Cold Weather Biking
Oct 23rd, 2007 at 7:35am

Okay, I know BB can probably answer this one, but there might be some other people who can too.  How do you bike in cold weather?

I used to love biking, worked up to 15 miles per day before I went overseas, but biking in Saudi Arabia was illegal for women (seriously!) so obtaining a bike took awhile, and by the time I got one, I was out of shape.  Biking in the mountains was a trick as well.  In Egypt, well, first of all, women just DON'T BIKE in Egypt, and second, there was no way I was riding a bike in Cairo traffic.

So now I'm back in the states, my bike and I are reunited, and my hubby got it working.  So I went for a ride yesterday morning.  But here is the problem.  I breathed in cold air so fast it triggered my bronchitis.  I didn't ride this morning because I knew it would be worse.  But I want to get back into riding before work.  What do you guys do?

Biking in cold weather can be a challenge.  If the temps are below 50F, I will wear a running hoodie with the hood up to wear under my helmet.  I have windproof gloves to keep the fingers warm.  A windproof vest or jacket is also a must.  I always wear wrap-around glasses to keep the wind away from my eyes, but it is even more important with the cold air.  Warm tights/pants with warm socks are also a must.  I have booties I put over my biking shoes to help keep my feet warm (and dry - if it is raining).

As for breathing in the cold air - You can get a face mask that helps with this.  My hoodie is one that I can pull up over my mouth and nose so I don't have a face mask.  My lowest biking temp so far has been 35F.  I'm a wimp.  Grin

Biking the in the cold can be exhilarating - go for it!

It wasn't less than 50, probably, and I was shaking so hard at times I had a balance problem!  This Texan doesn't do cold.  Of course the wind chill was probably closer to 40, and I was in shorts and a sweatshirt.  I'm going to Academy for a wind suit.

The small hill at the end of my street warmed me up, but it also caused me to huff and puff and all of a sudden my bronchitis cough was back and my chest is still bothering me today.

I'm thinking I may ride in the afternoons or evenings until I'm in a little better shape and don't have to suck air like that.

I use 60F as the cut off for wearing shorts.  I have some lightweight running tights that I wear when the temps dip below 60.  I dress in layers, recognizing that wind is the major issue when biking.  That's where the windbreaker comes in.

I understand about the breathing.  I'm prone to bronchitis - and if I over exert, I too get a cough that is hard to get rid of. If you are still coughing, try breathing moist warm air.
