Hard water effects on thick hair
Aug 7th, 2006 at 1:22am

I have thick hair with a lot of volume (5 inch circumference).  The blast of a blow dryer can really do scary things to my hair so I don't use  heat any more.  Unfortunately even without styling tools, I have poofy hair that is hard to control.  I went to the Caymen Islands in February; and even with their humidity, I noticed my hair was much softer and less poofy.  Also, the shampoo suds were much more abundant with less amount used.  It had to be the softer water.  I wonder if anyone else with thick hair has correlated this with hard water.  Should I invest in a water filter shower head?

Hard water can cause more build up of product on your hair, making it less manageable.  You could try to use a vinegar rinse to help with the build up and restore the natural pH of your hair.

I do ACV rinses already, but when I was in the Caymens for a week, I didn't have any ACV with me, used the same shampoo/conditioner, with high-humidity, and my hair was curlier and felt much softer.  I live in a high-humidity area so the only thing I can think was different-- the water condition.  Anyway, can using ACV really be helpful if you have to rinse it out with hard water?

Try using a more diluted solution of the ACV and don't rinse it out.  Yes, you will smell of vinegar for a while, but usually that smell disappears when the hair dries.

You might also try doing your final rinse with either rain water, which tends to be naturally soft water, or use purchased spring water that would not be as hard as your regular water.

Thanks for the advise, but I went to Lowe's this morning and purchased a filtered shower head.  I have replaced 2 water heaters in 15 years of living in the same house due to hard water.  Also, I have to clean my shower heads frequently with CLR to remove calcium deposits.  The next time my water heater dies I am investing in a inline water softer system.
I will continue ACV rinses, but I really think this filtered shower head can't hurt.  I may as well go back to Sally's Beauty Shop and buy some Ion Hard Water Conditioner Rinse.  I have used it in the past, but I will try it without for awhile to gauge the new shower head.

Well, I figured there were not too many thick hair people out there due to the small number of posting on  the "In the Thick of It".  I will report that the shower filter was a benefit.  My husband even reported that it felt a lot better.  That is saying something since he isn't really that interested in hair (except losing it).  So to really evaluate the effectiveness of this showerhead, I am sticking to my usual routine and not add or substract any products for now.

I'm glad the shower filter seems to be working.  Can you tell us more about the filter?  Is it filtering out the minerals?  Do you replace the filter or clean the filter?

It has a replacement filter inside the chrome head--you replace it every 6 months according to directions.  It is suppose to soften the water and filter chlorine occurring to the package.  Since calcium is the component that hardens water, I am assuming the "softening" effect removes the calcium.  It has a revolving head to dial the desired water flow which I like because I can soften the flow of water.
At Lowe's they had just the filter part you could "add-on" to your existing shower head, but I got the head with the filter inside--just unscrew the end and put the new filter inside.  I opted to get the whole schbang because I figure my old showerhead was ready for retirement.  I may change the filter more frequently than directed depending on how the water feels.
I can definitely feel a difference in my hair.  My waves and curls are softer.  Also, I don't think I am imagining it, but my hair dried faster.  Thirdly, my skin felt less dry as well.  My big tester on the skin effect will be my husband; he suffers from ezcema.

No problem--just in case anyone reads this thread and wants to check into the showerhead, I found it @ Lowe's, brand name Sprite.  I would love to hear from other users.  Happy Showering! Wink

I painted today--once again changing the square footage of my interior with another coat of paint.  This time it is my son's room; he is away at college.  He took a summer class, and he will be starting his final year at college this fall.  He plays collegiate soccer as well.
After painting, I took another shower with my new filtered showerhead.  I conditioned only since I washed yesterday.  I can report I still love the results with this new showerhead.
I would like to also tell the readers that I came very close to losing my precious son tonight.  He was coming home to spend his last available weekend with us before soccer preseason starts, and he hydroplaned his car.  I think it is totalled from the phone picture he sent me, but luckily all those air bags and seatbelt protected him from harm.
I am waiting for him right now.  Luckily, his roommate was just a few minutes behind him and rescued him from the road.
It certainly puts into prospective what is important in life.  I'm not even sure if this will be read, but I needed to put it down to work through the process.
I can report that he is okay.  Shaken but not too dented like the car.
Funny thing that it was his old room that I was painting today--strange!
Oh, well, all those out there who have little kids and wondering how you will make it another day, let me tell you that no matter how hard it is to deal with a toddler, at least you know where they are.  I think I aged a few more years in the last few hours--and maybe learned a little something as well.  Who knew--old dogs can learn.  Thanks for reading.

I'm glad your son is OK.  It is soooo scarey when something like that happens... you realize that no matter what age your children are, they are still your kid and you still worry about them.

Give your son a big hug!

Oh, I did--to the point that he was like, "Mom...."  He was scared we would be mad at him--such a child-like response.  They never get over thinking they will disappoint.  He will learn when he is a parent.
Of course, that is why you pay those high insurance prices.  A car can be replaced.
I worked too many years in peds critical care and seen too much tragic things not to be grateful that he walked away unscathed.  I guess he gets it from his father.  He rolled a convertible about 4 years ago with only a few scratches and a broken collar bone and scapula.
I will have to write Lexus though.  They make a safe car.  After seeing pictures, I am amazed he didn't have a mark on him.
