I must be allergic to olive oil because it breaks me out pretty badly.

You can try shea butter, that would be very good for your hairtype. Also emu oil as well (a bit pricey though).

I'd recommend coconut oil, LD. My hair is medium texture but wavy so its dry. In the past I have mixed equal amounts of heavy duty conditioner with olive oil and applied that as a treatment.
Sesame oil is another option, used often in ayurveda. Check out www.banyanbotanicals.com for some of their oil blends-they have herbs in an organic sesame base that are good for the scalp and hair. Right now I use Bhrami oil, there are 3 herbs that are particularly good for the hair and scalp, bhrami being one of them.
Although our hair is dry, it can be fragile so I personally think olive oil is too heavy. I stopped using it at least a year ago.

La Diosa, you might want to try camellia oil too - here is a site where you can get a small free sample (well, you pay for shipping.)

As far as shea butter, I used it sucessfully for several months, but my hair seems to be taking better to camellia oil at the moment. When I first tried shea butter, I was using too much and also had the greasy feel. The trick is to just use a tiny amount - about the size of a pea.

BB - the article is great and very helpful! I've only oiled my ends after a wash, but I think I'd like to try the nightly oiling come winter time.

What might be a good frequency to do this? I don't want to be a greaseball but I know I should probably oil it some...

Then adjust accordingly. In the winter I oil almost nightly, but in the summer I oil only after shampooing, so that would be once a week, sometimes twice a week.
