please help!
Aug 6th, 2006 at 10:59am

hey, im new here!  Smiley I used to have lovely curly hair that came down to just below my elbows. Then i discovered hair straightners and hair dye.  so after many botched up home dye jobs and several salon corrections most of my hair was so damaged it had to be cut to just below my jawline! Cry
It is now below my shoulders and it just has no life anymore! my hair also has layers, so all the dry ends make it even worse.
I have decided to stop abusing my hair and limit the straightening.  I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get my hair back into good condition while growing it long again???it just looks so bad at the moment!

sorry for the very long post!

Have you tried deep conditioning treatments? They help alot. My hair got bleached and I am in the process of trying to grow that out, so I know how you feel. Also try to limit your time with blowdryers or straighteners, that also can damage hair over a period of time. Good luck!

thanks for replying! yeah i have been using herbal essences intense conditioner, but the lengths still look dry and is brittle.  Any suggestions of what would be a really good intense conditioner?  I will try and limit the use of straightners, but my curls are really hard to tame!

Welcome, XKirstyx!

I like Snowy's Deep Moisturizing treatment... there are several women who have reported using it in their hair journals, and love to sing it's praises.

The recipe is easy:

1 part honey
1 part aloe gel (the clear kind without medicines in it)
4 parts moisturizing conditioner

you mix the ingredients in a bowl, and warm it a bit in the microwave.  Apply the mix to freshly shampooed hair, then place your hair under a shower cap or a plastic sack.  Leave it on for about an hour (longer if you like) then rinse.  Hair is shiny, moisturized and happy.  Smiley

Good luck, and I hope one of our suggestions help!

xKirstyx,

It will take several months of regular deep treatments for your hair to improve.  If you can give up the blowdrying and straightening for that time it would be most beneficial.

Regular trims during this time will help slowly remove the damaged ends, which is the only way to get rid of them.

As a wavy/curly girl myself, I recommend Ouidad's products.  You can check them out at www.ouidad.com

Good Luck!

Hey Kristy, and welcome.  Smiley

I think that most of the other long-haired ladies here have covered it.

All I can suggest is: 1.) regular trims, 2.) deep conditioning treatments, 3.) stop dyeing and frying.

Hope your hair improves soon. None of us are strangers to ruining our hair in some way or another at some point, so you're not alone.

thank you for the advice, i had just about given up on my hair until i found this site.
Im going to get a good trim, and hopefully that should get the worst of the damage off.
I just bought all the honey and aloe vera gel that you recomended, Novusfemina. Ill give it a try tonight and hopefully that will help!

Wonderful, xKristyx...  Smiley

I started doing Snowy's Moisturizing treatments because I had taken to reading Angel's hair journal, and she said she used it all the time..  Wink  So I started using it, and I have to say that it has changed my hair overall for the better.

Remember, it will take as long (or longer) to recover from the damage done to your hair as it did to make the damage.  Just be patient and soon you'll see improvements.  Wink

I tried it last night and it has made my hair a lot softer! and the damage less severe looking. it has also made it nice and shiny. i have quite dark brown hair with a lot of deep red in it. Before it had become a dull brown, but this seems to have brought out the lovely red colour again Smiley
Went to the hairdressers and she cut about 2 1/2 " off!  Cry . But i suppose the damage had to go!

thanks for sharing the treatment tip, i will definitely be using it again! Smiley

Hello xKirstyx!

I want to wish you luck on growing your hair long and healthy again, sounds like your hair has lots of beautiful potential so that should give you a lot to look forward too!  I think starting with a good cut was definitely the right first step, it could only get better from there with lots of tlc...and no more dyeing or straightening!  Wink

If you want a little encouragement, I think you should check out Trisha's journal, she went from only a few inches from her head to bra strap length in a little over a year with good care.  That's amazing, wish my hair could grow like that!

Good luck!

I noticed some people mentioned blow drying.  That is definitely something to steer away from.  But I know that drying times can take forever - when mine was elbow length, it took at least 3 hours.  At waist length, it was 5 hours.  But what really helped is using a microfiber towel.  They're kind of expensive, but well worth it.  They just suck moisture right up and reduces your trying time.  It's still several hours, but not 5!  Smiley

It might take a few months to get into a routine that works for you, so keep with it!  I'm sure you'll achieve beautiful hair again!

Hey!
Thought I would leave an update.  I have been doing lots of intensive conditioning, and finding out what products work best on my hair.  I no longer straighten or use the hairdryer,  bought a microfiber towel, only 75p so not bad!
My hair has just improved SO much these past few weeks!  And I have 1/2 inch of growth!!!! Thanks everyone for the tips and encouragement!  Smiley
