how do i get my curls to work  haha
Nov 30th, 2007 at 8:33pm

hi. i have naturally curly hair but i have NEVER styled and worn my hair curly out of the house. I always throw it up in a ponytail, straighten it or curl it with a big curling iron.  i want to try to wear my hair curly.  (If I have I should take advantage of it, right?)  so how?!  can someone tell me step by step how to style my hair curly.  mouse, gel, spray?  how much?  when?

monica

ps  preferably without any heat styling tools or blow dryers.

hi there,
This is what i do first never tip your head to wash your hair, just let the shower wet your hair dont touch it! then get about a tablespoon of conditioner and apply it from the ears down, if your going to shampoo just use half a tablespoon and apply to the roots only, then rinse again not touching your hair. Then apply another tablespoon full of conditioner from the ears down, leave for 3 minutes and rinse for half this time.

When drying your hair get a towel and grap the ends with it blotting, not rubbing to encourage curls do this all the way round your hair, then get a tablespoon full of aloe vera gel in your hands and rub these together to distribute the gel to both hands, then grab hair again at the ends, scrunching you will see waves/curls emerge, you may want to pin curl some sections on top for more volume, if you like what you see wet, you will like it dry. Now leave it, do not touch at all else you will get frizz, once its dry you can finger comb to give it volume or use a wide toothed comb to make it wavier, rather than curly. but the trick is not to touch.

Also try reading 'curly Girl' by Lorraine Massey, this is my bible and since using her tips, my hair which before had a slight wave, has just got wavier.

Curly hair can be so beautiful if you treat it well, good luck and let me know how you get on xx

hi. thanks for the advice. i did everything you said to do but nfortunately i did not like the results.  i put the gel in my hair and after it finally dried, which took much longer than usual, my hair was all crunchy, stiff and not as curly as it is naturally.  i hated it so i guess i need to keep trying to find another way to get it curly without frizzy.  maybe mousse?

Most mousse has a lot of alcohol in it which will dry out your curls in the long run.  If the aloe vera gel did not work for you, you might try a leave-in conditioner.  The conditioner will frequently add just enough coating to the hair to minimize frizzies.  There are products out there specifically for anti-frizz, however most that I have seen are heavy silicone products.  If you use a product like this, be sure to clarify and/or use vinegar rinses to prevent excessive build up on your hair.
