I love music in general but heavy metal is my favorite and I am happy to see I am not the only one here Cool

10.  System Of A Down

Others I like include:  AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Alice In Chains, Anthrax, Audioslave, Barnabas, Barren Cross, Black Sabbath, Bloodgood, Blue Oyster Cult, Cannibal Corpse, Creed, Deep Purple, Def Leppard, Deliverance, Dio, Fight, Godsmack, Guns N' Roses, Helloween, Halloween, Jimi Hendrix, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Leviticus, Linkin Park, Marilyn Manson, Mercyful Fate, Mortification, Motley Crue, My Dying Bride, Nirvana, Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, Queensryche, Rammstein, Rush, Saint, Sepultura, Six Feet Under, Soulfly, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Tourniquet, Twisted Sister, Van Halen, Velvet Revolver, Whie Zombie, Rob Zombie, ZZ Top, Echoes Of Eternity, Otep, Fireball Ministry, Lamb Of God, Hatebreed, Killswitch Engage, Slipknot, Gwar, Type O Negative, Mushroomhead,  In This Moment, P.O.D. and Manowar.

I found out Ozzy is coming to our state (Montana) for the first time but the tickets are $125 so we are not going to be going to the concert Cry

It is going to be in Billings Nov. 2nd. which is a four hour drive one way so we would be paying for tickets, gas and food and whatever else so it's really not in our budget Sad

I know I will kick myself later but I guess that is how things go sometimes Roll Eyes

Currently, I'll put my music in the following order:

1. Psychodelic
2. Hard acid rock from the late 60's
3. Real Bluegrass from the south. NOT what country has become lately.
4. Decent folk music.
5. Alternative (I find some of this new stuff pretty good.)

On Wedensdays, I listen to an on-line classics show with Johnny P. Lovetrain out of South Florida U. He plays a request from 'Roadrat from St. Louis' or 'Dave from St' Louis' every week in the 10:00 CDT hour.

You may also find a studio portrait painted by your's truly on his sites.

I do not like Rap or most Disco. I like that Yvonne Ellerman (sp) song from the disco era, though. Her voice is good enough to make even disco plalatable.

I am listening to Dark Passion Play for the second time this morning and so far I like The Poet And The Pendulum the best but Master Passion Greed is pretty good too.
I usually like the heaviest songs the best at first then the more I listen to a CD the more I like the other songs.

I do like this CD a lot and their new vocalist is pretty good Cool

For people new to heavy metal or even if you have listened to it for years I recommend you watch the movie Metal A Headbanger's Journey.

I bought it used and after I watched it I was surprised that I actually learned a few things I did not know.

The thing I learned the most is how many generes there are in heavy metal starting in the late 60's.

I bought the collector's edition of Dark Passion Play and the bonus track Reach (Amaranth Demo Version) is a very cool song Cool

I am listening to the second disc right now which is orchestral versions which are basically instrumental versions of the first disc.
I like most instrumental songs (such as Pink Floyd's One Of These Days, Edgar Winter's Frankenstein, etc.) and the versions on disc two are pretty good Cool

Actually, listening to the songs without the vocals reminds me of Therion's music Cool

And while I am talking about Nightwish, I also bought  End Of An Era which is 2 CD's and 1 DVD of live music but I have not listened/watched it yet.

Jerry, you certainly do buy a lot of music. I own only about 10 CD's and maybe 15 to 20 LP's. My wife brought her collection of about 100 45RPM's with her but there isn't too much good in that pile. I'm pretty narrow minded on what I'll buy.

Remember Ort. from Athens Ga.? He was a big 45 collector.

Dark Passion Play is great. My favorite song is Sahara (it's irresistible), Master Passion Greed and Meadows of Heaven are my other favorites of the moment- but when I start listening to DPP, I don't skip any songs.

I have the instrumental version as well and really like it. In fact, I think I prefer instrumental versions of Amaranth and Whoever Brings the Night to the normal version. The orchestrations of these songs are so good.

I did not know Headbangers Ball was on MTV until the late 80's and I would watch it religiously in the early 90's and was very dissapointed to find out it was not on any more.

Then I found out it was brought back on MTV2 but my wife and I only had basic cable so we did not get MTV2 Cry

But, over a year ago we did get digital cable and now we do get MTV2 and I have been watching Headbangers Ball as much as I can.  When I can not watch it I will record it onto DVD discs and watch it the next morning or later Cool

It is a good way for me to hear songs I might not hear anywhere else and they play a lot of the heavy metal I do enjoy including some classic metal like older Iron Maiden.

Does anybody else here watch and enjoy Headbangers Ball?

Oh yea, if you have not seen it and are interested in watching it, it comes on Saturday nights at 11pm or midnight (Eastern time)

These are three of the music books I have where I have learned about bands even though the internet is probably the best way to do that now.

But what is interesting is that the middle book does not have the band Korn in it Shocked

Korn were the innovators of the rap/metal genre so I am surprised they are not in the Innovators section or even in that book at all.
Any fan of Korn knows they are as metal as metal can be.  Listen to the CD Untouchables and tell me they are not heavy metal Roll Eyes

Well, I guess they have their reasons for not putting them in the book but I will never figure out why Shocked

I am very sorry if I might have angered or upset you but the reason I said that is because The Encyclopedia Of Heavy Metal and The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia Of Rock & Roll do have Korn in them so I just think it is interesting that a book with the title 'The Definitive Guide' would not have them in it.

It is a great book and I have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it so far and I don't usually fork over $20 or more for a book.

Another interesting thing is that the band Head East is not in The Rolling Stone Encyclopdia in the first, secord or third editions Roll Eyes   I know a guy who hates them even though I do like them but I guess everyone does not have the same tastes in music but sometimes I wonder why a person hates a particular group?  Just like another guy on another forum hates the band Creed because he claims they lack talent but even if they might lack talent I still like their music.

Um, OK Embarrassed

I have been a Korn fan since I heard their song Here To Stay on the radio which was edited of course.  So I bought the Untouchables and have been hooked ever since.

I love their song Right Now because that is how I feel when I am in a very bad mood.

I take it you do not like Korn or what Huh

For those of you who like Heavy Metal Music:

Have you ever heard of Sirenia? Very good, screaming, but singing as well.

Also a *fantastic* band. Apocolytpica. I got to see these guys in Denver. They are from Finland, four cellists. They cover some metallica, pantera and a few others, and they have their own stuff as well. It is a great way to listen to metallica around people who might be offended by some harder forms of music. I LOVE the cello, it's my favorite instrument, too bad I played the violin.

I am not really familiar with Sirenia but I have heard of Apocolytica.

If you like symphonic heavy metal I consider Therion to be the best but the newest Epica and Nightwish are great too Cool

If people are offended by harder forms of music they should stick in some ear plugs or go elsewhere Roll Eyes

Embarrassed  I did forget

Here are the bands from the Progressive, Gothic and Symphonic Metal catagory from the Metal The Definitive Guide:

After Forever
Dream Theater
Epica
Evergrey
Fates Warning
Kamelot
Labyrinth
Lacuna Coil
Moonspell
Nightwish
Paradise Lost
Rhapsody
Symphony X
Theatre Of Tragedy
Threshold
Tristania
Type O Negative
Within Temptation

From that list I am familiar with:

Dream Theater
Epica
Fates Warning
Kamelot
Lacuna Coil
Moonspell
Nightwish
Theatre Of Tragedy
Type O Negative
Within Temptation

I have to admit I thought I knew a lot about all kinds of heavy metal but I might know maybe half of it Shocked
There are so many bands I still have not even heard of and I am finding out all kinds of things about the bands and artists I do know.

Tristania is very similar to Sirenia. And i LOVE Type O-Negative! They do the coolest cover of Summer Breeze!

I should have known it but I figured out that the reason Korn and other bands such as Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Godsmack, Coal Chamber, System Of A Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park and P.O.D. (Payable On Death) are catagorized as nu metal bands Embarrassed

I know some people who hate and will not listen to Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and System Of A Down and the one thing they all have in common is the nu metal label Tongue

I enjoy all of those bands and any others which might  be labeled as nu metal because to me it is just music which has a good sound and if people don't like it they can listen to whatever they might enjoy Roll Eyes

And, I would bet the author of that book is not a nu metal fan and that is why the only two bands that are in the book are Biohazard under the catagory of neo-metal and Kittie which are in the NWOAHM (New Wave Of American Heavy Metal) catagory.

I found out that my favorite of favorites Metallica are finally going to be releasing a CD/album titled Death Magnetic sometime in September Cool

Their last was the E.P.  Some Kind Of Monster which was back in 2004.

I have been a fan of theirs since the late 80's so I have experienced all of their changes (except when they kicked Dave Mustaine out and lost Cliff Burton in that horrible bus accident) in music and it would be nice if they went back to their roots of pure heavy thrash metal but if that is all they did I suppose they could be labeled as boring.

Anyway, I am excited that they are going to finally have something new and I will probably pre-order the CD on Amazon.com or something Cool

Yup, I've heard a few samples from Death Magnetic and they sound pretty decent (nice to see them doing some punk-inspired tunes again). But...we shall see. Lord knows that their career doesn't need another St. Anger.  Tongue

But, since Metallica is my favorite of favorites I would probably like them if they did 60's music which would be very strange for them Roll Eyes
