Candy Hearts And Betrayal: A Valentines' Story
Nov 29th, 2007 at 2:55am

I was thinking today about an english assignment from senior year. It was right around valentines day, and our teacher was... slightly nutty. She passed out four random candy hearts to each person. Our assignment was this, " write a romantic story, using every phrase on your hearts at least once." HEE. Mine was not quite what anybody expected. Well, given, I was one of three people in the class who bothered to finish their story... (she wasn't the most respected of teachers... actually at one point when we were supposed to be reading Macbeth, I took over the class for a few days to get everybody to pay attention. Yes, me.) Anyway, though, I put a definative Kiraelian spin on the concept.  It's called "Candy Hearts and Betrayal", and is definately a dark take on the idea of romance. I'll also underline the candy phrases. Some of them were partially rubbed off ( particularly the one that was supposed to say "love sick"), which gave me the idea for this story.

“I love you,” he whispered into her golden hair. She looked up at him, and when she caught his eye, smiled. He took her hand and led her onto the dance floor. Under the banner proclaiming
VALENTINES DAY DANCE 2006
they twirled gracefully amongst the other couples. No one noticed that as they danced, they created patterns. From above, they made a heart, a flower, then a pair of interlocked rings. It seemed as though even the very hall itself knew that love was in the air.

Suddenly, the pattern changed. As a lone girl in a red dress stepped onto the dance floor, the dancers moved to get out of her way, creating the outline of a grinning skull. She sauntered over to the couple and addressed the boy.  “You make me sick.  You tell her you love her, do you?” She tossed her long raven hair and laughed. “If that’s true, then why did you kiss me like that last night? Hmm? Why did you tell me you love me? Make up your mind, dear.”

The blonde’s face was a study in shock as she stared from the other girl, to her boyfriend, and back.  “Baby? Who is this? What is she talking about?” Her boyfriend looked at her, anguish in his eyes. How could he tell her…?

The woman in red laughed and said, “Poor sweet little Ashley… Of course Zack wouldn’t have told you about me. I’m Kira. He was mine - that is until you came along. It’s not the first time he’s left one girl for another, but he always seems to come back to me. How long do you think it will be before he betrays you too? Oh wait… he already did. With me.” She laughed, a silvery sort of chuckle that held traces of the sound of tearing flesh to Ashley’s shocked ears. Kira rubbed a hand up Zack’s arm and whispered, “ You never could resist me, could you?”

Zack glared at her for a second before acknowledging the truth of her words. “ No. I never could.” Ashley stared at him through eyes drowning in her own tears before running out of the room.

Zack made a move to follow her but stopped when Kira spoke. “Be mine. Stay here, with me. Do you really want a meek, wilting lily like her? I’m strong enough for you. She isn't, and never can be. Besides, do you really think she wants to see you right now?”

He sat at a table and sighed. “No, I suppose not. I just hope she’s okay.”  Kira raised her eyebrow and looked at her best friend, who went to find Ashley.  The girl spotted her by a payphone in the cafeteria.

“What’s the matter? Going to call home and tell your mommy how Zack betrayed you? But of course, that’s all you will do. Whine and cry.” She laughed another flesh tearing laugh and shoved Ashley into the wall. “What a wuss. No wonder he loves Kira and not you.” She strode out, giggling, and reported to Zack that “she’s upset, but she’ll be fine.”

Ashley slid down the wall and curled up in a ball on the floor, tears streaming down her face. “Never good enough. Always too meek to do anything…” she moaned. Suddenly, something came over her and she snapped.

“Never again!”
She screamed, a primal sound of rage.  She rushed back into the dance hall and charged towards Kira. Shocked, Zack leapt backwards, out of her way,  tipping a table and knocking a candle over. Instantly, the tablecloth caught fire. No one noticed, however. Everyone was intent on the struggle taking shape in the middle of the dance floor.

Ashley attacked Kira, who retaliated by clawing at the blonde’s face. As they traded blows, someone noticed the fire that had, by this time, spread from the tablecloth to the drapes, to the walls, and was slowly inching up towards the ceiling. Suddenly, everyone was screaming and rushing towards the only door. The room was quickly being turned into a furnace. It seemed impossible that 300 people could escape before the entire room was engulfed.

Kira and Ashley either didn’t notice the fire, or didn’t care. Either way, the result was the same. Both had numerous bruises and gashes by this time, but neither would leave - each was intent on the utter destruction of her rival. It was a struggle Ashley was doomed to lose, being smaller, weaker, and untrained, but she didn’t care. A berserker rage had come over her, and she would fight to the death. Kira was actually filled with something close to admiration towards Ashley - the girl had shown more spine than she’d expected. She wondered for a moment if she’d made a fatal miscalculation. She was, however, confident that she could beat the younger, smaller, nicer girl.

Zack could only watch helplessly as the two women he loved tore each other apart.  He had a horrible realization. Everyone would die because of him.

Suddenly, a portion of the wall came down, crushing three classmates but leaving the way open for many more to escape into the night. As Zack was dragged out by a friend, he saw that Kira and Ashley were locked in a death grip, both on fire. Neither would let go… both had gone berserk.

After the fire department arrived, the police questioned the survivors.  A rumor went around that someone had survived the fire, but he didn’t, couldn’t believe it. They hadn’t seen the flaming figures writhing on the floor, still struggling to gain an advantage even as their flesh roasted.

When he got home, however, he got the shock of his life. Someone had, in fact, survived. Ashley. He had to see her - he went to the hospital and was admitted. The doctors said she was burned over roughly 90% of her body, so not to expect too much. He could see her, but he could not touch her.

Most of her body was covered in bandages, but he could still make out the shallow rise and fall of her chest as she struggled to breathe. As he watched her sleep, he came to the realization that, whatever Kira’s many charms may have been, they could not hold a candle to Ashley’s quiet perfection. When Ashley awoke, she instantly knew there was someone in the room with her. “Who’s there?” she croaked.

“It’s me, Ash. Zack.”  He sighed. “ I just wanted to say I’m sorry. I should never have… I should have told you. I really did mean it when I told you I love you.”

She turned her head a fraction of an inch - the most expression she could give. “So you show me you love me by betraying me with her? Idiot. If I could hit you, I would.”

He sighed. “I never meant for this to happen. I’m sorry.”

She laughed, a sound followed shortly by a cry of pain. “Do you think I did this for you? Because I love you? Hah. You didn’t love me as much as you clearly love her.  Why would I die for you?”

He growled with frustration and exclaimed, “You don’t get it! I don’t know how I can love both of you but I do. I.. I did. I loved you. I loved her. I’m sorry. What do you want me to say? I’m an idiot? I am. Alright? I’m a complete moron. And now she’s dead, and you’re dying… and I don’t know what to do anymore." He sighed, and moderated his tone."Look, clearly, you hate me now. I don’t blame you. You’re dying and it’s my fault. So I’ll just leave. If you ever want to see me again, you know my number. You can have someone dial it for you. If not, well, I hope you die painlessly and go to a better place.” He walked dejectedly out of the room and down to the car park.

She would have cried if she’d still had tear ducts. She did love him. She was quickly slipping away - dying for him, but it was better for him to think she hated him. That way he would not mourn her so much.

Epilogue:

He drove down the road through the woods - she took her last breath.

A deer darted into his path, right in front of a high bridge - a nurse stopped by to check on her as the heart monitor emitted it’s keening death wail.

He swerved to miss the deer - the nurse screamed,  “She’s coding!”

His car smashed into the guardrail and went over - they attempted CPR on her.

He was surrounded by the cool dark water rushing in through the shattered windscreen - the doctor said, “Don’t bother. She’s dead.”

He sucked in a lungful of water as her spirit traveled through the miles to find him.
As his body died, his spirit left with hers to rejoin the others who died that fateful Valentines Night.  They still, even now, haunt the school - all of St. Valentine's ghosts.

The end.
