Curly hair changing (a semi long read)
May 17th, 2008 at 12:44pm

Hello! I am back to the boards and here to stay. I was in school all year and mostly internetless (except when i had to run to the library anytime for a report/research/email.) Now I bought my own computer. yay!
Anyway, I have some questons for any of you with curly hair or any general hair knowledge (you know who you are).
I have been growing my hair out. I'm a guy (as the little blue mars symbol should tell you) and my hair is almost shoulder length. I want hair around a foot longer than shoulder length (I forget what that's called. I think it's the one just under bra strap length. And I dont need a bra so... haha)
Anyway, winter was a huge time for experimenting with my hair. I had just moved somewhere new, and I didnt have a job or anything, just class. I would put my hair up in the only style I could (front of hair put up in a small pony while rest of hair lays back on the neck and behind ears). I am a month away from being able to make a pony tail with most of my hair (I think.)
**ANYWAY**
I had a nice system going of just conditioning. I had purchased the curly girl handbook (there were no curly men handbooks) and loved it. I immediately got rid of my aveda products that dried my hair and I stopped using humectant so much to counteract that. I bought Burt's Bees Raspberry Brazil Nut conditioner from my Wedge store down the street and used only that. Mixed it with some brown sugar once a week or so to exfoliate that scalp as well.
A couple weeks ago, the weather really changed from cold to.. well how it is now. My hair started to get a little more oily until yo could run your fingers through it (when i was putting it up) and I had to wipe my hand (gross!!).And i don't know what to do with my hair. I hate putting it up. I am not balding or anything but I like to prevent anything however I can.
I am just curious how you curly people (or any of you) change your hair routine throughout the seasons. And if you change products even.
Also I am unsure what products to stick with. I have heard alot of you mention the Morocco Method, but I remember trying their fire shampoo and it had a ton of hard scratchy chunks in it (I of course would shy from shampoo.. unless its needed in one of these seasons or something).

Thank you all so much. I am just desperate and confused. I know hair is a huge "see what works for you, trial and error" type of issue. But advice would be really appreciated right now. I want to stick to natural haircare, and I have seen so many of you with flawless hair on here! I am envious Shocked in a good way Cheesy

THANK YOU -J

Oh and by the way:

So i just got back from the Wedge (health store by me).
I bought Desert Essence 100% pure jojoba oil & Aubrey Organics Pure Aloe Vera (that is sitting in the refrigerator as soon as I got home)
Going to put some jojoba on the ends before I head out for work in an hour and try the aloe on flyaways.

^^I know that reply is journally. Just an update! (still have all those questions)

Modify: My hair also looks better today. I did my brown sugar + burts bees raspberry conditioner on the scalp, and a light condition on the rest of my hair. Let it sit for a couple mins and rinsed off. I have boticelli curls in the front now and it's very large curls all over the rest. I'l get pics up here eventually~ (Maybe after my questions are answered here, I will start a hair journal. And start reading all yours when I get a chance)  Smiley

Hi, Yaku.  Smiley

Ok, so I'm absolutely no help on the curly/natural fronts, but I will say that changing your products and routine throughout the seasons is not at all uncommon. I myself presently use different S&C for the hotter & colder months where I live.

As far as extensions go, they are a terrible idea. I suggest that you read this thread. The damage to your hair would be irrevocable.

Everyone here knows what it's like to want long hair now, but we've all also come to understand that it's a game of patience. Think of it as a rather frustrating journey rather than a destination.  Grin

Oh, and do remember to get regular trims from someone you trust. Letting anything grow wild with zero maintenance is a bad plan. And fresh ends can be quite encouraging. Good luck!

I have to change my routines as the seasons change as well.  In the winter I need a lot of moisturizing conditioners because of the dry air.  In the summer I need to shampoo more often (twice a week instead of weekly) because I am sweating more due to my bicycle commutes.  I rinse my head every day I bike and might condition just the ends, but shampoo about every 3rd day or so, depending on hair condition and time.  A vinegar rinse might also help keep the scalp oil minimized as well.

It sounds like you've found some good products that will help you reach your hair goal (I usually refer to it as mid-back or lower shoulder blades for the guys).

For different styles, you might start working on your braiding skills.  A french braid looks really cool on guys and is great on hair that can't quite be held in a pony tail.  Braiding and especially french braiding does take a lot of practice, so start now and perfect your skills early!

In response to bikerbraid:
I am always scared to practice braiding because of knots. Not that I am bad at braiding. Just scared that all that wrapping hair around each other and tying will damage my hair in the long run.
I have another question:
There was this amazing little website where this girl (I think she was around my age, but not sure) duplicated movie hairstyles (especially medieval and Star Wars flicks) with her extremely long locks. Anyone remember this site? I'd appreciate it greatly. She had some cool looking "Viking" hairstyle on there, with leather thongs. Also the Hopi style, she showed how to do that.

Thanks again~

I do remember the person you are referring to - she was/is a member here "Leia".  She is from Bangladesh.  I believe she had several places where her pictures were shown.  Here is one site that is still up where she shows how to do some of her hair styles..  I'll have to hunt more to find her Star Wars pictures.

As for the braiding - as long as you are sure to separate the sections as you braid, and are careful removing the braids, it should not damage your hair or cause knots.  I use braids as a way to protect my hair from getting knotted - especially when I am biking or out in windy conditions.
