Chapter 1

As the sun rose over the horizon, Jonathan entered Prince Edward’s room and looked toward the bed.  All he could see was a tuft of red hair sticking up from under the covers.  His highness had had another rough night, he ascertained.  Jonathan laid out the princes clothing and made ready a basin of water. As he poured a chalice of wine, a groan came from under the covers.
“I gather my lord did not sleep well?” Jonathan said quietly.
A large befreckled hand came out from under the dark blue coverlets and pushed them back. The prince emerged, and pushed his long red hair out his eyes and squinted in the morning light.
“Nay, I did not.” Edward groaned.
Sitting up, he took a chalice from Jonathan and drained it.  The wine refreshed him and placing down the chalice, he pulled off his nightshirt and stretched, flexing the muscles of his five foot eleven frame.  Freckles ran down his strong shoulders and arms, his left bicep were adorned with a tattoo of a falcon in flight with two letter A’s interlocked below it.  Jonathan dressed him as usual in his favorite outfit, brown caussess and a black tunic.  Edward stood quietly as his aid fussed with his clothes; his thoughts were of the dream he had. He was in his armor upon a tall cliff, a dragon so large it blacks out the sky descends on him, and he fights it mercilessly but his sword cannot damage its black flesh.  It strikes at him like a snake wounding him mortally. And then it vanishes leaving him to die while he could still here it mocking roar.  There must be a meaning to these dreams he pondered as he walked up to his dressing table.  He looked in the mirror and rubbed his chin.  The ginger red stubble made him look older then his twenty-four years. Perhaps he should let it grow, he thought.  His green eyes where blood shot and his skin was pale making the freckles on his nose and cheeks stand out boldly.  Splashing water on his face he took his razor and worked away at his beard.  There he thought, all done, as he finished up.  He brushed his hair back and watched two long bangs fall into his eyes; he smiled as he saw the refection of a young boy at the door.
“Edward!”  The little lad cried and ran up to him.  The prince knelt and lifted the boy in his arms and held him tight.
“How are you today little master?”
“We are here to see Kira” the boy squealed.
“Oh and so you shall” Edward winked.

Chapter 1 ....

He placed the boy down and looked to see the fair and lovely Alyssa. She wore a white dress trimmed in gold that hugged her hips and breasts softly, her light brown hair was unbound and fell to her waist.  There eyes met and the she smiled.  Edward walked up her he and took her hand.
“My lady.” he whispered brushing his lips across her fingers. Alyssa blushed as the prince embraced her.
“Your highness.” she cooed tenderly.  Edward turned to her lips and brushed them gently.  He gazed into her blue eyes, and lifting her chin, kissed her passionately.  Edward lost himself in her embrace; he did not care who saw them.  Alyssa clung to him trembling she had missed his kiss, missed the feel of his arms around her.   Little Anders looked up at them and tugged on Edwards’s tunic.
“Will you be my new father someday?”
Alyssa and Edward looked down at Anders and then at each other.  Tears rose in Alyssa's eyes, she smiled, wiping them away.  Edward took a breath and knelt down to Anders.
“Would you like that?”
“Yes, the seven year old stated, please marry my mummy”
Alyssa bit her lip, she had been sixteen when she wed Lord Peters, and he had not been interested in her, as he was more inclined to gambling and wenching.  When they moved from their manor to the royal castle Alyssa met Prince Edward, the youngest of King Steven’s sons.  He was kind and handsome with an outgoing personality.  He was different then other royals and lords she had ever met.  The next two years were spent innocently together, but in that time they found themselves in love with each other and that love grew.  One evening Lord Peters was found dead. He had been murdered for his extensive gambling debts.  Edward wasted no time and asked Alyssa for her hand.  She accepted him and that night Edward took her as his own. He found her to still be a maiden but he was not surprised, he knew Peters had no interest in Alyssa save her holdings of which he was squandering away at the card table. Alyssa willing gave herself to Edward, and his tender passion. There love no neither bounds, nor precautions.  Alyssa father, Lord Sarson, upon hearing of their engagement, forbade it and would not sign their betroval papers.  He did not trust Edward, as he believed that the prince had Lord Peter’s murdered.  The couple was heart broken, but Edward persisted and lobbied for Alyssa to stay at the royal castle, as her father wanted her to be sent to a convent.  King Steven was not unaware of their goings on, and thought that the allegations on his son were slanderous as the real murderer, a moneylender, was found and hung. Hence the king allowed Alyssa to stay at the royal court under his protection which further infuriated lord Sarson.  Edward was relieved that his father had allowed Alyssa to stay, as she was now pregnant with his child. He would see her in secret and comfort her. She promised that when her time came she would send him a message.  The night that call came Edward paced his room, he wanted to be with Alyssa in her time of need but to do so openly would destroy Alyssa’s reputation and brand his son a bastard.  Jonathan kept him informed on how she was faring, as it was a long night. As the dawn slowly lit up the sky Jonathan came back with the message that she was safely delivered of a son, Edward sank to his knees and thanked god. He prayed that one day he could call this child his own.  Later, when all had settled down, he climbed down to Alyssa’s chamber window. Peeking in, he beheld a sight that warmed his heart. Alyssa was sitting up in her bed, nursing the little babe at her breast.  Upon seeing Edward she dismissed the servants.  Once alone, the prince embraced his little family.
“My son” he whispered as he stoked the infant’s tiny hand.
“Yes, he has your green eyes and no doubt your red hair” Alyssa cooed softy.
Composing himself Edward took a breath.
“Are you all right Alyssa?  I am sorry for the pain I have caused you to endure.”  Alyssa just smiled at him, their son fussed and turned his eyes to them.
“All the pain in the world was worth this beautiful child, thank you Edward”
The prince gazed at the child.  Only a few hours old yet the child had his expression, his eyes.
“My lady, I love you and I want to wed you…” Alyssa looked away.
“Yes but…he will not allow us…”
“Alyssa, you father cannot stop me from loving you and our child”.
 She turned to him.
“Nor can he stop me, my Lord”
“No one can” Edward breathed and kissed her softy on the lips.  Alyssa slowly lifted the babe into his father arms.  The prince held his son close to his heart.
“My son, I accept you as mine, he whispered…Prince Anders Carl Thernhard. We will be a family one day.  He looked up at Alyssa. “I swear it”
Edward composed himself and smiled.
“Come, you wanted to see Kira. I believe I saw her up on the ramparts.”  Jonathan opened the window as Edward fitted a large leather glove on the little boy’s hand.
“Now hold you hand up high”
Edward whistled three short toots.  Down from the sky swooped a majestic blue falcon, she flew into the window and landed on Anders’s gloved hand.
The boy smiled at Edward and looked at the bird with stars in eyes.
“Kira.” he said as he watched her beautiful golden eyes.  The peregrine falcon looked around the room, and seeing Alyssa, flew over to her.

Chapter 1.....

Putting up her arm the bird landed delicately on her wrist.
“Hello Kira.” Alyssa smiled and stroked the white feathers on the birds’ neck.
“She has always been attached to you” Edward said.  He marveled at how the bird was careful not to scratch her wrist with it talons.
“Aww mum, I wanted to hold her!”  Anders whined.  Alyssa looked at Kira.
“Go to him” she whispered.  The bird turned and flew to Anders.  She watched as Edward showed Anders how to hold Kira and fasten and unfasten her tethers.  Then he had him feed her a tidbit of rabbit meat.  Edward showed all the love and attention of a good father, it warmed Alyssa heart to watch them together.  She had made sure Anders had good contact with Edward.  For the last six years the prince had always been there for her and their son.  The boy was still deemed as Lord Peters, something King Steven reinforced for their safety.  But now as she watched them, their resemblance to each other was unmistakably that of father and son.  Anders turned and smiled at her, his green eyes shined over his freckled cheeks.  Edward mussed his red hair.
“There, now you little more about falconry” Kira peeped and unfolding her blue bared wings, flew off threw the window.
“Thank you” Anders looked up at Edward with affection.
“Soon I will teach you how to weld a sword”
“Can I become a knight? Anders gushed.
If you practice and follow the Code you can be anything you want my…” Edward stopped and kneeling scooped the boy up into his arms. My son one day I promise you will be so much more then a knight and then you will have the father you want. I swear on my life…Placing the child down Edward turned to Alyssa.
“Would my lady care for a ride on this fine morning? Jonathan will look after Anders for us.”
Alyssa bit her lip; it had been so long since she was able to be alone with Edward.  The prince walked up to her and took her hand; love and longing warmed his green eyes that still held his question to her heart.  To be with him as we should as man and women held by no bonds only love.
“Aye my lord.” she whispered looking away.  Edward tightened his grip on her hand.
He turned to his aide.
“Jonathan…?”
The young man was entertaining Anders with a magic trick.
“Aye my lord I will care for him, not to worry.”  Jonathan had long since known of his prince’s plight.  He too thought it was unfair that Edward could not marry Alyssa.  He pledge himself to helping them as best he could. Jonathan did not think badly of Edward, rather he admired his lord for his strong devotion to his family.  At times, he would find the prince alone in his room, his heart full of sorrow and his head drunk on wine.  He would tell Jonathan of his pain of being separated from his Lady and son.  Jonathan would comfort him with the thought that there was always a chance that Alyssa's father would allow their marriage.  Every year Edward would go to Lord Sarsen and plead with him to wed Alyssa.  But each time the answer was no.
Alyssa went to Anders and kissed him on his forehead.
“Mummy is going out for a while, be a good boy for Master Jonathan.”
“I will.” Anders said and reached up his arms to her.  Alyssa lifted him up into her arms and held him close.  She sighed softy as she felt the warmth of Edwards’s arms around them.  Jonathan watched them from the window and then turned and looked out onto the ramparts.  He knew that night his lord would be deep into his cups trying to drown his sorrow.

Chapter 1.....

Setting off from the castle on separate horses, they rode across the countryside.  The spring air filled their lungs and rose their desire for each other.  Edward looked over at Alyssa, his gaze told her more then any words could.  They were free if only for that afternoon.  They reined in their horses sharply and Alyssa slide from her mount and climbed into the saddle before Edward.  He embraced her tight and spurred his horse hard.  Desperately he muttered passionate words into her ear as they arrived at there trysting spot.  It was a small grove of chestnut trees, safe and hidden from the road.  A little brook bubbled over an outcrop of rock on the woodland hill.  Goliath, Edwards Friesian stallion, tossed his head as they slide from his back and into each other’s arms.  They held each other silently drinking in the ones of their embrace.
“Alyssa.” Edward’s deep voice droned in her ear, his warm breath sent anticipation threw her heart.
Alyssa looked up at him and traced her finger over his freckled cheek. His thick eyebrows lowered as he drew in his breath and trembled.
“Oh, I have so missed your touch.”  He whispered.
Tenderly she ran her finger over his mouth.  Edward gently caught her finger between his soft lips.  Alyssa trembled with desire.
“And I have missed you, my man.”
Slowly she pulled her hand away and watched his green eyes brighten.  Taking her hand Edward led her under the chestnut trees and kneeling untied the bow on her stays as Alyssa ran her hand over his belts. Slowly they undressed each other; piece by piece there garments fell around them.  Edward trembled as he beheld his lady; his large hands caressed her soft skin gently as Alyssa ran her hands down his shoulders pushing back his long hair.  They looked into each other eyes, these were the moments they lived for and they savored this time.

Chapter 2

King Steven sat with his son, Prince Michael, in his royal chambers.  They where going over matters of state as Michael had just been made Duke of Storuman County to the north.
“They are a remote township my son but, I trust you will make a good impression on them.” The king smiled, signing his daily documents.
“Of course father, however, I shall be away for sometime.   Something tells me I should not go so soon.” His violet eyes gave away his fears.  Steven studied him.
“What is it Michael?”
“I don’t know, he sighed and looked at his hands, I have a bad feeling…” Steven squared his jaw, his second to youngest son was known for his intuitions.  They say it is because he is an albino that he has this foresight. Steven put his hand on his son’s shoulder.
“Do not worry, nothing will happened, and if it does, we will be ready.” They turned as Queen Gwen walked into the room; she had brought them some food.
“Lunchtime already?” Steven smiled putting down his quill.
Gwen laughed, “You boys have been so busy, I knew you needed a break.” She put down the platter and looked at them. “Pray have any of you seen Edward today?” Steven looked to he window.
“Nay, but I did see his falcon fly by not to long ago.”
Michael looked at is parents, they know where he is, we all do.  Perhaps these premonitions I feel will help my brother somehow, because it seem no one else can. He shot a look at his father, or will.

Edward and Alyssa rested in each other’s arms.
Alyssa ran her fingers through deep red curls on his strong chest, she did not want to leave his embrace; she looked at his strong freckled arms and at the tattoo he wore.  Prince or commoner, she did not care for this moment he was the husband she longed for.  No inhibitions, no hiding or acting as if they did not love each other, only bliss. She passed her finger over the cleft in his chin, our son has a cleft as well, it was only a little dimple now, but as he grew it would be deep like his father’s she pondered.  She looked up into his green eyes and saw tears in his gaze.  Alyssa knew, as always, that they had to part soon.  Edward took her hand and brought her fingers to his lips.  Slowly they rose and held each other.  Edward leaned down and putting his forehead to hers ran his hand through her soft brown hair.
“Alyssa you must hate me, he said weakly, you don’t deserve this torture.”
“Edward… I love you, I could never hate the man of my heart and father of child.” Edward trembled at her words, but for how long will she endure?
As they dressed Alyssa sat and tied her stays; at her feet were Edward’s belts, she picked them up.  The prince had a long dagger given to him by his nephew, Prince Gustaf.  She looked at the scabbard, it was new, and there was a relief of a lady holding a falcon.  It was an image of herself!  She walked up to the prince and drew his belts around his waist.  Edward smiled as he watched chinched them tight.  She held the dagger and looked at it. Edward smiled and took it from her hand.
“I had it made in honor of you and Kira, the two ladies I love.”
Goliath walked over to them and nickered softy.
“Even he knows it’s time to go.” Alyssa whispered.  Edward grimaced and looked away; composing himself he turned to her and held out his hand.
“My lady…” his voice shook as she took his hand.  Silently they mounted the horse and road off toward home.  They stopped were Alyssa had left her mare.  As she turned to slip off Goliath, Edward held her fast to his chest
“Nay…do not leave my embrace.” he sighed deeply.
Alyssa’s heart hurt, she wanted to say with him, to never have to part with man she loved.  Each time it became harder to leave his warm embrace, but she gripped her nerve and swallowed her tears.
“Courage my love…”

Chapter 2....

The sound of approaching hoof beats sent them into a panic.  Alyssa slid off Goliath and sprinting to her mare mounted her.   She looked back at Edward as she spurred the horse forward.  Edward tugged back on the reins as Goliath lurched forward in pursuit of Alyssa, causing the horse to rear up high.  As Alyssa galloped off out of sight he turned in misery to see who was coming up behind him.  Lord Sarson accompanied by a knight, trotted up to Edward and slowed to a stop.
“Your highness.” he said and bowed his head.
“Lord Sarson.” Edward said between clenched teeth.  If they had caught all would have been lost.  His beloved Alyssa would be put in a convent and his son would be sent to Sarson’s manor to brought up by him.
“Pray, are you out hunting as I saw your bird not to long ago?”
Edward looked up to see Kira sailing on an up draft.  She turned and tucking her wings shot down from the sky.  As she touched down in a field her claws clasped a rabbit in mid leap.
“Ah, she has got one!” Sarson smiled.  The old man sat back in the saddle and glanced at Edward, a look of self-righteousness filled his expression.  “I am going to the castle to see my grandson, I have brought him a gift, he patted the short sword at his side, I mean for Sir Carl here to teach him swordplay”.
The knight nodded to the prince.  Edwards ears burned with anger, he wanted to teacher his son all he needed to know, not this callus and vengeful man’s lackey.  Edward felt the tip of his sword with his foot; the weapon was mounted next to the saddle, as it was too large to wear.  He was given the legendary Drake bane from his father; the six-foot blade seemed to call to him.  He wanted to draw it and end his and Alyssa suffering once and for all.  But he knew this was not the way. Gathering his thoughts he tugged on a glove and whistled for Kira.  The falcon was still consuming her catch and looked up to his call.  Taking to the air she flew up to Edward and landed on his wrist.
“Good day lord Sarson” he said and spurred Goliath into a trot. As he traveled down the road he looked back to see Sarson heading toward the castle.   Spurring his horse hard, Edward tossed Kira forward.  She leapt from his hand and spreading her wings, took to the air.  As they road he urged Goliath faster, his heart felt like a million knives were carving at it at once.  The road became a blur as they raced on; he could hear Kira’s cries high about him. He took the long way around the forest back to the castle trail.  Goliath was at top speed as they reached the castle.  The prince reined him in and rode him to the stables. A Stewart took the sweat soaked stallion from Edward as he detached his sword form the saddle.  In the castles main hall he saw Jonathan.  He strode up to him with Drake bane on his shoulder, his eyes set.
“Where is my son?” he growled in the boy’s ear.
Jonathan set his jaw and adverted his gaze to the stone floor.
“He is in the solar with his mother and grandfather”.
Edward eyes narrowed.
“ I thought as much”.

Chapter 2...

Alyssa sat in the solar with her father and little Anders. She had just made it home when he arrived and changed her dress from the soft white frock to a more demure brown kirtle with a veil to hide her hair.  She watched him play with her son.  He was his grandfather but still, what grandfather would deny his grandchild a father?  He still believed Edward had Peters murdered.  Still it was known he had no love for King Steven and the King did not favor Sarson either, he merely tolerated him.
“So my boy what have you been doing today?”  Sarson asked the lad.
Anders looked up from his new sword.
“ I saw Kira and I got to hold her and feed her” He pulled out a feather from his belt and twirled it in his fingers.  Sarson shot a look at Alyssa.
“That is something we must talk about” He sent the servants from the room.  “Sir Carl, take Anders out to the field and practice with him”.
“Yes my Lord.”
Carl reached for the little boy’s hand, Anders pulled away from him and taking his sword walked out the door with the knight behind him. Alyssa knew what her father was going to say.  He would condemn Edward and tell her he was a tyrant.  She did not know if she could bear to hear his laments.  She could still smell Edward’s scent on her body and feel his hands in her hair.
“I saw Prince Edward with his bird on my way here today…”
“Father I see no harm in him teaching Anders about falconry.  My son is very smart and wants to learn…
“Alyssa you forget he had the father of your child murdered, he is not to be trusted!”  Damn and blast will you not see sense!”  Alyssa’s heart trembled and she clenched her fists.
“I tire of this argument father! When will you learn that Edward is not a tyrant but a good man?”
Taken aback Sarson looked at his daughter.
“If it weren’t for King Steven’s decree you, my dear, would not be here! The old man sighed.  I worry for you safety, I am sorry to cause you pain.”
His words bit at her heart, he knew what pain he was inflecting on her but his pride stood in the way.  He did not want his daughter marrying into the royal family.

Chapter 2...

Outside in the practice area Anders swung his new sword as Sir Carl instructed him in the late afternoon light.  High in the air Kira floated silently on the breeze, she arched right and flew up to an open window in the castle turret.  Edward stood in the window; he leaned on his arm as he watched his son in the field below. He drained off his chalice of wine and looked at Kira as she stood on the stone window still, she peeped and ruffled her feathers.
“My lady, he address the bird, how long must Alyssa and I endure this pain?”  He turned from the window and dashed his chalice hard against the wall.  “Damn you Sarson, damn you!”

Jonathan entered Edwards chamber later that evening.  The room was in a state of disarray.   He noticed his lord’s armor was gone and so was his sword and shield.  Rushing from the room he went down to the stables, Goliath was not in his stall.  The Stewart told him the prince was drunk and mumbled something about the witch of Gotland.  The young man held a bloody bandaged to his head; no doubt he had made the mistake of getting in the princes way.  Jonathan tried to think who would know of the witch?  Family lore had stated that prince Michael had met with the sorceress long ago.  He went back to the castle and found Prince Michael in the library.
“My prince” he bowed catching his breath.  Michael was at a desk reading when the young aid rushed into the room he looked up and eyed him.
“What has happened?”
“Your highness, Prince Edward has gone to find the witch of Gotland, he is well into his cups and dare I say dangerous.” Michael stood and controlled his panic.
“We must find him.” he called to his squire who was sitting at door. Carl, get my horse ready!   Come Jonathan we will find him” And he thought, I hope we are not too late.

Chapter 2....

Up on the North road Edward pulled the reins tighter and scanned the dark landscape. His eyesight and judgment impaired with drink and sorrow.
“Which way?” he growled to himself. Goliath chewed his bit and tossed his head as Edward wheeled him around. The sun was almost set and wind blew thought the trees as darkness began to settle on him.  He was not sure were the witch’s lair was but he knew he had to see her.  She could put an end to his torment.  He was after all a man, but he felt less of one without his lady and child.  Edward heard someone coming down the road, his anger mounted and he drew his sword. The other rider pulled up to him sharply and drew back his hood,it was Prince Micheal.
“Edward, why are you out here?”  The prince lowered his sword and looked away.
“Brother I…I wanted to find the witch, perhaps she can…”
“Nay, you are in no state to see her” Michael stated calmly.  Edward looked over his brother’s shoulder, Jonathan was with him. The worry on his aids face sobered him some.
Michael took hold of Goliath’s bridle.
“Come, let us go back home” Edward sat silently in his defeat, he rested his hands on Drake Bane as his tears fell quietly.  Michael had always adored his little brother; they had a very strong bond more then even the twins Anna and George had.  It hurt Michael to see Edward in pain, denied of his family and his right.  He looked back at Edward; my brother is a shadow of a man.  Perhaps the witch can help him, but for now I must get him back home.

Chapter 2...

In her chamber Alyssa sat on her bed and watched her son sleep.  How peaceful he looked, his day was very full and he was no trouble to put down tonight.  Soon he would be old enough for his own bed.  Alyssa turned to see Ing’Marie standing before her with a chalice of wine. The old women had been her lady in waiting since she was small, and she knew as Alyssa did what her lady now had to do.  Alyssa took the chalice and gazed into it, reaching into a box on her nightstand she took out a small blue vile.  As she added it contents drop by drop to the wine she wondered how more times must she drink this foul brew?  The tincture had been given to her from the midwife who delivered Anders.  Her instructions were simple; three drops into a chalice of wine after the act of love will end any chance of conceiving.  Placing the vile down she brought the chalice to her lips; tears filled her eyes as she drank.  Edward, she thought, I so want to give you more children but for now I know we must wait.  Finishing her cup she looked up at Ing’Marie through her tears.  The old women sat next to her and put her arm around her.
“Now, now my lamb, do not cry” Alyssa turned, the chalice tumbled to the floor as she sobbed into the old women’s shoulder.

Chapter 3

Slowly Edward stirred the light from the window stabbed at his eyes painfully.  Groaning he put his hand over his face.
“How much did I drink?”
“Quite a lot my lord” Jonathan answer quietly.  Squinting Edward sat up holding his head.
“Does my lady know what happened last night?”
“No, she does not know that you got drunk, almost killed a Stewart and when riding out into the night.”
“My god, the prince rubbed his face, I am sorry Jonathan.  Will the Stewart be alright?”
“Well he sure did get his ear boxed pretty hard. I will get you some breakfast my lord.”  Jonathan turned and left the room. Edward sat on the side of the bed, his head was pounding and his mouth was dry.  He looked over at his armor and sword, he wondered how in his state last night did he get his armor on, it all seem a blur now and he felt like a fool.  He had wanted to see the witch and ask her help.  Seeing Sarson did not help his mood.  The worst would be Alyssa to see him in one of his drunken rages.  Grabbing a shirt he dressed himself.  Looking in the mirror he fought back the rising gorge in his throat, perhaps I should skip breakfast he thought.  He walked over to the window and opened it.  Below he could see lord Sarson riding off with his knight.
“Good riddance” he growled to himself.   The warm morning breeze made his head feel a little clearer and he stood and took a deep breath.  Jonathan came in with his breakfast.  Edward looked at it and grimaced.
“Perhaps the coffee my lord?”  Edward took the cup and sat down at his desk.  He went into pigeonholes and pulled out his maps.  He knew that one of them pointed out the area of the witches’ lair, his traced his finger along the north road till it came to the junction of castle rock.  There was drawn an odd symbol in red.
“You will not find her there…” a voice said from behind him.  Edward turned to see his brother Michael.
“Good morrow” Edward said holding his head.
“Good morrow brother” Michael took off his sword and pulling up a chair sat next to him.  Edward reached for his coffee; the bitter liquid was the time-tested cure for a hang over but he thought it would serve a better use as metal polish. Michael turned his violet eyes to Edward.
“To find the witch you must first want to find her” The younger prince frowned and put down his cup.
“Of course I want to find her Michael, you know more then anyone why I need her consult.”
“This I know Edward, but remember it is a dangerous affair, her advise is sound however beware her price.”  Michael mind went back nine years ago when he went to seek the witch, she had helped him with his quest, however, and he was nearly killed by her hellhounds he still bore the scars on his shoulder from there attack.  Edward looked away to the window.
“I will pay her price brother, even if it is in blood” Michael sighed deeply his brothers pain would never be comforted, he had to help him.  Reaching into his cloak he pulled out an old tattered map and handed it to him.
“This is the true map to the witches lair, be careful and keep alert.” Edward took the map and put his hand on his brother shoulder.
“My family thanks you brother” Michael’s stomach turned, what was he doing?  On one had he was helping his brother find peace, on the other he could be signing his death warrant.

Chapter 3...

Alyssa sat in her rooms working at her embroidery.  Anders was in school for the afternoon and she filled this quite time with her stitchery.  An accomplished embroider and dressmaker she worked on the five-foot tapestry with skillful fingers.  It was a commission from the king for the throne room; it was picture depicting the royal crest in a shield surrounded by all the names of the royal family.  Under each princes name was the name of there children.  Alyssa looked at the empty space under Edwards’s name.  She knew one day she would place Anders name there and perhaps her own with his, but for now it remained blank.  A knock at the door woke her from her thoughts.  It was Ing’Marie; she handed her a message.  Alyssa read it and grabbing her skirts ran out the door and down to the stables.  The message was from Edward. He wanted to meet her at Goliath’s stall. His shaky handwriting set her nerves racing.  Once in the stables she made her way to the stall.  Goliath swung his large head over the door and nickered softly.  The horse was dressed in battle armor; the golden plate’s extended from his nose down his long neck. Taking a breath she open the stall door and gasped, Edward turned to her as he adjusted the saddle.  He was clad in golden bronze armor of exquisite detail; his breastplate was fitted with the coat of arms of Gotland on a black field.  She had never seen him in his armor before, the sight took her breath away and yet it freighted her.
“Edward, I got your message, where are you going?”
“Alyssa, I believe I have found an answer to our problems. I am going to see the Witch of Gotland, her council is wise perhaps…”
Alyssa eyes flashed with panic.
“Nay, Edward please…”
“I know it is dangerous but I am prepared to kill what ever beast she tests me with”. Gently he embraced her and looked down into her eyes. “I would do anything to secure our happiness”.
“I believe you my lord, pray take care. Anders and I cannot live without you” Edward pulled her closer.
“Nor could I live without you both, and that is why I must go” he sighed deeply into her ear.  Wiping her tears Alyssa backed away as Edward swung into the saddle and donned his helm.  He turned to her and gripped her hand.
“I will return to you”
As Edward rode out of the stables and onto the green Alyssa sent out a pray that he would be safe and return to her and there son.

Anders was finished with his studies for the day and taking his pony he and Jonathan road back to the castle.  His teacher, brother Svenson, had said he was doing well and that would soon be quite accomplished at his Latin.  His seventh birthday was almost upon him.  At that time he would put in for a squireship. There were a few knights who had shown and interest in him.  His grandfather was now having him trained regularly by Sir Carl.  Anders traveled the south road to the castle. On his left, in-between a strip of forest, was the north road that went to the countryside.  He glanced over and pulled his pony to a stop.  Jonathan wheeled his horse around to see what had distracted the boy. Coming down the south road was a knight on a large black horse, his armor shined in the afternoon light; the crest of the royal family blazed boldly on his chest.  Upon his head was an incredible helm: the visor was the beak of an eagle, long wings arched up high from the sides of this golden masterpiece.  Anders stared as the knight road by, the horse was covered in battle armor that matched the knights golden suit. It’s big hoofs guided in gold stepped proudly.  Strapped to the saddle was a massive sword.  It was Edward!  Anders had always admired Prince Edward, they looked alike in a way and the young boy would sometime wish he were his father.  But now to see him as knight enthralled the young lad.  The cry of the falcon caused Anders to look up, Kira swooped down and landed on Edwards outstretched arm.
“Come lad” Jonathan beckoned him.  Still looking back Anders nudged his pony forward.
“That was …was Prince Edward” the child gasped.  “I have seen all of the kings knights but none truly looked as magnificent as he!"

Chapter 3...

Edward looked through the side of his visor.  He had seen Anders and Jonathan watching him, he looked at Kira, she turned her blue head sideways as if asking him a question. Pulling Goliath to a stop he turned to her.
“Yes my lady falcon, that was my son.  No doubt he wonders why I am out here.” Gently he stoked the feathers on her neck. Raising his armored hand Kira spread her wings and flew off into the sky.  Edward proceeded on down the road. His heart was heavy, as he had not been able to say goodbye to his child.  But from the look on the boy’s face he could tell that he admired him even more so now.  He remembered how much pride he felt when he was with Anders, the pride of a father. He looked up ahead, he was coming to the junction marked on the map by St. Johan’s cross. There he would turn off into the Lone Forest. I do this for you Alyssa my Princess, my love and my life and for you my son. The strength of your love will help me prevail over whatever awaits me.

Alyssa sat in her window seat of her bedchamber and wrung her hands nervously.   Edward had gone to see the witch, untold dangers lied before him and she felt helpless and afraid.  Edward meant more then the world to her she, smiled as she remember when they first met.
She had only been at Visborg castle for a week. She and Ing’Marie where in the middle of getting her rooms ready.  Her and Peters manor house was being renovated and the king graciously extended rooms to them in the castle.  Alyssa was a bit overwhelmed; her manor was not as large as the royal castle.  She went to call for a Stewart to help her and Ing’Marie with some heavy furniture when she found herself lost in the castle winding hallways.  After what seems like hours, she found herself in a large gallery.  Every weapon imaginable hung on the walls, in the center stood a young man holding an axe before him. Ginger eyebrows loomed over his closed eyes. Long fiery red hair graced his head and fell beyond his broad shoulders; a strong cleft chin squared off his handsome face. Stripped to the waist his muscles gleamed in the light. She noticed a tattoo on his large bicep.  A patch of red hair curled softy across his broad chest.  Entranced, Alyssa stepped forward. She could see patterns of freckles extend from his face down his neck and across his arms. Suddenly the man whirled and propelled the weapon at a target behind him; it hit dead center.  Alyssa looked at the target then at the young man, his eyes where still shut.  She had never seen such an amazing feat.  A blush ran up her face as she looked at is strong physic, he was not overly tall like most Gotlanders, but well proportioned.  Alyssa felt her burning cheeks; she was staring at this stranger.  Edward raised his head and inhaled deeply, he turned and opening his eyes looked upon her.  He could smell her sweet scent from across the room, but he had no idea the beauty he would behold. She was a delicate creature, with soft blue eyes fringed by the longest lashes he had ever seen. Shyly, she looked at him; her finger thoughtlessly played with a lock her golden brown hair.  A maiden he thought, for sure she must be for the delicate blush on her face gives her away.  But pray who is this lovely creature?  Picking up his shirt he walked up to her.
“My lady, does my sport amuse you?”  Alyssa looked into his gaze and looked away, his green eyes seemed to look into her soul.
“Aye, as I have never seen such skill.” She gave him a quick look to find his eyes still on her.  Edward took her hand slowly into his.
“I am Edward.” he said and bestowed a kiss on her hand that made her tremble.  Never had she felt such tender lips.  She looked up at him and bit her lip.
“Prince… Edward?”
The young man smiled.
“Aye, I do look much like my father, the king.” his voice was deep lull that warmed her heart.
“Aye you do.”
She is lovely indeed Edward thought.  But I must know the name of this sweet bird.
“Alyssa!” a voice called from behind them.  She turned to see Ing’Marie coming down the hall with a Stewart.
“Farewell your highness.” she curtsied. Edward brushed his lips across her hand.
“Farewell lovely bird.”
From that moment on Alyssa’s heart was lost to Edward, so much had happened since their first meeting eight years ago.  She turned to see Anders come into the chamber.
“How was you classes my dear?”  Anders kissed his mother cheek, his eyes shined with excitement.
“Mum, I saw Edward on my way home, he wore the most incredible armor, I have never seen such a knight! One day I shall a knight mother, Edward will be proud of me I promise’.
Tears escaped Alyssa’s eyes as she embraced her son. He sounds so much like his father and his heart is open and innocent to the world.  I wish he could understand and know that Edward is his real father, but for know let him remain his friend.
“He will be so very proud my Anders, so very proud.”

Chapter 4

Edward pasted St. Johan’s cross, the stone monument stood silently as he rode past.  He recalled the story of how Father had proposed to mother on that very spot.  But now the lone marker reminded him of a gravestone in a lone cemetery long neglected.  A feeling of cold and despair pierced his thoughts.  Up head was the road that led to the Lone Forest.  Gripping his nerve he spurred Goliath faster.  As they rounded the turn off the air grew heavy and damp.  He could feel Goliath tremble under him, the forest became darker, and he heard no birds or other signs of life as he went along.  He slowed his horse to stop and pulled out the map.  It was here that he was to enter the forest.  Goliath sidestepped nervously. Edward got him under control and turned him off the road into the dark wood.

Michael sat in his study; grief crossed his face.  He had given his little brother the map and now he was off on his Quest to see the witch.  Still he pondered perhaps she does not exist anymore.  He had postponed his trip to Storuman County; he was too worried about Edward.  He recalled the times when Edward was a child.  Michael was ten years older then Edward, when his mother the Queen was pregnant he had hoped for a little brother and was excited when his father brought him into the room shortly after Edwards birth.  Edward was four when Michael wed his wife Vella and was so thrilled to be his best man.  As the years went by they shared many good times together.  Michael taught Edward swordsmanship and how to ride a horse.  His nephew, Gustaf, taught him the art of knife throwing, few people in the family were able to befriend Gustaf, a dark and brooding sort. But Edward gained his respect.  King Steven noticed the bond between Edward and Michael and over the years watched it grow.  Thought he himself wished he was closer to the boy, at times Edward and his father did not always see eye to eye.  Edward knew he would never be King of Gotland, nor did he desire it.  Rather he found his solace in nature and her animals. Edward wanted to be a forest ranger and live in the wild, he had found Kira as a chick and raised her himself.  King Steven forbade him from taking this post as he was still a prince and could do much good for their people.  Edward thought not but begrudgingly obeyed his fathers wish.  As time went on bouts of depression plagued him and his drinking became worst.  The only thing that brought happiness to his heart was Alyssa and now there son Anders.  Michael bowed his head.
“My lord god be with my brother this day.  May his heart be brave and his sword strike true.”

Chapter 4....

The dank landscape of the lone forest sprawled out before Edward like a plague.  Twisted gnarled trees devoid of leaf jutted out of the ground.  No soil, only dust and rock met his horse hooves.  Walking his horse forward a low-lying mist hovered above the ground making it impossible for him to see the terrain.  The sharp screech of an owl sent Goliath on his hind legs.  Trembling Edward controlled the frightened horse.
“Easy big boy, it was only a bird…” He rubbed the horse neck and looked around, he gripped the hilt of Drake bane and caught his breath.  Michael has done this before…. I can do it.  He closed his eyes and saw his family: Alyssa so beautiful, Anders an image of himself. Letting out his breath he looked ahead and set his eyes.
“Come Goliath, there something we must do.” The stallion picked his way slowly through the mist, his hooves unsure of the ground.  Edward raised he visor, up in the dark clouds he saw Kira floating on an up draft.  The bird was very loyal to him but did not want her getting hurt. The prince eyed the ethereal terrain around him; he had never seen such a desolate or twisted landscape.  It was like the very earth itself was in pain.  Every childhood fear came back to haunt him as they approached the dark entrance to the witches cave.  Edward tried to shake the feeling off but his fear turned to the time when he was only a child.  In Visborg castle there was a long unused dungeon complete with torture room.  His father never saw a reason to use such a place and hence it was locked up.  One day he was playing hide and seek with some of the children who lived in the castle, one of them Jeremy, the stable masters son had found the key to the dungeon and wanted to play a prank on Edward.  He lured the young prince into the dungeon and locked him in.  For six harrowing hours Edward faced his worst fears in that room.  Michael who personally punished little Jeremy with a good hiding found Edward cowering in the darkness.  Now that same darkness loomed before him. A cold sweat covers his face as he dismounted Goliath.  Reaching over the saddle he drew his sword and turned to the cave.  His stomach lurched as he eyed the darkness, place the sword over his shoulder he stepped into the cave.
