A beehive fit for 1959
Jun 29th, 2006 at 8:41pm

Hi all!

I am currently rehearsing for a play that takes place in 1959.  I am playing a 16-year-old girl who's mother does not want her to 'tease' her hair.  My character later enters onto the stage with a beehive.  The stage direction exactly as printed in the script is:

"Her hair is teased into a heehive fit for 'Mysterious Island."  It is HUGE."

I cannot go to a hair stylist to get this done before the show, since I enter half way through with it - and then need to take it out easily for the end of the show.

I was wondering if anyone could help me and tell me how to make my thick, wavey, an inch past shoulder length hair into a giant beehive that will be strong and sturdy enough to stay in while I run around on the stage and behind it, but can come out easily enough.

Thank you so much!

Always, Michelina

Sorry, but I think you may need to get a wig.

When I was in drama club I played a character in the 60's that had a beehive.  It requires teasing of all of your hair and copious amounts of Aqua Net.  It is NOT easy to remove.  People used to do this do one day and wear it the rest of the week!  Our director did my hair and it took at least 30 minutes for her to do it, and took me an hour to get it out.

Good Luck, have fun in your play!!!

Yep - I grew up in the 50's/60's.  My sister wore her hair in a behive.  I think she used a can of hairspray every day!  Grin  Definately not a style for quick changes or even caring about the health/quality of your hair.

A wig would probably be your best bet for this type of hairstyle.

Your play sounds very similar to "Hairspray."

Everyone in both the film and stage versions of this production wore wigs. They really are the best way to get the temporary style you want, which can be put on and removed easily, without destroying your real hair.
Real hair often can't meet the ęsthetic demands of the stage, anyway.

If you hang out in the theatre circuit long enough, you'll get used to wearing wigs soon enough. Your local theatrical supply store should have something that will work. You'd be amazed at how high & elaborate they can make those beehives!  Wink  Good luck.

Yeah, you couldn't do a real beehive inbetween scenes.  I used to tease just my bangs in the 80's and that took 15 minutes on a good day!

Go to http://shopping.yahoo.com and search for "beehive wig" .  You'll get quite a few results.
