 6:59pm

I'm curious........I was thinking that if we sleep on satin pillowcases and wear silk caps to bed.......why does anyone use a cotton tube sock to roll their hair???  If you're handy with a sewing machine or a needle and thread, why not make a few satin "tube socks" and roll your hair with that????  Interesting,no?

I prefer to use a cotton sock because it "grips" the hair as I start to roll it and when I tie it, it does not slip out and untie.

But if you try it out - let us know how it works.

I figured the satin would slip more than the cotton, but what if you make it a tube, slip your hair or braid in the tube and then with another tube start to roll....hmmmmm  might be worth a trip to the fabric store to get some satin and take out the Singer and start the creative juices flowing,eh? Hi, I haven't logged on for a while but found this satin tube idea a very interesting one. I did think about something like this when I was reading about the satin pillows but couldn't work out how to keep it in place without the hair sliding in it. A tube would be a great idea. How about a long tube, slipping the hair inside and then fastening like a ponytail, (so you have a long satin ponytail). Then you could roll it up or leave it long. You would have to make a fairly long tube to allow for hair growth of course!

Hi Jules,
You were thinking exactly what I thought, but didn't get a chance to post it!  I figured I'd make a very long satin tube with my sewing machine, braid my hair and put it in the tube, use a hair safe ponytail holder(scunci) and then either use a cotton tube sock or make another satin tube to roll it all up!!! Grin  Now I just have to get myself over to Save-A-Lot or AC Moore's and pick out some satin fabric and start sewing!!!

Great minds think alike Curlgirl 64. I will have a look around our local fabric shop too and see what  I can come up with. The other thought I had was to elasticate the top of the sock but it might be a bit difficult to slip the hair through and the elastic be tight enough to hold at the top. I straighten my hair so no need to braid it and it should be easy to brush in the morning, no tangles hopefully. I will 'report back' once I have got around to making my 'sock' as and when work permits. I also wondered how silk might work being a more natural material but might be quite costly. Not sure how it would compare with the cost of satin. Good luck with yours and hopefully you can let us all know how you get on too.,

lol! Jules.  I'll be reporting back on my progress with that too.  Don't know how expensive the silk or satin is over in my next of the woods, but I'll do some "searching".  I thought about that elastic at the top too,but had the same conclusion as you.  What if it were like a draw string that you can control how tight you make it depending on how thick your hair would be!  That's a thought  Hey,we may need to think about a patent for this!!! Grin  The drawstring contraption has to be hair safe though.....hmmmmmmmmmm are your "wheels spinning" yet Grin

Hi  Curlgirl. the drawsting could be just a piece of elastic through the top of the silk or satin and you could leave a slit at the side so the top would be quite wide to get the hair through. Whatever you use for he drawstring wouldn't matter as it would sort of thread through the top where you turn the satin/silk over to make a sort of hem open at both ends then thread whatever you like through it, I thought elastic might be better because you could tighten it enough to make it stay, but anything would do really.

Hope this make sense, I shall base my prototype on this idea. It will be interesting to see how much you have to pay for yous silk or satin, I live in England and sure as hell it will be dearer here. Have you seen our petrol prices.!!!!!!!! But that is whole other subject.

yeah, man oh man, gas prices are out of this world!!! Angry
I don't even drive(long time and whole other story there, too) and I'm *@&@#*($&@($* about how high everyone has to pay for gas!!!
Back to more happy things........hair growing!! Grin  I can't wait to see how much or less satin or silk is in Bklyn.  I'll let you know what I find.  It will be fun to experiment with different prototypes to get something that you'll finally say,"Ah,now this will work!"  Let's keep in touch!

Will do Curlgirl.

It's raining here in England today, so if it isn't raining tomorrow I will go into my local town and have a look and see what I can find. I'll let you know when I get the satin and how much it is over here.

Good deal!  It's raining over here, too!  Makes it hard for me to either take my scooter out on the bus or walk with my cane Sad  When the weather is better in a few days I'm off to the Save-A-Lot store.  I wish there was a fabric or big craft store near me.  Ya figure with all the other stores here there'd be one!

Hey... good idea, Curlgirl!

I slip my braid into a trouser sock at night... it's kinda-silky in feel and lets the hair glide....

but this thread got me thinking.. you know what would be really nice to have?  A silk-lined snood.  I've had some reservations about buying a silk sleep cap because.. well, all the ones I've found aren't exactly... errm... romantic looking.   Tongue

Even when it's bed time I want to accessorize...  Roll Eyes HA!

At any rate, I think a silk-lined snood would be very pretty (and cool).  I wonder if I could get one of the snood website ladies to make me one?

Hi Novusfemina!
Sounds like a great idea for a snood.  I've always wanted one,but never bought one.  It seems that only the Jewish ladies wear them when I've seen them around my way.  What about asking LadySnood to make one or find out if she can?  She's the only site that I went on to see her handywork.  Let me and the rest of us know if she can do the job for ya!  Yes we must atleast try to look romantic for bedtime when we are accessorsizing!!!!  (spelling?)
