Pay it Forward
Jul 20th, 2007 at 9:15pm

Pay it Forward is a movie from 2000 staring Helen Hunt, Kevin Kline, Bon Jovi and several other people of my generation.  I will tell you the basics of it.  It is a movie about a kid who is given a social class assignment and he decides for his assignment he will take anyone that does him a favour and do 3 favours for OTHER people in return, and demand the same of everyone he does a favour for ..I will not tell you more ...except...have to have a box of kleenex or two around when you watch it.  OH AND YOU MUST WATCH IT!!

After you have seen it you will understand what I am going to write.  A couple of weeks ago I wrote about wanting a snood.  A member of this forum PM'ed me to tell me she had one that their hair was too long for and she would happily send it to me.  I PM'ed her back and said I would love that, how would she like for  payment.  She refused payment and sent it to me!!!  I asked her what I could do for her...and she laughed it off.

A day after 'she' did this for me a saw a member in this forum that wanted something small but could not justify buying it.  I remembered "Pay it Forward" and got it for her...as part of paying back the person who was so kind to me.  I explained to the person I 'paid it forward '  was why I was wanted to do it so that she would not be freaked.

I ask you all to watch "Pay it Forward'.  I believe with the kind hearts I have seen on this site, we can take a fictional story and add some reality to it...

I would like to see people do the 'Pay it Forward' thing on this site...and remember...it can be as simple as helping an old lady across the steet.

BTW, the person that inspired me to think of the movie and to do this thread was Lisabelle.  It was Lisabelle that donated the snood.

Lisabelle, this thread is started thanx to you...and I hope and trust that LL people will tell stories of 'Paying it Forward" because it is a great way to live!!!  I know they will, because the people here are GREAT.

Oh, and I still owe 2 people for what Lisabelle did for me.

I have always tried to help people out in small ways - similar to the "pay it forward" philosophy.  I started when "random acts of kindness" was big.  It is amazing how good you can feel when you do something for someone else in an unexpected way.  A few things I have done i the past few months include:
- paying for the lunch of someone that was having trouble coming up with enough to buy just a small sandwich.  (I upgraded them to a meal with a drink).

- a young girl was having trouble with her hair in the wind - I gave her an extra scrunchie I always keep in my handbag.

- shared my grocery coupons with an elderly couple

- stopped to help a young gal change her flat bike tire and let her use my phone to cal her boyfriend to let him know he didn't have to get off work to come get her.

- gave up my aisle seat on the plan to allow a family to be able to sit together.

I always hope that the people I do little things for will in turn do something for someone else.  But in any case, I feel better about myself for helping others.

Here's another challege...... see if you can do one small thing to make a stranger's life better each day for a week.   You will be amazed at how you will feel at the end of the week.

Hey, I was going through Paul's vhs movies earlier(alphabetizing, actually) and I noticed that he has a copy of 'Pay It Forward'... too bad we no longer have a VCR...... It didn't work quite properly, so he took it apart to see if he could fix it. It was something permanently broken, though... so we now have MORE broken VCR parts... LOL

When I can get around to it, i'll go find a cheap VCR and watch it!

JD, just because some of us choose not to respond doesn't mean we don't agree with the message, or don't practice kindness every day of our lives.

Point taken Trisha.  I guess what I was hoping for was that people would tell what someone did for them and what they did (even as a pay it forward).  I think that sometimes hearing that other people do good things, inspires others to do it.  Do you see what I am saying?  It is not what you do...but that you do something inspires others.

Responses on this board can be sporatic, especially when you take into consideration the international membership we have.   We probably have an 8 hour time difference for many of the posters and then you have to take into account if someone logs on in the morning or only in the evening.

In any case, doing something good for someone else should be a natural action.  Extraordinary acts of kindness do deserve special attention.
